CONDUCTOR EDO DE WAART LEADS THE CSO IN PROGRAM OF WORKS BY MOZART AND BEETHOVEN

CSO’s Daniel Gingrich is Soloist in Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 3

June 2, 3, 4 and 7

CHICAGO—Edo de Waart leads the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in subscription concerts featuring works by Mozart and Beethoven Thursday, June 2, 2016, 8:00 p.m., Friday, June 3, 2016, 8:00 p.m., Saturday, June 4, 2016, 8:00 p.m., and Tuesday, June 7, 2016, 7:30 p.m. The program includes Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2, Mozart’s Symphony No. 38 (Prague) and Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 3, with CSO Acting Principal Horn Daniel Gingrich as soloist.

Mozart’s Symphony No. 38 (Prague) was written as a thank you and tribute to his newfound fans in Prague, who had enthusiastically embraced his opera The Marriage of Figaro at the time of its premiere. The brooding introduction of the symphony hints at themes from his next opera, Don Giovanni, before breaking into a joyful allegro. The program continues with Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 3, which includes a memorable and lyrical second movement marked “Romanza.” Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 is the concluding work on the program. Written in 1802 as the composer came to grips with the difficult realities of his increasing deafness, the work is surprisingly cheerful in mood, with passages of unbridled enthusiasm, especially in the final movement.

Dutch conductor Edo de Waart currently serves as Music Director of both the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. He is also the Chief Conductor of the Royal Flemish Philharmonic and the Conductor Laureate of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. His previous posts include those with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, , and Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to his regular appearances with the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles and Royal Stockholm Philharmonic orchestras, Edo de Waart is also a frequent guest conductor with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

The Thursday, June 2 concert is part of the CSO’s Classic Encounter series that includes a lively preconcert scene complete with food and drinks, as well as a multimedia presentation and conversation with a CSO musician hosted by WXRT and Radio Hall of Fame DJ Terri Hemmert.
