This time last year we were arriving into the final round with unfortunately nothing to play however a sense of relief after starving off the threat of relegation. In the short space of a season the club has turned around their financial status, and the playing group has achieved another night series win and the Belt up cup along with securing a top 3 finals place. We obviously have further ambitions in the top 4 finals series however for now our focus turns to this Rockingham clash and trying to achieve a top 2 finish. Rockingham have proved on a number of times this season that they are not just here in the NPL to make up the numbers and they have already achieved what would have been their first goal of not getting relegated. Our first encounter this season in the NPL against Rockingham proved to be a tight affair with a narrow 3-2 win to Athena. We were all ever so impressed with their facilities and hospitality and I think they are certainly not only holding their own in the NPL but also in these off the field criteria. NickAmbrogio, Jon Stynes and Phil Arnold all got on the score sheet that day however so did Millard and Harmer for Rocking- ham City so today we will be looking for our second clean sheet on the trot and tightening up our defence as we approach the top 4 finals series. Our last match out was also a close game last weekend against our rivals Stirling who were fighting for their lives to stay up. The game also provided a full senior first team debut to youngsters George Festa, Rob Harding and Sam Thorniley all under 19 years old. It was terrific to see these young players not only gain first team experience but also play such terrific games. SamThorni - ley was up and down at the back winning headers and tackles whilst George Festa along side Dennis Galan helped ensure we kept a clean sheet. Rob Harding was unlucky not to get on the score sheet making it 2 goals on the trot however he will get more opportunities I am sure today. Unfortunately over the past 3 weeks we have been hit severely with injuries and suspensions to the likes of Adrian Madashi, Chris Saldaris, Adam Falcone, Phil Arnold, Dennis Galan, Ryan Malton, Jack Andrews, Nick Ambrogio and season long injuries to Marco Santalucia and Jon Stynes. I think the group who have played the past 3 games have done ever so well considering the circumstances with a list of basically an entire first team squad out. Luckily we did have depth although its been seriously tested of late, it is great to see players slowly returning into the squad along with the youngsters who have stepped up and proven their worth. Our head physio Fred Vanin needs a lot of credit as he has really had his work cut out lately with all the injured players at training needed treatment and rehab. Our other support staff, Dr Emma Black, Ethan Burke, Jesse Deas and David Kist have also been an integral part to our team allowing both myself and the players to receive live and post match Heart Rate and GPS data, Video Analysis, Match Analytics and Opposition Analysis. Fred Vanin ensures the players continue to receive the latest Sports Science recovery and injury prevention methods whilst our team manager Jimmy Campbell supports in every possible way. Finally I would like to thank the Club, the sponsors, community and supporters for being part of this ter- rific journey and we hope to continue to excite all involved. This is only the beginning so watch this space as the club continues on this new journey to hopefully be the leaders in the league both on and off the field. It has also been so good to watch the 18’s and 20’s develop and progress this season. Well done Tim Cash, Kieran Davies and Kyle Finch for your efforts this season as well helping mould the future of Athena. We hope for a great game today and I would like to invite Cameron to share a bite to eat and drink with all the Rockingham FC players and staff after the game in the Clubhouse.
