01. Home Town Chicago 02. Devil Muzic 03. Make Some Noise 04 Artist: Boo Williams Title: Home Town Chicago Label: Anotherday Records, UK. Format: CD/LP Release: 21.11.11 Chicago, amongst many other things, was the birthplace of house music. Beginning in the early 80's as rough edits of disco tunes and primitive drum tracks, spun in dank city clubs by the likes of Ron Hardy, Frankie Knuckles, Lil' Louis, Farley Jackmaster Funk, and Jesse Saunders, the incessant throb of house music soon started to spread around the world. With initial hits from Farley in the mid 80's, the world fell in love with house; rehashing it, recycling it and eventually watering it down into increasingly commercial forms. Attention on house music's birthplace quickly disappeared, leaving the city full of kids brought up on the early rawer sound of house. A second wave of DJ's began to emerge pushing a darker, more rhythmical strain of house that was currently being heard in Europe. DJ Sneak, Derrick Carter, Gemini, Cajmere, Glenn Underground, Roy Davis Jr, Paul Johnson, and countless others began releasing their unhinged take on the house sound. They began to spread their message in basements all across the world but were still largely ignored by the now gargantuan house music audiences worldwide. Debuting on Curtis Jones' Relief Records - the tougher sub label of his Cajual label - Boo Williams dropped his A New Beginning EP in 1994 and quickly established his own signature sound. Even more ferocious releases for Relief followed, as did a 12-inch for renowned Dutch techno imprint Djax. In 1996, Relief offered Boo an album release, for which he delivered Home Town Chicago, Boo's electronic love letter to house music. While still driving and heading straight for the dancefloor, Home Town Chicago showed a softer side to his sound, and the perfect place to start Anotherday - a new label dedicated to plucking forgotten classics from the sometimes murky depths of musical history. Saunders was one of the first DJ’s to commercially release a house music single, and was largely responsible for the develop of the genre in Chicago. Over ten years ago, the City of Chicago recognized the contributions that Jesse and house music had made to the culture of the city by proclaiming July 17, 1997, as “Jesse Saunders and Pioneers of House Music Day” in Chicago. Saunders’ “behind the music” tour through the early days of Chicago’s house music scene is especially important due to the current void of information on the genre (despite Mayor Richard M. Daley’s proclamation, nothing much seems to have happened since 1997 in terms of documenting or celebrating house music). For lovers of Chicago house music, Jesse’s memoir is an intriguing look at how this assorted and colorful cast of characters– including Ron Hardy and Frankie Knuckles, among others–fell into creating a new genre of music. Following is additional information from the official press release: “Jesse Saunders’ story is one of the most important in the history of popular culture.

House musicians added synthesizer bass lines, electronic drums, electronic effects, samples from funk and pop, and vocals using reverb and delay. They balanced live instruments and singing with electronics. Like Disco, House music was “inclusive” (both socially and musically), infuenced by synthpop, rock, reggae, new wave, punk and industrial. Music made for dancing. It was not initially aimed at commercial success. The Warehouse Discotheque that opened in 1977 The Warehouse was the place to be in Chicago’s late-’70s nightlife scene. An old three-story warehouse in Chicago’s west-loop industrial area meant for only 500 patrons, the Warehouse often had over 2000 people crammed into its dark dance foor trying to hear DJ Frankie Knuckles’ magic. In 1982, management at the Warehouse doubled the admission, driving away the original crowd, as well as Knuckles. I was fortunate enough to catch up with the man with the golden horn for an exclusive interview… T&T:How long have you been playing trumpet and how did you get your start? Rico:I’ve been playing for 20 years. Damn, does that make me sound old? T&T: Umm HELL YES. haha Rico: I started very young!! Haha. My older brother played the trumpet in Puerto Rico for salsa bands and then for the Police of Puerto Rico. He was the first person to put a trumpet in my hands and then I went on to play in middle and high school. My big break for what I’m doing now came in 2007 when I was offered a residency at Tao Beach in Las Vegas for Sunday Sunset Sessions. That first season at Tao Beach was amazing!! T&T: Yes! I definitely remember those days. How many trumpets do you own anyway? Do you have one trusty horn or a few to choose from? Rico:I’ve been playing the same Bach Stradivarius for over 10 years. It’s like my girl. I get sick of looking at her sometimes but when she touches my lips, we fall in love all over again and make magic together. T&T:What motivates you as a musician? Rico:The opportunity to enrich someone’s life.

Early house music was generally characterized by repetitive 4/4 beats, rhythms provided by drum machines, [not in citation given] off-beat hi-hat cymbals, and synthesized basslines. While house displayed several characteristics similar to disco music, which preceded and influenced it, as both were DJ and record producer-created dance music, house was more electronic and minimalistic. The mechanical, repetitive rhythm of house was one of its main components. Many house compositions were instrumental, with no vocals; some had singing throughout the song with lyrics; and some had singing but no actual words. House music developed in Chicago's underground dance club culture in the early 1980s, as DJs from the subculture began altering the pop-like disco dance tracks to give them a more mechanical beat and deeper basslines. Introduction There are many beginnings to the history of Electronic Dance Music (EDM). It would be a mistake to exclude the impact that disco had upon house, techno, acid house, and dance music in general. While disco evolved mostly in the dance capital of America (New York), it proposed the idea that danceable songs could be mixed smoothly together, allowing for long term dancing to previously recorded music. Prior to the disco era, nightlife dancing was restricted to bands or jukeboxes, which limited variety and options of songs and genres. The selections of the DJs mattered more than their technical excellence at mixing.
