Rhona Day and Rata Kindergartens welcome two new head teachers SOUTH CANTERBURY KINDERGARTENS

Both Rhona Day and Rata kindergartens have recently welcomed new head teachers to their existing staffing teams. Leesa Reeves is at Rhona Day, and Janine Donaldson at Rata. Both bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience, and are keen to bring new ideas into their kindergartens as they work with the already established teaching teams. Rhona Day and Rata kindergartens are part of enviroschools, weaving this seamlessly alongside the early childhood curriculum. This gives both kindergartens a point of difference that supports and encourages tamariki to be eco-friendly, sharing sustainable practices for now and into the future. Both Rhona Day and Rata have strong connections within the Temuka community, and Leesa and Janine are excited about becoming familiar faces. Temuka ‘Blooms’ again for Daffodil Day Temuka’s annual Daffodil Day breakfast fundraiser is fast becoming tradition for many workplaces on the first day of August. Temuka volunteers are always the first to kick-off Daffodil Day month around South Canterbury with a good hearty feed for all and this year was no exception. Austin 92’s Craig and Karl came to the party, cooking up a storm in the RSA kitchen, whilst students from Opihi College served up breakfast. Over one hundred people attended the fundraiser. Daffodil Day is held each year on the last Friday of August and is one of the Cancer Society’s biggest fundraisers throughout the year. With no government funding the Society relies on the public for donations, bequests and hold a lot of fundraisers throughout the year. Val Hatton, Helen Christie and Del Skerten who make up the team of Temuka volunteers who organise the breakfast were extremely pleased again to see such fantastic local support. “We are very appreciative and humbled by the effort of workplaces to send staff along each year to support the cause” said Val Hatton “it seems to grow each year which is just wonderful to see. All monies raised from this breakfast stay local to assist the Cancer Society South Canterbury office to support over 350 people each year with a cancer diagnosis. Gardening with Albert Spring is here - time to get busy in the garden

Apply lots of lime and a good dressing of super phosphate and a little potash is helpful. Do not apply animal manure or artificial manure that contains a lot of nitrogen. Peas can be sown throughout September and October. They do not need much nitrogenous manure, earth them up when they are about 10cm high and apply string and stakes to keep them off the ground.
