The County’s favourite heritage festival which gives you a fantastic introduction to some of Lincolnshire’s hidden treasures, allowing guests and visitors the opportunity to visit some of these sites and iconic buildings, many of which are only open for the festival. In 2021, we are celebrating the many voices of the county that have contributed to its heritage and culture. We’re showcasing the numerous ‘unheard voices’ that don’t usually get a lot of attention. Stories from women, children, the working class and agricultural workers, minority groups and even animals that have contributed to the history of Lincolnshire. The festival will run from Friday 10th to Sunday 19th September giving everyone a whole ten days to visit the special places taking part. Lincolnshire Heritage Open Days couldn’t run without the support of dozens of organisers, hundreds of helpers and volunteers, and local councils for Lincolnshire. In particular, we would like to thank the Heritage Open Days Steering Group, who meet regularly to lead on the festival; the Events Development Group, who assist in developing new events, and local authorities whose financial contribution keeps the festival running year on year. In addition to this, the administration of the festival would not have been possible without the support of Heritage Lincolnshire’s wonderful volunteers John and Julie McDonnell, who have taken up the mantle and have worked hard behind the scenes to get everything ready. The brochure has been designed by Sue Unsworth of Heritage Lincolnshire, who we would also like to thank. Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre will celebrate Heritage Open Days on 17 and 18 September 2021. The centre will offer guided tours, craft demonstrations and additional online content to help visitors discover the amazing world of the trawlermen that helped to bring about a national dish of fish and chips. Travel back to 1950s Great Grimsby and experience the sights, sounds and smells of what it was like to be a Grimsby trawlermen as you sign on as a crew member for a journey back to the height of UK fishing. Carefully crafted sets and original preserved trawler interiors capture the atmosphere and essence of a remarkable way of life in one of the most dangerous occupations in living memory. Visitors are given the opportunity to enjoy a guided tour aboard 1950s Grimsby trawler Ross Tiger, thought to be the oldest diesel side-trawler to survive in the UK. Guided tours of this special ship, registered with National Historic Ships, give visitors the opportunity to see the conditions of life on board. They often take place with a former crew member who shares first-hand experiences of life aboard the trawler. Grimsby Fishing Heritage is a multi-award-winning museum. This Arts Council accredited museum is a five times winner of the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence and a member of the TripAdvisor Hall of Fame. It is also a winner of the Sandford Award to Heritage Education and holds the Visit England Quality Rose Marque. You can experience the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre for just £6 an adult ticket, £4 for children and £12 for a family ticket. You must pre-book your slot by calling (01472) 323345. And if you’re out and about in Grimsby town centre, why not pop to the Galley Cafe for a bite to eat? The cafe is open 11am to 4pm, serving hot and cold food and refreshments, including high quality coffee and hot chocolate by Stokes of Lincoln. Take out is also available. 4 Lincolnshire Heritage Open Days 10-19 September 2021 #LincsHODs @HeritageLincs www.heritagelincolnshire.org 5 The Lincolnshire Heritage Explorer Lincolnshire is a county rich in fascinating history and archaeology, with incredible stories to tell from the past. It has evidence and remains from our earliest Stone Age inhabitants, earthworks of many deserted medieval villages and military structures from 20th century conflicts, amongst much else. This abundant heritage is detailed in the Lincolnshire Historic Environment Record (HER), the database of all the known archaeological sites, finds and historic buildings in the county. Lincolnshire County Council have just launched a new webservice, which gives access to many of the records contained in the HER, helping people to discover the amazing wealth of evidence of the county’s past and the opportunity to find out about the history of their neighbourhoods. It’s called the Lincolnshire Heritage Explorer, and can be accessed online. The site combines a user-friendly map with a simple search function, making it really easy for people to find records of archaeological sites, finds and historic structures. It also includes details of all of the known archaeological investigations, excavations and surveys that have been conducted in the county and points out where further information about all of these records can be found. Links to a wide variety of online heritage resources, information and groups are also available on the site, allowing everyone the chance to explore Lincolnshire’s past from the comfort of their own homes. Inns on the Edge In the heritage world we know a lot about the historic landmarks in our towns and villages, like our local churches, and stately homes. A type of heritage that often gets overlooked is our local pubs. They are often at the heart of communities, and mean a lot to local people. The buildings themselves are often old, and are sometimes older than they might first appear. Not only that but they also represent a wealth of rich stories about places. Even before the Covid-19 pandemic pubs were closing at an alarming rate, and the pandemic is likely to have made the situation worse. So we in the Historic Places Team at Lincolnshire County Council decided that we would look into this rather neglected aspect of our heritage. The Inns on the Edge project, funded by Historic England, is an exciting project that we will be working on until summer 2022. The project will research and record the architectural and social history of pubs along a 50 mile stretch of the Lincolnshire Coast from Grimsby to Boston. The project will work with colleagues, partners and communities to promote and celebrate the value of Lincolnshire’s historic pubs to society, tourism and the local economy through social media, trails and an end of project exhibition. #LincsHODs @HeritageLincs www.heritagelincolnshire.org 7 The Lincolnshire Coast One thing many of us have realised as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic is how important nature and heritage is to us; how much we value it, and that perhaps we didn’t realise how much. This is true of all our countryside and outdoors heritage attractions and sites. It is also very much the case with Lincolnshire’s beautiful and unique coastline. Work to recognise the importance of the Lincolnshire coastline was underway before the pandemic struck, and has continued throughout, albeit at a rather slower pace for obvious reasons. A partnership between Lincolnshire County Council, Natural England, Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust and East Lindsey District Council has submitted an application to the National Designations team at Natural England for Heritage Coast ‘definition’. If we are successful, this will give the right recognition and help to conserve one of the best stretches of unspoiled coastline in the country. We will also be finding out more about the ten thousand year old story of the evolution of the coast, which we will be sharing with you all. Work continues on the development of the Coastal Country Park, and you can find out more online at Coastal country park – Lincolnshire County Council One of those developments is at the former Sandilands golf course, a project being led by the National Trust in partnership with the Coastal Country Park. They are planning to create a new habitat for a variety of wildlife, especially migrating birds. The Lincolnshire coast is one of the most important stretches of the English coastline for wildlife as a stop-over on the ‘fly-way’ migration route. Their vision for the reserve is to create a space where everyone can enjoy the benefits of being in nature. The 11th stretch of the England Coast Path to open is in Lincolnshire between the two traditional seaside resorts of Skegness and Mablethorpe – 16 miles (26 km) of constantly changing coastline. A new boardwalk now links the two promenades by the purpose- built North Sea Observatory at Chapel Point, Chapel St Leonards, improving accessibility for all. There is so much still to discover about Lincolnshire’s fascinating history and landscapes, and we hope you’ll join us on the journey to explore and find out more.

8 Lincolnshire Heritage Open Days 10-19 September 2021 H ERITAGE L INCOLNSHIRE Visit Boston Boston was once a centre of trade, and second only to London in the United Kingdom. Much of the rich history of the town is still evident today as visitors navigate their way around the tapestry of streets and walkways. The tower of “The Stump” (St. Botolph’s Church) can be seen from miles around and is a must visit. Nearby, Boston Guildhall is a magnificent medieval building built in the 1390’s and is now a fascinating visitor attraction. Boston also has a wide variety of sports clubs and activities for all ages, which can be found at Active Lincolnshire. Weekly markets are held every Wednesday and Saturdays, making it ideal for both a mid-week or a weekend break. The Medieval Lanes are filled with independent shops and many of your favourite High Street stores can be found in Pescod Square. An eclectic mix of English and European restaurants and cafes share a range of menus. For evening entertainment, look out for events at Blackfriars Theatre and Arts Centre. Around Boston you’ll find yet more heritage with Hussey Tower, two RSPB nature reserves (Freiston Shore and Frampton Marsh) and within easy reach is the coastal resort of Skegness. #LincsHODs @HeritageLincs www.heritagelincolnshire.org 9 South Kesteven Explore South Lincolnshire's Kesteven, tucked in the Hidden South-East corner of Heritage Lincolnshire, yet easily Hotspot accessible by train and road, is the perfect place to discover world class heritage, while enjoying stunning countryside, fabulous food, and family friendly attractions. Medieval churches and alms-houses nestle between the Georgian facades of Stamford: England’s finest stone town. With more than 600 listed buildings, every inch of Stamford packs a punch for lovers of history and architecture, whether they are visiting one of the towns stunning churches, the beautiful Browne’s Hospital, taking in the high street, or enjoying a picnic on Stamford Meadows. Neighbouring Burghley House, with all its Elizabethan splendour, is a favourite for visitors and locals alike. This year Burghley celebrates the 500th anniversary of the birth of William Cecil – Lord High treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I and builder of the house itself. Visible for miles around, the magnificent spire of St Wulfram’s church dominates Grantham’s skyline. The town’s heritage is intertwined with Britain’s industrial past, but it has its share of antiquity and natural heritage too. The medieval Trigge Library is a must-see, and the recently restored and award winning Wyndham Park is the perfect place for a riverside picnic.

Grantham has recently been awarded funding by Historic England as a High Street Heritage Action Zone, which will see many of the town’s historic buildings regenerated and an exciting three year programme of cultural activities celebrating the town’s history. Discover the stories of Grantham’s most famous faces at Grantham Museum, or follow in the footsteps of Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking and visit nearby Woolsthope Manor: Newton’s birthplace and childhood home, where you can discover his theories for yourself. Bourne is a charming market town with a stunning park containing the earthworks of an ancient castle, and another which contains a traditional Lido. Visit Baldock’s Mill Heritage Centre to see one of the country’s finest collections of motor racing memorabilia, celebrating local racing legend Raymond Mays. Nearby Grimsthorpe Castle is well worth a visit to see the remarkable Vanbrugh Hall and the beautiful gardens. The picturesque ancient town and villages which make up the Deepings are wonderful to explore. Enjoy beautiful riverside walks, independent shops and some of the best fish and chips in the area. The stunning setting is complemented by ancient buildings, including the cavernous Priory Church in Deeping St James which echoes with pre- dissolution splendour. In between the market towns are over 80 beautiful villages, ripe for exploration, offering insights into Britain’s heritage from the Romans to The Archers. lovelincolnshirewolds.com Ayscoughfee Set in 5.5 acres of beautiful gardens in the heart of the town, this Grade I listed Hall is one of the finest late medieval houses in Lincolnshire - and is rated as Spalding’s number one attraction on TripAdvisor. Hall A stone’s throw from the town centre and set a few yards from the River Welland, this illustrious location is one of the finest places in Spalding to enjoy on a summer’s day. The unusual name is believed to come from the Ayscough family, to be combined with the ‘Knight’s Fee’ associated with living from the property. The Ayscoughs took a prominent part in the Civil War, settling in Lincolnshire in the 1640s. Another prominent name associated with the Hall is Maurice Johnson, a renowned barrister known as ‘The Antiquary’ who helped found Spalding Gentlemen’s Society in 1710. The grade I listed building closed for three years in 2003 for renovation and refurbishment, opening in 2006 to much acclaim. Backed by lottery funding, and the support of South Holland District Council, this fascinating building reveals much of the rich history of Spalding and the surrounding Lincolnshire Fens, as well as its own origins.

It was a far cry from the early days of the Hall, built in the 1450s (according to tree-ring dating on the timbers which puts them back to 1451) as a private home in a town then renowned for its wool-trade at its point on the River Welland. There are many interesting features within the building, including the Roundel – a sculpture above an external doorway that has been interpreted in a number of ways, perhaps showing a knighthood being conferred or a baptism. Outside, the formal gardens feature an 18th century yew tree walk and an ornamental lake headed by a listed War Memorial by the celebrated architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. A new Spalding World War II memorial was officially opened in March 2019, through the fundraising efforts of a Committee formed from local veterans, District Councillors and others. There are tennis courts, a bowling green and a putting green if you are feeling more active, or you can stop off at the café for refreshments while feeding the friendly ducks. There are also a number of different events that take place in the gardens throughout the year such as open air productions, music concerts and historical re-enactments. Of particular note is the annual 1940s weekend organised by South Holland District Council, which last year attracted around 8,000 people to the memorabilia displays, live music and more.

The area is characterised by endless countryside, interspersed with bustling and charming towns and villages and a surprisingly rich tapestry of both attractions and distractions – public art, heritage, leisure, culture and shopping – meaning there’s plenty to do, whatever the weather.

How to Use This Guide We hope this guide is a useful tool in helping you to get out and make the most of the festival. Have a read of the key points below to ensure that you have a safe and memorable time. COVID-19 – Subject to change depending on latest government guidelines. Event organisers and volunteers have been working hard to ensure the safety of both visitors and the event teams. You can help make sure everyone stays safe by following government guidance and: • Wearing a face covering whilst attending the event • Making use of hand sanitising facilities where available • Maintaining social distancing of at least 1m • Most Importantly, if you have a temperature of more than 38° or have flu-like symptoms, then please stay home and do not attend the event Event organisers have been asked to implement and monitor this guidance. They are also primarily volunteers, so please help us to keep them and yourself safe by following any other reasonable requests they might have regarding COVID-19. To assist the government in tracking and tracing, event organisers will also be keeping a record of those booked on to their event, which will be sent to Heritage Lincolnshire for safe keeping once the event ends. The Old Nick was the first purpose-built police station and magistrates court in Lincolnshire. Come and step back in time, have your photo taken in the stocks and see inside a Police box. Visitors are then welcome to take some refreshment in our cafeteria after which they can watch a short enactment of the sentencing of an offender in the court .
