At any rate, we have many fun and exciting events in store for you this July and August. Every Tuesday night, there is a Sea Music concert, and there is a Sing & Swim party, and the picnic at Jean Ritchie and George Pickow’s home in August. We are also very excited about the Eisteddfod festival, which for many years was held in Massachusetts, but has not been active for quite a while. The club is happy to revive the festival in New York. Come as one of the many volunteers needed or just come to enjoy the festival as a participant. Read more about it in this issue. Remember that our summer issue covers July and August. The next issue will be in September. It’s not too soon to think about our fall weekend, especially if you are interested in any of the weekend jobs or scholarships Thank you also to the volunteers who help to put out the newsletter each month and ensure that you get the word about what’s going on in the club and in events throughout the city. They could always use more help. More information: contact Mark Maniak at 1-718-630-1421; 608 80th Street, Apt. 3F Brooklyn, NY 11209; HELP SUPPORT THE FESTIVAL! As you all can see in the Newsletter flyer, the Club is reviving one of the great tradi- tional festivals, the Eisteddfod, in Brooklyn this summer. We hope that it will be a great success and that this will be the first of many. We hope the Eisteddfod will become a fixture in New York, as it was in Massachusetts for so many years. It is a superb staff and should be a really extraordinary time. We are asking our members to consider giving some extra support to this event, and to the Club for which it stands. Whenever we have approached our members for support, you have all been extraordinarily gener- ous. It is a very large project to put on a festival such as this, something we have not done before, and there is some risk involved. If you can support the festival with a gift of $20 or $50, or whatever you can manage, it would be a great help and a statement that the Club has the support of the membership in undertaking a bold new venture in traditional music. Any contributions are essentially contributions to the Special Projects Fund which was established some years ago by the Club precisely for such events as this. If you can help, please send a check, made out to FMSNY, to festival director Jerry Epstein, 34-13 87th Street, Jackson Heights, NY 11372. Be sure to note that the check is for the Eisteddfod. If you have any questions, call Jerry at 1-718-429-3437. Eisteddfod-NY Comments As with so many things, we are so busy doing them that we never get to explaining them in the newsletter. Here’s a few brief comments. As mentioned above, the Eisteddfod ran for many years at the University of Mass at North Dartmouth -- using an assortment or available spaces. So it’s particularly appropriate that we’re at a University, with similar spaces available. The performers, for this first festival, are drawn heavily from past Eisteddfod performers with the advice of Howard Glasser. The dates were set by the only available dates at Polytech. Come to the Eisteddfod -- this is just the beginning, with your input and help next year will be even better! -Don Wade Fall Weekend Help Wanted (continued) Typist/Room Assigner: Types the address list and assigns rooms; sends out the advance schedules. (full Scholarship) - 7 - MILTON ROGOVIN review The late Becky Berman introduced me to this remarkable man when she brought his “Triptych” book to some club weekends. Milton Rogovin, still going strong at age 93, was a Buffalo, New York optometrist who ran afoul of H.U.A.C. back in the 50s — they called him “Buffalo’s top red”. His business suffered as a result, and he took up photography. Over many years, he took endless photos in the poorer neighborhoods of Buffalo, often revisiting the same people. The “Triptych” book consists of sets of three photos, each being the same family members at widely spaced intervals. The photos are touching and riveting, and some bring tears to my eyes each time I see them. I showed the book to Pete Seeger and he was equally moved. I asked for a quote and he sent me the following — “Triptych! I never knew till now what this Latin word meant. This beautiful book, from the patriarch of a beautiful family in Buffalo, now defines it for us all. L’chaim!” -Pete Seeger On June 18 I attended the opening reception for an exhibit of his photos at the New York Historical Society, “Remembering the Forgotten Ones”, which is also the title of his new book of photos. It’s an excellent exhibit, which includes a film and informative audio devices, and the book is a fine companion to the first volume, with many new photos, including some that add a fourth picture to the original sets of three. The exhibit will run through Oct. 12, 2003. The museum is at Central Park West and 77th Street; 212-873-3400. The new book is published by The Quantuck Lane Press, New York, distributed by W. W. Norton & Co., Inc, 500 Fifth Avenue, NY NY 10110. By all means, check out this very special exhibit. During your visit, you can leaf through the new book as well, in the museum store. ——Sol Weber Concert Review - Over the Rainbow: Music to the lyrics of E.Y. “YIP” HARBURG On June 20, a bunch of us enjoyed a rare evening at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in Green- wich Village, for the first of three special performances. Perhaps there will be more in the future, and I believe there will be a recording available later. The performers were that famous duo, William Bolcom and Joan Morris, joined by the legendary Max Morath. Yip Harburg wrote lyrics for 537 songs, most famously those for The Wizard of Oz and Finian’s Rainbow. The music for his wonderful words came from Harold Arlen, his friend Ira Gershwin, Jule Styne, Johnny Green, Burton Lane, Jay Gorney, Sammy Fain, and many others. These three veteran performers did a bang up job presenting a program of great songs — funny, powerful, romantic, or sophisticated. There was an emotional and wrenching “Brother, Can You Spare a Dime” that had us all in tears, and at the other extreme, the riotous, “Lydia, the Tattooed Lady.” There were more than two dozen songs, including “Ding Dong! The Witch is Dead”; “April in Paris”; “Panache”; “...Glocca Morra”; “It’s Only a Paper Moon”; “Look to the Rainbow”; the naughty “Begat”; the witty “The Springtime Cometh” — pause for breath. Also, they sang the sardonic, “Will You Love Me Monday Morning As You Did on Friday Night?”; the memorable “That Something Extra Special”; “Let’s Take a Walk Around the Block”; “If This Isn’t Love”; the cynical “When the Idle Poor Become the Idle Rich”, and many more, of course closing with “Over the Rainbow.” Yip left us in 1981, but his spirit was certainly with us that night. ———Sol Weber

Flyers? Can you give out Eisteddfod or Weekend flyers? We’ll send you a supply: Contact Don Wade, 1-718-426-8555; [email protected].. - 8 - JOIN A PINEWOODS COMMITTEE As you know, Pinewoods sponsors lots of great Folk Music Events in the area. The work in planning and running these events is done primarily by a volunteer Board of Directors. WE CAN ALWAYS USE ADDITIONAL HELP. Did you just say “How can I help out”? I’m glad you asked. You can help out by joining the Board, which meets the second Monday of each month. Or you can join a committee — you don’t have to be a Board Member in order to be on a committee. The committees meet a few times during the year. But as you know, the actual work goes on throughout the year. Or if you simply have a suggestion or recommendation for one of the committees, you are welcome to share it with the Chairperson. If you would like to join the Board, contact any one of the Board members. Their names and contact information are listed on page 4 of this newsletter or introduce yourself to a Board Member at one of our events. If you would like to join a committee, here is a brief description of what each committee does, along with the Chairperson’s name: PUBLICITY COMMITTEE: Chairperson - Steve Suffet The job of the Publicity Committee is to publicize club events. In addition to supply- ing timely information to the newsletter editor, the Publicity Committee sees that press releases are written and sent, flyers are produced and distributed, notices of club events are placed on various Internet sites, and, when appropriate, advertisements are placed in publications. The Publicity Committee also works to cultivate contacts in the print and broadcast media. MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE: Chairperson – Anne Price The membership committee is responsible for maintaining and expanding the member- ship. This includes sending reminders to members to renew their memberships, sending membership checks to the treasurer, and maintaining membership records. The commit- tee helps to recruit new members by helping distribute newsletters and other publicity at concerts and other locations where potential members might be. The committee is currently engaged in preparing a new brochure to help promote new memberships. FINANCE COMMITTEE: Chairperson – Jerry Epstein The Finance Committee makes recommendations to the Board on all aspects relating to the Club’s Finances. Once a year, we review the financial figures for the current year and draw up a proposed budget for the coming fiscal year. Based on the financial figures, the committee may make recommendations on pricing of club events, dues, fundraising and so on. In practice the committee has met mostly only once a year un- less a specific charge comes to it from the Board. There is a separate committee on investments, which makes recommendations to the Board on the investment of funds for scholarships and for the special projects fund. PROGRAM COMMITTEE: Chairperson – Evy Mayer This very popular committee is currently full. However, if anyone has any suggestions for performers for any of our events, feel free to contact Evy. Hope we hear from you soon! Alice Backer Recording Secretary

Office Space Needed The Club is looking for office space more appropriate than our current office. We need space for a desk (with our computer and phone), file cabinet and 2 storage cabinets in a place that is accessible evenings, nights and weekends so our volunteers can get there after their day jobs. We also need access to an area that we can use 2 evenings a month for our board meetings (20 people) and our newsletter mailings. We’re looking for a Manhattan location with no cats; something shared with another nonprofit might be ideal. This is a continuing search; if you have any ideas, contact Don Wade, 1718- 426-8555 or e-mail .
