Can you believe it? January is already gone. I can’t even believe 2017 is gone, let alone January of 2018! Our Jamboree is coming quickly and we have an all star lineup for you! This year, Coach Herman Edwards will be our Keynote Speaker. Most of you will remember him as ESPN’s Senior Professional Football Analyst. Or perhaps you may remember him as the head coach for the New York Jets and the Kansas City Chiefs. Joining Coach Edwards will be former Virginia Tech Head Football Coach Frank Beamer along with current JMU Head Football Coach Mike Houston. Not to mention all of the outstanding athletes and coaches we will have receiving awards. Snow muted our attendance for the first meeting of the year, and that’s a shame. Nancy Helman, Director of the City of Virginia Beach Sports Marketing Department, was the speaker and it was fascinating to learn all that our area does to attract sporting events to the area. At our second meeting in January we were privileged to have Matt Smiley of the Virginia State Golf Association. He updated us on all the rule changes coming next year, some of which are pretty major. Who wasn’t surprised when C.H. Lambert found out from Mr. Smiley that there is a rule that can permit you to remove your ball from a sand trap? And are 15¼“holes really in golf’s future? Once again First Vice President Bill Emerson has an outstanding lineup of speakers for us. On February 5th David Teel, the renowned sports writer for the Daily Press will be our speaker. And for all of you ODU football fans, former ODU quarterback and current CFL quarterback Thomas DeMarco will be sharing his experiences with us on February 19th. 3 downs and 110 yards? Just how does that translate? Please think not only about who you can invite, but who you can bring to our luncheons. There are a lot of people out there who would love to hang out and talk sports with someone, let alone get to hear the quality of guest speakers we have. You will be doing them a favor by bringing them while helping grow our club.

Until next month, Joe Monaco
