Even if sailing on a Tall Ship is a once in a lifetime adventure for you, the skills and lessons you will take away from working as a part of a crew to prioritize the ship’s needs, as well as fellow crew’s needs above your own will be an experience that will stick with you for the rest of your life. After signing aboard, you will become part of our crew, and may find yourself on deck bracing the yards on a starboard tack, or taking your turn at the helm, perhaps steering the ship towards the northern lights.

Each individual participates to the best of their ability within the rotating watch system and the efforts of every member of the ship's company are vital to the voyage. No one is a passenger: everyone works together to help make the voyage a success. No prior experience is necessary; no extraordinary fitness is required. A voyage aboard the Tall Ship Oliver Hazard Perry is an exhilarating but also comfortable adventure: our professional chef prepares three fine meals and snacks each day, berths and cabins are spacious, the ship is heated throughout and there is ample hot water for showers (although of course we must conserve our resources).

We can’t think of a more innovative voyage than this new Tall Ship’s 2017 journey into the Arctic Circle. This journey is not only a historic event from which the world will gain powerful knowledge, but also an incredibly empowering experience for the professional crew and trainees,

The Sailing School Vessel Oliver Hazard Perry will be a U.S. Documented vessel, inspected and certified by the U.S. Coast Guard. Safety standards for Sailing School Vessels differ from those of passenger vessels on a comparable route, because persons aboard training ships are not passengers but participants who fully share in the ship’s operation. SSV Oliver Hazard Perry will meet or exceed all safety requirements for a vessel of her size and class. Photo credit Onne van der Wal
