DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY

What’s new in Year 11 Design and Technology? Thinking caps were on as the students were given Olivia their second mini design brief. Students this time Traveller zip apart laundry had to design and create a carrying device. This bag device had to make carrying an identified item easier for the end user. The use of “cognitive organisers” was employed to brainstorm ideas, record ideas and then the design process started. Research into existing carrying devices, the identified need, constraints, suitable materials and resources available then occurred. Over several weeks students then designed, evaluated and reimagined some existing ideas to create new carrying devices. Bronte In addition to the practical aspect of the course, Girls laptop backpack students also produce an annotated design folio reflecting the full design process. Wherever possible the premise of design with sustainability was employed. Many students reused existing materials and recycled fabrics to create a bag for special purposes. Congratulations to the students who worked consistently and creatively on these projects.

Years 9 – 11 Drama classes had the privilege of viewing Zeal Theatre’s play “King Hit”, which is based on the one-punch phenomena. “King-Hit examines violence amongst young people, the perpetrators, victims, witnesses and the so-called ‘innocent bystanders’ and offers alternative perspectives to reckless and abusive behaviour” (Zeal Theatre). Our students then took part in an intensive workshop session and were complimented on their creative and perceptive workshop ideas.

BBUUMMPPSS IITT UUPP!! Meeting the Premier’s Priority to increase the proportion of NSW students in the top two NAPLAN bands for reading and numeracy by 5% by 2019 “Students with strong literacy and numeracy skills are more likely to remain at school longer, complete their Higher School Certificate and continue on to tertiary education.” (BIU Fact Sheet) The Bump It Up strategy focusses on identifying students who are doing well and who, the data suggests, have the greatest capacity to achieve in the top two NAPLAN bands. By identifying students who are currently achieving in the middle bands of NAPLAN, and implementing locally-developed targeted initiatives, we can improve their performance in reading and numeracy and enhance their overall education outcomes. (BIU Fact Sheet) We must address this target and report on it each term. We must also report on it in our Annual School Report and include it in our School Plan. How will this priority be achieved?  NAPLAN data from 2015/2016 analysed and areas of improvement identified  A team has been established with representatives across all KLAs  Literacy and Numeracy strategies to be implemented across all KLAs  Strategies include Super Six Comprehension Strategies with a focus on Inference (based on NAPLAN analysis 2015/2016)  Explicit Teaching Strategies in Fractions and Decimals, Patterns, Angles (based on NAPLAN analysis 2015/2016)  Literacy & Numeracy Continuums  Formative Assessment  Interactive Learning Tools e.g. Wordflyers How can parents help?  There are excellent tips for parents with strategies as to how they can help their children with reading and mathematics. On Tuesday, 18 October, Year 11 students attended their first live theatre viewing as part of their HSC studies. This opportunity has enabled students to gain a deeper understanding of one of their HSC texts and furthered their understanding and appreciation of how impactful performances are built. Our students had some great things to say about the play…. “Being able to see the play and experience the incredible calibre of the actors involved, was such a special and worthwhile experience. This allowed me to appreciate the play we will be studying, to such a greater degree.” Ben “I really enjoyed the play and the opportunity to experience a level of theatre I hadn't before. Viewing this and seeing the level of focus actors can have to create a truly impactful performance, has inspired me for our future performances as drama students.” Vicki Our Drama students and teachers would like to thank all the support that allowed this excursion to go ahead. Creative Writing with Year Nine

Year 9 are currently undertaking a short story unit where they explore the wonders of the written world. Below are two excerpts from Lily and Kristen of 9EA. They were given the task of creatively describing either a leaf or old watch. This is what they came up with:

The leaf danced along the footpath, its frayed, brown edges hitting stray weeds and bright yellow daffodils. Its beautiful vivid centre sprayed out like a firework gradually changing to a chestnut brown around the edges. It lifted up once again and like a ballet dancer elegantly flew across the sky a metre ahead of me and then fell. Crashed. Half broken. I picked it up, the edges, crumbled when I touched it.
