120th Anniversary of Oyasama 120th Anniversary of Oyasama Message from the Head of the Overseas Department (2/26, 169) A strong impression of the 120th anniversary of Oyasama bustling with 170,000 returning followers still lingered as the February monthly commenced. From morning service, the rain began full-scale, and at one point, it gradually trans- formed to weather accompanied by winds. Despite the weather, the wave of people heading toward the main sanctuary continued endlessly and the grounds surrounding the sanctuary was filled with the sight of colorful umbrellas, which painted an impression of a garden filled with flowers. Also, from this month, head ministers of churches will take turns as they are allowed to sit behind the barriers within the restricted area surrounding the Kanrodai throughout the entire anniversary year. This month, 1,659 head ministers wearing service kimono sat their turn as the service was spiritedly performed. In his prayer, the mentioned that the 120th Anniversary of Oyasama was held without mishap, and that we will utilize the joy of our spiritual growth as the basis of finding our next goal. He vowed that we would not be swayed by the current state of the world, and always keeping the Divine Model in our hearts, he asked that we could be al- lowed blessings as we lean on the Parent, and strongly advance forward as we devote our sincere effort toward single-hearted salvation and strive toward the intended world. After the service, Honbu-in, Rev. Masahiko Iburi, gave the sermon. He first reflected on the joy of having completed the 120th Anniversary of Oyasama, and expressed his sincere desire to follow this path taught to us through Oyasama. He further mentioned that the reason Oyasama hid Herself from physical life was, as stated, ‘Because of My love for you, My children, the Parent shortened Her life by twenty- five years to step out and save the world from now.’ He said that emphasis lies in the fact that salvation will begin from now, and understanding this point will connect toward our earnest- ness in following this Path. Continuing on, he touched on the anecdotes, which is filled with the warm parental heart of Oyasama. He stated that the Divine Model of Oyasama is the source of strength for those who follow the path, and advised that the value of our lives as Yoboku lies in the extent that each of us can seriously place the Divine Model within our own hearts. He further urged, for all Yoboku to cheerfully imbed in their hearts, three points, namely the ‘spirit of single- heartedness with God, a firm attitude toward hinokishin, and the mind of unity’ as we follow this path. Finally he ended his sermon, urging that we utilize this anniversary as an opportu- nity to further reflect on how we our ourselves as followers. That we should return to , and truly feel the heart of Oyasama, as we realize that our firm understanding in the intention of the 26th day of the new year in 1887, will serve as the basis of our resolve toward the next milestone toward world salvation. As I heard Honbu-in, Rev. Iburi’s noble resolve of faith within his moving sermon, I am convinced that all those listening could not help but desire to follow the path of the Di- vine Model. In spite of whatever hardships, let us again spiritedly dedicate ourselves. Today, I could feel this sort urging within the warm rainy weather of spring. I am happy to relay that it was a service befitting the beginning of a new path fol- lowing the anniversary. Yoshiaki Mihama Overseas Department Head

February Monthly Service Prayer Before You, God the Parent, Tenri-O-no-Mikoto, who resides in this shrine, I, (Michihito Hamada, bishop of the Mission Headquarters of Hawaii) pray with reverence. As we live in this world taught to us as the bosom of God the Parent, we constantly receive Your overflowing grace and blessings, which grants us the free use of our bodies as we advance toward the realization of the joyous life world. These boundless blessings are truly more than we can expect. We deeply express our gratitude for Your grace, as we proceed in high spirits toward the path of sincerity, which we are shown through the Divine Model of Oyasama. Today is the day we are granted to conduct the February monthly service at this mission headquarters. The service performers will unite their hearts to perform the seated service and Teodori joyously in high spirits. We brothers and sisters of this Path have looked forward to this day and today, we are gathered here in prayer before You to sing the Mikagura-uta. As You watch us, we hope that You can be spirited as well. It has been 120 years since Oyasama, who became the Shrine of God the Parent to hasten world salvation, hid Her physical presence, and on the past January 26th, the Anniversary Service was solemnly performed and Jiba was filled with many children of the Path returning from all over the world in yearning desire for the Parent. From Hawaii, 70 people returned to express their gratitude for blessings received and vowed to apply their effort toward the advancement of world salvation for a renewed level of spiritual maturity. I hope that we can all consider this seasonable time of the anniversary as a new beginning, and tell those who are troubled by illnesses and troubles, about the true Parent who will grant us salvation for generations to come. May You, God the Parent, accept our sincerity, and we ask that You guide us toward reconstructing the world where we can spend our days living in harmony by helping one another. Together with everyone present, I pray for these blessings.

I cannot say that this month’s recipe is any healthier than last, but taking into consideration that it is a form of soup, I’m sure this month’s recipe can be considered a healthier choice for sure. I remember my father making this and although he always made a large pot of it, it never lasted more than 2 nights at my house. I hope you will enjoy my father’s version of this well known recipe filled with lots of vegetables and chunks of beef.

Beef Stew Ingredients Stew Meat Desired Quantity Carrots 6 chopped Onions 1 large diced Garlic 4 cloves minced Celery 1 stalk chopped Beef Stew Mix 1 package Flour to coat beef Salt & Pepper to taste Directions Cut beef into chunks, season with salt and pepper and coat with flour. In a large pot, add oil and fry garlic until golden brown (over-frying the garlic will create a bitter flavor). Add beef and fry till brown on all sides. Add onions and cook till translucent, then add enough water to fill a little more than 1/2 the pot. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium and cook until beef is tender. Add carrots and celery and cook until soft. Add beef stew mix and simmer an additional 10 minutes. Add more water if needed. Taste and add more salt and pepper till desired flavor is reached. Mix flour with water and add to stew for desired thickening. 30 ORIGINS, March 2006 120th Anniversary of Oyasama
