Pacific Coast Terminals is the link between ship and shore for Wes- tern Canadian resource companies and their global markets. Trains deliver sulphur and ethylene glycol from Alberta’s oil and gas refineries for shipment to ports around the world. The 43-hectare (108-acre) terminal has the flexi- bility to load these raw products directly onto ships or to temporarily store them on site.

Westshore operates the coal-exporting facilities at Ro- berts Bank, Delta, , with an annual capacity of 33-million tonnes. In the most comprehensive environmental management upgrade in its history, Westshore has made significant impro- vements in four key areas of its operation. The enhancements, will cost a total of $14 million and provide better dust suppression, better use of water, in-community air monitoring, and other advances.

North Arm Transportation is involved in a wide range of marine industry activities but is primarily focused on the movement of fuel and freight to small communities and isolated locations along the coast of British Columbia. ShoreBoxTM offers convenient shorepower

Schneider Electric is aiming to revolutionize the ship-to-shore energy management systems market with its new ShoreBoX™ system, thanks to its portable modularity. In harbour cities, ship emissions can be a major source of urban pollution. Shorepower enables a ship to plug into the electrical grid at berth and switch off its own engines to reduce emissions and noise within the port community. Some issues remain be- fore shorepower can be adopted on a global scale. Some older ships, for example, don’t have the facility to plug into a shoreside connection. Significant progress is being made in converting ol- der ships to have this capability while at berth. Canada is a leading global proponent of shorepower as a result of Transport Canada’s successful Shore Power Technology for Ports program. ShoreBoX™ is an all-in-one integrated solution, adaptable to any port context. It is easy to install and use, according to Bill Jackson, Schneider Electric’s Marine Sector Manager in Canada. The ShoreBoX™ is the result of a heavy investment in R&D over the last few years. In 2012 Schneider Electric invested nearly five per cent of its $36 billion dollars in total sales into research. At one of its main R&D facilities in Grenoble, France, the 3 MVA ShoreBoX™ prototype – approximately the size of a shipping container to facilitate road transport –has thoroughly been tested with a medium voltage supply of 6.6 kilovolts, which simulates a real-life port context. ShoreBoX™ has also been trialed in a real-port environment in Morocco where two boxes have been installed for naval frigates. Shorepower is already recognized as an important way forward to save costs and reduce emissions for ports. It is available at more than 100 berths worldwide, with Schneider Electric providing almost half of those systems.

Ecoshield wins Seatrade 2014 Innovation in Ship Operations Award

The Seatrade 2014 Innovation in Ship Operations Award was won by Sub- sea Industries, a Hydrex company, for its breakthrough product Ecoshield®, an ultimate protection for ship hulls, rudders, and ship underwater running gear from cavitation and corrosion/erosion damage. A very distinguished and knowledgeable panel of judges, chaired by the International Maritime Organization’s Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu, de- cided the winner of the Innovation in Ship Operations category. The award was presented at the Seatrade 2014 Awards Dinner held at the Guildhall in London, England, on April 14th.

www.green-marine.org INDUSTRY SUCCESS STORIES Duluth receives green infrastructure grant The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded a $250,000 Great Lakes Restoration Initiative grant to the City of Duluth to fund green infrastructure projects to improve water quality in the Lake Superior Basin. Duluth is the first of 16 cities to receive funding in the initial round of EPA’s new Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Shoreline Cities grant program. The grant will be used for green stormwater management projects at three locations: Lake Superior Zoo, Atlas Industrial Brownfield Park, and Chambers Grove Park. The Duluth Seaway Port Authority, State of Minnesota, City of Duluth, Duluth Economic Development Authority and the U.S. Army Reserve will provide contributions totaling $250,000 to match the EPA grant. The EPA will award Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Shoreline Cities Green Infrastructure Grants to 15 additional cities on the U.S. side of the Great Lakes. These grants will be used to fund up to 50 per cent of the cost of rain gardens, bioswales, green roofs, porous pave- ment, greenways, constructed wetlands, stormwater tree trenches and other green infrastructure projects on public property.

Seattle ups reward for using low-sulfur bunkers In an effort to encourage vessels to reach early compliance with 2015 Emis- sion Control Area (ECA) regulations, the Port of Seattle has increase the cash available to vessels using bunker fuel with a maxi- mum sulphur content of 0.10 per cent while at berth. The move comes under the 2009-launched At Berth Clean (ABC) Fuels Program, which encourages vessels to burn low-sulphur fuels at the port. According to the port, this year’s payout will be offered on a “per metric tonne” basis to vessels that achieve early compliance with the upcoming North American ECA regu- lations. The rule currently requires vessels sailing within 200 nautical miles of the North American coast to use fuel with a sulphur content of no more than 1.00 per cent. This limit falls to 0.10 per cent in 2015. “The incentive payout depends on the amount of fuel burned and could be as much as $7,400 per qualifying vessel call,” according to port information. Port Commissioner Stephanie Bowman says the program has eliminated more than 835 metric tonnes of sulphur dioxide emissions from the wider Puget Sound region over the past seven years. The port has paid out approximately $3 million in incentives so far. This will be the final year for the ABC Fuels Program. The program applies to qualifying vessels in port through December 31st, 2014.

Port of Quebec swings into sustainable actions

The Quebec Port Authority has unveiled its first-ever sustainable develop- ment action plan. The action plan, covering the years 2014 and 2015, re- presents the first major step taken by the port authority in 2013 towards officially making the port in Quebec City a sustainable development -en terprise. Its action plan is based on consultations with key stakeholders during the course of the past several months. The consultations were led by members of the Port of Quebec community relations committee, as well as a vigilance committee that oversees the port’s activities. Three major objectives were subsequently established with the goal of ensuring a better quality of life for both the existing community and future generations. The three objectives led to identifying 16 priority ac- tions that would permit the organization to lay the foundations of a progressive and participatory sustainable development process. The three main objectives are: • To be recognized by the community as an exemplary manager of the port territory • Pursue continuous environmental performance improvement throughout the Port of Québec • Develop and maintain a City-Port relationship that’s respectful of the community

All 16 priorities contained within the action plan (released in French only) can be found on the Port of Quebec website. >

New launched by Fednav

Fednav has announced the Canadian arrival of its latest, highly specialized ice- breaker, the MV . Built at Japan Marine United’s Tsu Shipyard, it has the first ballast treatment system installed on a Canadian-owned vessel.

The Nunavik will be used to export the concentrates produced at the Canadian Royalties’ Nunavik Nickel mine at Deception Bay in northern Quebec. The vessel will also supply the mine with equipment and fuel year round. Rated 4, the Nunavik is the most powerful bulk-carrying icebreaker in the world. The Nunavik will sail unescorted in Arctic regions and will operate in the extreme winter conditions of the Canadian Arctic. It is capable of maintaining continuous progress of three knots in 1.5 metres of ice. The Nunavik is equipped with the latest environmental technologies, such as a Tier II engine that reduces nitrogen oxide emissions by 20 per cent.
