Born and raised in the suburbs outside of Detroit, Michigan Johnny led a very active upbringing, dabbling in everything from ice hockey to playing drums in rock bands before pursuing an acting career. Following his high school years, he was drawn in to Motor City’s rave scene and through Detroit’s legendary underground dance culture, Johnny’s love for electronic music began to blossom. At the time however, acting was Johnny’s primary focus and in his early twenties, he set out to Los Angeles to pursue the grand dream of making it on the big screen. Johnny landed numerous roles in TV shows and independent films and managed to keep himself afloat but, continued to indulge in LA’s ever-growing electronic music industry. Having been inspired by Armin van Buuren, Paul van Dyk, Sasha & Digweed and many more, Johnny could no longer ignore his true calling. He assembled a small studio and began producing dance music. After experimenting with a variety of sounds, he finally planted himself in the realm of Trance and has remained ever since. Turning heads with his breakout single, 'Fairfax' -- Johnny established himself as a name to watch out for after signing with UK's powerhouse Trance label, Enhanced Recordings. The track received massive support from many artists including Armin van Buuren on 'A State Of Trance' and Markus Schulz on 'Global DJ Broadcast' where it was named the "Global Selection". Following the aftermath of 'Fairfax', Johnny continued a streak of releasing quality dance tracks ever since. From the energetic, Tech-Trance monster, 'The Machine' (with Juventa) to his numerous classics on Lange Recordings such as 'Orion' and 'Exodus' and flexing his versatility with his debut 138 BPM single, 'Pulverize', Johnny has established himself as one of the genre’s brightest up and coming talents. Over the recent years, he’s made his mark on renown industry imprints such as Armada Music, Euphonic Records, Garuda Music, Damaged Records and Perfecto Records, where he not only remixed Paul Oakenfold's covers of the classics, 'Barber’s Adagio For Strings' and 'Hold That Sucker Down' but, also released his first EP, 'Poison Whispers' which received numerous plays from Armin van Buuren on 'A State Of Trance' as well as support from Ferry Corsten, Mark Sherry, Lange, Andy Moor, Simon Patterson and many others. In this paper we apply a mixed approach, generation by transformation, which conserves structural fea- tures of an existing piece while generating variable parts with a statistical model (Bigo and Conklin, 2015; Goienetxea and Conklin, 2015). In recent years several music informatics studies have started to explore electronic dance music (EDM) using audio analysis (Diakopoulos et al., 2009; Collins, 2012; Rocha et al., 2013; Yadati et al., 2014; Panteli et al., 2014). The symbolic generation of EDM is a new problem that has been explored in the work of Eigenfeldt and Pasquier (2013), who use a corpus of 100 EDM songs for the extraction of low order statistics. In our approach to EDM generation, a single template piece in Logic Pro X (LPX) format is transformed using a statistical model. As in most digital audio workstation formats, an LPX project contains e↵ects, instrumentation, and orchestration, which can all be inherited by a transformed piece. 2 Methods In this work we focus on generation of the EDM subgenre of trance.The approach to trance generation follows three steps: chord sequence extraction and transformation; chord voicing; and LPX streaming.

    THE PSYTRANCE PARTY C. DE LEDESMA M.Phil. 2011 THE PSYTRANCE PARTY CHARLES DE LEDESMA A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of East London for the degree of Master of Philosophy August 2011 Abstract In my study, I explore a specific kind of Electronic Dance Music (EDM) event - the psytrance party to highlight the importance of social connectivity and the generation of a modern form of communitas (Turner, 1969, 1982). Since the early 90s psytrance, and a related earlier style, Goa trance, have been understood as hedonist music cultures where participants seek to get into a trance-like state through all night dancing and psychedelic drugs consumption. Authors (Cole and Hannan, 1997; D’Andrea, 2007; Partridge, 2004; St John 2010a and 2010b; Saldanha, 2007) conflate this electronic dance music with spirituality and indigene rituals. In addition, they locate psytrance in a neo-psychedelic countercultural continuum with roots stretching back to the 1960s. Others locate the trance party events, driven by fast, hypnotic, beat-driven, largely instrumental music, as post sub cultural and neo-tribal, representing symbolic resistance to capitalism and neo liberalism. My study is in partial agreement with these readings when applied to genre history, but questions their validity for contemporary practice. The data I collected at and around the 2008 Offworld festival demonstrates that participants found the psytrance experience enjoyable and enriching, despite an apparent lack of overt euphoria, spectacular transgression, or sustained hedonism. I suggest that my work adds to an existing body of literature on psytrance in its exploration of a dance music event as a liminal space, redolent with communitas, but one too which foregrounds mundane features, such as socialising and pleasure.

Then he discovered Fruity Loops 1.0 which charmed him with its simple and multifunctional interface.
