The Scottish Society of Architect Artists, founded in 1987, aims to re- inforce close relationships between art and architecture, by providing opportunities to display and sell artworks by members. The ambition is to encourage architects to continue developing their skills in visual arts beyond architecture – drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, print-making and experimental art.

Many architects were trained in schools of architecture associated with art colleges throughout , and the Society aims to offer members opportunities to continue an art based social and educa- tional environment by organising ‘Paint and Pint days’, exhibitions and awards, occasional tutored study courses and/or life classes generally organised in association with the School of Art.

The SSAA also maintains strong links with other European societies of architect artists. Through an association with Ligne et Couleur, SSAA Members are invited to submit works to annual exhibitions in France, Italy, Poland and Germany and in turn European architect artists regu- larly participate and exhibit in the Scottish events.

Membership of the Society is open to all registered architects, retired architects and past and present students of architecture resident in Scotland, together with expatriates of the foregoing description. The Committee of the Society may also elect Honorary members. Members pay an annual subscription, due on 1 January each year, The annual subscription is currently £20.00, with a reduced rate of £10.00 for students.

Guest Artist : David Martin David Martin was brought up in and now lives and works in Edinburgh. After school he studied Astronomy and Physics at Glasgow University before moving to and graduating MA Hons in Fine Art.

“I am drawn to environments that I find difficult and incomprehensible. There’s something about exploring places where I can’t read the script or language and trying to sketch in cities where I constantly feel lost and disori- Guest Artist: DAVID MARTIN, Jute Worker. entated.” observes David.. Guest Artist: DAVID MARTIN, the Loom Set Up. As winner of the ‘Alastair Salvesen Travel Scholarship’ in association with the Royal Scottish Academy, and ‘the NC MacFarlane Charitable Trust Award’ with the Royal Glas- gow Institute, he has held a number of solo exhibitions including “The Cusp of Change: A Journey Through the Middle East” at the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh.

David Martin considers that the experience of teaching gifted and committed students - which he has done at both College and at Leith School of Art, - forces him to think harder about his own work. He also gets stimulation from what he refers to as ‘Art Blethers’ with two other distinguished artists, his sister Jenny Martin, and his mother Jean B Martin RSW.

The Scottish Society of Architect Artists is pleased to donate 10% of all sales to Mary’s Meals Charity Mary's Meals is an international movement that sets up school feeding projects in communities where poverty and hunger prevent children from gaining an educa- tion. Mary's Meals is a simple idea that works - by providing a daily meal in a place of education, chronically poor children are attracted to the classroom where they can gain a basic education that provides an escape route from poverty. Over 600,000 children receive Mary’s Meals every school day. The average cost to feed a child for a whole school year is £10.70
