Run to affect traffic Traffic on Fort Carson will be affected Tuesday morning during the 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson installation run. The run, which will include thousands of Soldiers, begins at 6:15 a.m. and is expected to be complete by 8 a.m. The map to the left shows the run route. The 4th Inf. Div. command team and Soldiers from separate battalions will start at Manhart Field, heading northbound on Wetzel Avenue, turning east on Ellis Street. The formation will be joined by the three brigade combat teams at Pershing Field for the remainder of the run. Magrath Avenue is the only road that will be closed for the event — as it always is during physical training hours. The other roads will not be officially closed, but drivers should be aware that traffic will be significantly slowed along this route.

President Woodrow Wilson in 1919 proclaimed Nov. 11 as Armistice Day, a day to remember the more than 4 million Americans who served in the trenches of Europe during World War I and the 126,000 servicemembers who lost their lives. Army wrestling coach Shon Lewis stood off by himself moments before the start of the 2011 Armed Forces Wrestling tournament. The coach for the most dominant era of Army wrestling at the Armed Forces Championship — the Army had won the past 14 events — sensed something was in the air. Lewis looked like a man who had too many questions and not enough answers. He looked like he was more concerned than confident that his team would continue its dominance at the event. As he spoke before the tournament, Lewis said there was reason to be concerned about how well this team would fare against a Marines team, which looked confident and ready to dethrone the champions. It would have been easy to think Lewis was using “coach speak” when he said there were a lot of reasons to be concerned, but the Marines showed in the first match of the tournament that Lewis’ reservations were not coach speak, but that of a man who understood how much talent was on the Marines roster. The event opened Nov. 4 with the Greco-Roman competition, the Army team made Lewis’ concerns Fort Carson’s Dremiel Byers controls the match against his Marine opponent during the Greco-Roman event held Nov. 4 at the Special seem moot, sweeping the Marines Events Center. Byers is one of the favorites to represent the to the Marine team as it entered the freestyle The fate of the Army rested on the shoulders nation at the upcoming Summer Olympics in event. The first match saw the Marines come out of National Champion Dremiel Byers, a wrestler London. He has stood toe-to-toe with some of the best wrestlers in the world, and defeated many of them. But that is in his best event, Greco-Roman. Byers has never represented the Army in the freestyle event because his teammate Tim Taylor is usually in that event. Taylor suffered a severe arm injury prior to the competition and could not compete. “Byers had never competed in the freestyle event and while I was confident he would be successful, because that is the champion he is, we still asked a lot of the national champion,” Lewis said. Byers overcame a determined effort by the Marine heavyweight to win the gold medal and ensure the Army would win this competition. It was a memorable moment for Byers because this could be the last time he wrestles competitively for the Army. Lewis said Byers showed why he is one of the best wrestlers in the world with the effort he gave. “Byers and our team have proven over the years that they are champions and this was one of the best efforts the team has given us. Facility depicts Story and photos by Nel Lampe Denver area Mountaineer staff An Army Airfield, named for U.S. Army Lt. Francis B. Lowry, was built in Denver in 1918. It was relocated in 1939 to Army, another site near East 6th Avenue and Quebec Street in Aurora. Exhibits in the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum depict Army Air Corps and Air Force history, as well as the history of Lowry Army Field ,which Air Force later became Lowry Air Force Base. Lowry Air Force Base closed in October 1994. Although most of the former base is now a housing and commercial area, two hangars and a chapel remain. history The museum is housed in Hangar One, built in 1939. About two dozen aircraft are displayed in the hangar, including a B-1 bomber, which is one of only two B-1 bombers displayed anywhere. A B-52 aircraft is displayed in front of the huge hangar. Displays in the hangar include a 1926 Alexander Eaglerock biplane, made in Colorado. A rare B-18A Bolo Douglas aircraft from World War II is also displayed. Air Force jet aircraft include the F-102A Delta Dagger, F-104C Starfighter, F-101B Voodoo, F-105D Thunderchief and an F-100D Super Sabre. There’s an F-14 Tomcat that was used by the Navy beginning in 1971, an FB-111A “Aardvark,” an F-4E Phantom II and an EB-57E Canberra. There’s a Piper J-3 Cub and an FP-404 biplane. There’s one helicopter in the hangar, an H-21 Workhorse. Perhaps one of the most popular aircraft in the museum is a three-quarter scale T-65 X-wing Starfighter. The X-Wing was brought to Denver for a Star Wars celebration held at the Wings Over the Rockies Museum. Although the aircraft sometimes travels to promotional appearances elsewhere, it continues to make the museum its home. There’s an FG-1D Corsair used in World War II and the , a T-33A T-Bird — the first jet trainer in the Air Force — and a UC-45 Expeditor transport used by the U.S. Army and Navy. The museum observes open cockpit day Saturday, when the cockpit of an airplane is open to visitors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Exhibits include a timeline of technology, the Howard Model Collection, the

Eisenhower room, the Lowry room, the Colorado Aviation Historical Society room and the Colorado Air National Guard room. Other exhibits include the Science of Flight, History of Avionics, The Flying Tigers and the Colorado Aviation Historical Society Heritage of Aircraft. The museum has several interactive exhibits, including a “Nose Art” and “Tribute to a Fighter Pilot” exhibits. A space station module was a mock-up for a proposed space station. There’s an Apollo Command Module boilerplate replica used to train astronauts for Apollo missions. There’s also an interstage skirt from a IV rocket and several scale models related to space. Lowry was seen in the movie “The Glenn Miller Story,” starring actor Jimmy Stewart. Lowry Air Force Base also served as home for cadets while the Air Force Academy construction was under way. Cadets had classes and military training at the air base for three years before moving to the new campus. President Dwight Eisenhower used Denver as his summer white house. The Eisenhowers’ dining room furniture was donated to the Lowry Officers’ Club and is now displayed in the museum. Shopping centers, commercial buildings, offices, houses, condominiums, Just the parks and landscaping are now on the land that was once Lowry Air Force Base.
