Live music in the film:

Albert (John Alansu) distinguishes himself by performing Jim Webb’s Wichita Linesman with appropriate solemnity.

Ken (George Shevtsov) begins the show humming along to Barry White, and later in the Chinese restaurant, when Albert tells him that the public doesn’t want to sit around listening to songs about the act of procreation, Ken dissects the lyrics for Charlie Rich’s Behind Closed Doors:

Ken: “Tell me, what do you suppose Behind Closed Doors is about?” Albert: “I’m not sure, I can’t recall offhand.” Ken: “Well let me help you. ‘When we get behind closed doors, and she lets her hair hang down, she makes me glad that I’m a man.’ What do you suppose that’s all about Albert? It seems to me that song is about the act of, as you put it (he clicks his tongue and waves his fingers) ‘procreation’”. Albert (standing up): “Maybe so, but at least Charlie Rich seems to base his acts of procreation on a foundation of love and mutual respect …” (He heads into the kitchen)

(Below: Albert ‘rendering’ Glen Campbell)

Lyrics:

There was no conventional underscore used in the film, and so there is no composer credit.

Instead a few tracks by Barry White act as atmosphere, commentary and underscore, including the track Love Serenade which gives the film its title.

Head credits:

Barry White graces the head credits with his presence.

Percussion begins over fish swimming past a baited hook, with a whispered “baby, baby, baby, baby” and the odd deep sigh.

Then as Ken is seen driving his Mazda RX-7 towards Sunray (aka Robinvale), the song breaks out in full, with Ken mouthing along to the words.

Lyrics heard in the film:

(deep sigh) Oh baby … (this is how it’s generally transcribed, though it sounds more like ‘oh zaysee’) Oh baby ... Keep on My baby Keep on doing it Right on oh oh oh Right on doing it Be better to get there (Baby, keep on) Oh you’ll get it together baby Right on Keep on doing it Oh, you get it baby, you get it ... (My my baby, keep on) I swear you got it together, baby (Keep on, keep on)

Whatever, whatever Girl, I'll do Forever and ever, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah I'll see you through

I've got to keep you pleased in every way I can Gonna give you all of me, as much as you can stand Make love to you right now, that's all I want to do I know you need it, girl and you know I need it too

'Cause, I found what the world is searching for Here, right here, my dear, I don't have to look no more And oh, my babe, I hoped and I prayed For someone just like you to make me feel the way you do …

(The song distorts like a doppler effect, and fades down here, as the writer/director credit leaves and the camera cranes up to pick out the wheat silos at the end of the railway line. A cawing crow and industrial noises take over)

Tail credits:

Alvin Stardust’s song My Coo Ca Choo begins before the credits, just after the sisters have tipped Ken’s body into the river, and Vicki-Ann says “oh well, that’s that then,” and prepares to row away.

Ken’s body bobs up and the sisters scream as the opening chords pound away. As the sisters frantically try to start the motor, the lyrics begin, and continue over Ken, now fully fish, heading down river beneath the water, bobbing above him Dimity’s “I Wuv You” balloon.

Lyrics as heard in the film:

Coo! Coo! I just want you I really love the things that you do Come on, and love-a-me too Oh won't you be my coo ca choo Sweet-ness, I like your dress I love the way you know you're the best I'm in love! an' I'm in a mess I really want you coo ca choo Love you Yes I love ya Yes I love my coo ca I want you Yes I want ya Yes I, I really do want you Tom Cat! you know where it's at! Come on ! Let's go to my flat Lay down 'n groove on the mat Where you can be my coo ca choo Chains! Chains! I'm all in chains Your love will drive me insane Come on! Let's do it again I really want my coo ca choo Love you Yes I love ya Yes I love my coo ca I want you Yes I want ya Yes I, I really do want you (guitar-led solo) Love you Yes I love ya Yes I love my coo ca I want you Yes I want ya Yes I, I really do want you

Night time's a lonely time When you're gone I'm starting to cry But you know that you're on my mind Oh honey be my coo ca choo Do! Do! Do ! Do! You love me too? Uh huh Will I smile or will I be blue? Am I mad? I'm hung up on you Oh honey be my coo ca choo So honey be my coo ca choo ... Love you Yes I love ya Yes I love my coo ca I want you Yes I want ya Yes I, I want my coo ca Love you Yes I love ya Yes I love my coo ca

(etc, more repeats as the song fades out).

With about 72 seconds to go, a brief excerpt of Les Crane reading Desiderata turns up and runs until the end of the credits The words are accompanied by classic 1970s melody-making, with a chorus joining in ... Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender, Be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly, and listen to others - Even the dull and ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons - they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter, For always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. (Chorus bursts in “you are a child”) Crane: “You are a child of the universe …” (Chorus: “… of the universe”) Crane: “No less than the trees and the stars” (chorus repeats) You have a right to be here (chorus repeats) (Chorus: “and whether or not”) Crane: “And whether or not it is clear to you” (Chorus: “It is clear to you”) Crane: “No doubt the universe is unfolding” (chorus repeats) Crane: “as it should…”

The chorus repeats “as it should”, as the sound fades down.
