Therapy is usually the last resort in a sequence of desperate attempts by the nursery school and parents to discourage the aggressive behaviour of the child. Punishment, threatening the child and time out seems to be popular but often ineffective methods used at home and at nursery schools to control the behaviour of the young child.

We tend to forget that young children, like any other The first step of intervention is to closely observe the human beings, experience a wide range of intense aggressive behaviour of the child: emotions but are not equipped to recognise (often not • Who triggers the aggressive behaviour? (Younger/ even having the vocabulary to name an emotion) and deal older children? A specific child or care giver?) with their feelings in an appropriate way. Anger in a child is NOT abnormal! The challenge is to teach the child to • What triggers the behaviour? (Is the child tired or deal with these feelings in a constructive way. Disciplining hungry? The above will certainly provide guidelines to addressing the child’s problem. • Typical Behaviour Modification Strategies include neutralising the aggressive behaviour (remove the child when you see trouble coming and redirect his attention), rewarding positive behaviour and teaching the child coping skills to identify and cope with anger in a constructive way. • A record is kept of the behaviour of the child at different intervals during the day. Strategies are modified according to the specific needs of the child. We often focus solely on the “aggressor’s” behaviour and tend to forget the role that the “victim” plays in maintaining the behaviour of the aggressor: Example: Johnny is a 3 year old boy. His vocabulary is very limited. He has just enrolled as a pupil of a big nursery school (over 200 children). There are 20 three year olds in his class. It is very noisy and busy. His friend, Lee, is 6 month older than Johnny (a huge difference in capabilities at this age). Lee forcibly takes a toy from Johnny. Johnny hits Lee as a way to assert himself. Lee starts crying and the teacher responds by scolding Johnny. Lee (who is a bit of a tale teller) has now learned how to seek attention of an adult: he must just start crying and accuse Johnny of hurting him. After a vicious circle has been established the desperate teacher tries to deal with the situation by never letting Johnny out of her sight and letting him sit next to her, even on the play ground. Johnny is now labelled as a naughty, aggressive boy by his teacher, the assistant and all the children in his class. He has evolved from a happy, spontaneous little boy with limited communication and assertive skills, into an angry, unhappy little boy who acts out according to the label that has been bestowed upon him. Possible indicators of more serious underlying problems: • The behaviour of the child is reckless and he constantly invades the personal space of other children. • He displays the need for continuous high-intensity stimuli (hitting, shouting, kicking) • Aggression without instigation. • Preoccupied with aggressive themes when playing. • Aggressive behaviour after experiencing a trauma.
