Detailed surveying determined the area of high ground located immediately to the southwest of the current buildings may be associated with an earlier phase of settlement on the site. To the north-west potential charcoal burning was identified and to the east of this a former field system was visible. A field to the south of Cutlers Farm contained strong magnetic responses. They were small-scale industrial in strength and could have been of archaeological interest. To the southeast of Newlands Farm a sub-circular enclosure was noted. Elsewhere field drains, pipes and other anomalies caused by modern practices were evident. [Au(abr)]

Eastry, Kent GSB Prospection Thornton : GSB Prospection, 2005, 11pp, figs, refs Work undertaken by: GSB Prospection Resistance survey in the village failed to show conclusive evidence for Anglo-Saxon settlement. However, a few high resistance anomalies in these areas had some archaeological potential. In fact, excavation of one of these anomalies immediately adjacent to Eastry Court revealed a possible floor surface and other responses elsewhere in the gardens were associated with masonry of varying dates. Modern garden features were also detected. The magnetic survey over Hillborough Hill indicated a low level of background response. A band of strong anomalies curving round the hill to the north and west corresponded to a crop mark visible on aerial photographs, this was revealed by excavation to have been the filled-in remains of a hollow way. An unexpected and exciting find was the discovery of a cross-shaped anomaly in the centre of the survey area. This proved to have been the location of a former windmill probably of medieval date. An area of increased magnetic response coincided with a group of large pits and ditches also medieval in date. [Au]

GPR and resistance survey in and around St. Nicholas' Church failed to show any evidence for the "lost" chapel. Extensive landscaping and consolidation had occurred on the site. The magnetic and resistance survey over the earthworks at Manor Farm proved far more positive. Resistance provided a relatively clear plan of building foundations associated with the medieval manor. Some wall lines were identified. The magnetic survey confirmed this data. [Au(adp)]

Initial GPS and Geophysical Survey Russell M, Welham K & Russell B Bournemouth : Bournemouth University, 2005, 36pp, figs, refs Work undertaken by: Bournemouth University Topographic and geophysical surveys were conducted over the area of the villa in order to locate and accurately plot the ground plan. A building comprising a range of rooms set around at least three sides of a large courtyard measuring approximately 80 by 90m. The western wing was likely to have formed the foundations for an early 20th century barn. The area previously investigated in 1909 was not as previously thought a small villa, but the south-western corner of a considerably larger structure, comparing favourably with the Roman palace at Fishbourne. The state of survival was unknown, though a series of anomalies in the southern and northern ranges may be interpreted as areas of solid floor or collapsed hypocaust. Nothing in the new survey compared with the foundations exposed in 1817 which appeared to have been conducted to the north of the 2005 survey. A possible terraced garden was recorded to the south of the palace and a 15m wide anomaly was recorded running through the centre of the eastern wing of the site. [Au(abr)]
