FROM THE DESK OF THE SECRETARY: Greetings from ‘Rajnagar Reward Welfare Association’ This year we emphasized on Livelihood development through integrating all the interventions in one area, whether it is Education, Health & Hygiene, Women empowerment, Sustainable Agriculture, and Social rights. Hence, we observed that our interventional endeavor with the approach towards sustainable development would be successful if we establish the proper networking with our neighboring organizations. Our coaching centers are able to boost up the

educational barriers of our tribal children, due to different language, continuous efforts towards Self Help Groups resulted in sustainable motivation, and the INSIDE practice of sustainable agriculture has been reducing the cost of production. EDUCATION Early Childhood boost up education programme:

The coaching center concept has been modified to early childhood boost up education programme to eradicate the barriers of education of our tribal children due to different language. Their mother tongue is following the Alchiki language and in school 95% teachers are not

able to understand this language, hence, in the anganwaries children were not able to even learn the basic writing. Now, with our effort to prepare the children for class 1 we have focused the nursery children to boost up the education. Along with that malnutrition check with the help of local health worker, and hygiene consciousness in among the children and the parents are being emphasized.

Now we are able to enlist 275 children from 5 villages of Rajnagar, 1 village in Sainthia with 25 children, 1 village

in Bankura with 15 children, and 1 in Burdwan with 20 children.

Income generation activities through vocational unit:

Vocational unit has been able to motivate the women and establish one unit for preparing handicrafts “Creative Rajnagar”, through this group the prepared items are being sold by the women in many fairs including Poush mela. This year in Christmas this group were able to receive an order from Italy for Christmas Decorations and

successfully delivered the order in Italy. Next year the team will be participating in SABALA fair in Kolkata. Our children from the coaching centers will be able to avail the benefits of

computer training from the next year also, with the help of our existing students the computer center is developed to a mini

café.

Health

The continuous health awareness programme helped the community of Raotara in Rajnagar to deal with a sudden water infected diarrhea, which could have turned into an epidemic. When the community came to know that in so many of their neighboring houses people are affected with diarrhea they became conscious and started washing all the clothes, used anti -bacterial to clean their house premises, and also made ready with ORS.

The local administration also was very active and supplied water for the people as much as needed, the medical team were there building one booth and checking up primary symptoms, and Reward also kept 24 hours ambulance service to avoid any delay. Reward will supply water filters made of clay in the next year specially with the initiation of monsoon.

Swaccha Bharat Aviyan is continuing since 2014 and in the beginning the tribal community was not able to cope up with the new habit to use toilets, but gradually the percentage increased and communities learned to make the toilet their life’s part.

“this is my toilet said Dhena Murmu”, from Bhabanipur panchayat of Rajnagar.

Sarkar Marandi a 14 years old boy is a very good football player but 2 years back his feet was injured and since then he was not able to play, run or walk for a long time. When Reward found out the issue with networking Sarkar’s treatment has been initiated. We wish him best of luck.

Sustainable Agriculture

Nutritional garden: 25 Self Help Groups from Rajnagar, Ruppur, Illambazar and Sainthia have implemented the concept ‘My Food Basket’ concept. Seasonal vegetables and spinaches are being produced in the nutritional garden. In the bank of the pond Water gourd, ridge gourd, and bitter gourd have been cultivated.

The production satisfied not only individual families but also the women group sold the products and earn regularly. As the seeds are being provided by Reward except labour and cow dung to the vermi compost, no extra cost has been occurred.

Mango Orchards: Reward has been provided with mango orchards by the block on lease to proper utilization of the orchards. We have given local tribal group the responsibility to take care of the orchards, while pre-production and production stage and the profit will go the local group, hence before the cultivation period these groups are able earn for their family and learn the marketing strategies.

The lease amount was of Rs. 20000/- twenty thousand but the groups were able to earn gross 52000/- in the three months of mango season. Hopefully next year we will be able to involve the groups again in their lean period.

Animal rearing awareness & revolving programme:

1. Beneficiaries learnt about the shelter structure of the animals. 2. As Reward’s volunteer is helping with the medicines and

diseases of the animals regularly, beneficiaries now became concern to inform about their animal’s health. 3. In 2014 we started to provide animal as an asset for the

poor, with the condition to take back the production in 3:2 ratio, now 60% successful families were able to increase their asset and regularly these assets are being revolving to help new beneficiaries.
