Area and Population
The Barkly Shire covers an area of approximately 323,514km², stretching from the Queensland border to west of the Stuart Highway, and from north of Elliott to south of Barrow Creek. Approximately 7,531 people live within the region. The town of Tennant Creek, including the Urban Living Areas of Kargaru, Tinkarli, Wuppa, Marla Marla, Village Camp and Munji-Marla, Ngalpa Ngalpa, has the largest concentration of residents, followed by the open town of Elliott and its surrounding district and the major communities and outstations of Ampilatwatja, Urapuntja, Alpurrurulam, Ali Curung, Canteen Creek and Wutunugarra (Epenarra). In addition to these major populations, the Shire also consists of approximately eight minor communities the largest of which include Tara and Mungkarta, seventy family outstations, forty nine pastoral stations, mining operations and commercial properties.
Town, Community and Outstation Service Areas
Where services have been provided by local government bodies (Ali Curung, Ampilatwatja, Alpurrurulam, Urapuntja Outstations, Elliott and Tennant Creek) the responsibility for delivery of services will transfer to the Shire. These services include core local government services and other agency and commercial services which the Shire is funded to provide.
Shire services will be delivered from the Shire Headquarters and the following Service Delivery Centres.

The following two resource centres and one corporation will continue, post 1st July 2008, to be responsible for provision of the core local government services and other services to those major and minor communities and outstations for which they receive funding.

Pastoralists / Mining Enterprises / Commercial Enterprises and PBI outside of previously incorporated areas.
In addition to towns, communities and family outstations, the incorporation of the Barkly region will also include pastoral, mining, commercial and non-commercial properties. Local Government services received by these properties will be directed from the Shire Headquarters.
