In this newsletter: new offers, XK 120 Explored progress, and a tribute to . Roy Salvadori 12 May 1922 – 3 June 2012

Since the last Newsletter we have had the sad news that racing driver Roy Salvadori passed away on 3 June. In the larger scheme of things he is better-known for his drives for , especially his 1959 Le Mans win along with Carroll Shelby, while he also had a Formula 1 career, finishing fourth in the World Driver's Championship in 1958 with Cooper. But his Jaguar achievements were real, and early on in his career he drove his own XK 120 roadster, before moving on to drive other people's Jaguars.

This began when in 1959 Roy drove a 3.4 Jaguar saloon for fellow motor dealer John Coombs, this being followed later by some stirring drives in the Coombs 3.8 Mark 2 – which he once told me felt awful when it was properly set up, but was slower when it felt good! Meanwhile Roy drove the Coombs E-type BUY 1 in the E-type's début race at in March 1961, when he finished third after the new car's brakes wilted. But soon afterwards he won at the Crystal Palace, vanquishing Jack Sears who was driving the Oulton winning car (ECD 400). Roy continued to drive the Coombs E-type (now registered 4 WPD) in 1962, though Graham Hill was the car's main pilot, and his most notable achievement that year in Jaguar terms was a great fourth place at Le Mans, co- driving Briggs Cunningham in a works-prepared fixedhead E-type. This would be the best result ever achieved by an E-type at Le Mans.

When the lightweight E-type arrived in 1963, Roy again entered the fray although his Cunningham- entered car retired from Le Mans 1963 after co-driver Richards crashed it. Success came with the Mark 2 in 1963, however, when with Denny Hume he won the second Motor Six-Hour race at Brands Hatch in the CT Atkins-entered car (albeit after the leading car was disqualified for oversize inlet valves). Roy's final race in a Jaguar was in the Tommy Atkins lightweight E-type 86 PJ, when he finished fifth behind Graham Hill, Mike Salmon, Jack Sears and David Piper at a wet Silverstone.

The debonair figure of Roy Salvadori will be much missed and his contribution to Jaguar was unstinted and valuable. He will long be remembered, and with considerable fondness, by those who knew him.

Postscript: Carroll Shelby died only days before Roy, and while he had far less association with the Jaguar marque, he was an official importer of Listers in the late 1950s. But it was the Shelby-prepared Cobras that, along with the GTO, ensured that the Lightweight E-type won few races of consequence – before all such cars were out-dated by the new breed of mid-engined sports car.

Original Jaguar XK - The Restorer's Guide - JUST PUBLISHED! by Philip Porter

Not to be confused with Bernard Viart's XK 'Explored' series of books, which will eventually cover XK 120, 140 and 150 individually, this well- known volume covers all three types in one go. The first edition was soon followed by a second which did much to augment and refine the content, and Original XK has subsequently proved extremely useful to many enthusiasts the world over.

Now, a revised third edition has just been published which contains no less than three time the quantity of pages and quadruple the numbers of illustrations, the latter now totalling around 1,000. For those primarily interested in the XK 150, Original XK is currently the only major title available on restoring this particular variant (Bernard Viart's examination of the car is at least 18 months away). And, for those who can't wait for XK 120 Explored (see below) and/or our reprint of XK 140 Explored, it could be a life-saver! In any case, those seriously interested in restoring to original, or simply learning all there is to learn about the XK series, will appreciate that every book, from whatever author, will deliver something different and interesting.

Original XK is available from us right now at £60.00 (a saving of £5 on the list price) plus £10.00 P&P UK, £18.50 Europe (Signed for) £28 Rest Of World (signed for) http://www.paulskilleterbooks.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=132

Jaguar XK 120 - Anatomy of a Cult Object Volume 2

NOW AVAILABLE IN ENGLISH as well as German - buy both volumes at once and save money!

We are experiencing a high level of demand for this recently-published English language version of anatomy', and no wonder, because Urs Schmid has produced another masterpiece in terms of sheer detail and volume of authentic information. His books are illustrated with many hundreds of photographs taken of carefully-selected original, unrestored XK 120s, and in this respect alone The Anatomy of a Cult Object is unmatched. Just Volume 2 alone has some 1,200 illustrations, with only few less in Volume 1.

Volume 1 (also available from us in English) covers mainly the technical and mechanical features of the XK 120 in all three body styles, whereas in Volume 2 the author concentrates on the finer details of interior trim, engine compartment, boot, optional extras and factory literature (especially the documentation that accompanied cars when new). Colour finishes are examined in detail (including body colour schemes, colour swatches and paint mixing formulas). Production changes are described and illustrated, and overall, the two volumes published so far contribute uniquely to our knowledge of what these cars were like on the day they left Foleshill or Browns Lane.

As a final touch, the English language standard version is bound in the original Suede Green shade of Rexine as used for the XK120 interiors, this material coming from a special run of Rexine commissioned from the original suppliers in England.

Volume 2 comprises 320 pages, and the size is 9 x 11.75 inches (23 x 30cm). The cost is £156.00 (little more than the price of two tanks of fuel in a Jaguar!) plus shipping according to where it is delivered. More details and sample pages on our website. Vol 1 costs £140.00 plus shipping, but if you purchase both together the price is usefully cheaper at £267.49 plus the same shipping as for single volumes – £29.00 signed-for Europe delivery, £37.00 by air to all other countries. http://www.paulskilleterbooks.co.uk/

XK 120 EXPLORED – SOON TO BE AT THE PRINTERS!

Example jacket - may change!

XK owners are fortunate that various high-quality books are, or in this instance, soon will be, available to help them get the best from their cars. Following his sell-out first volume in this series, XK 140 Explored, Bernard has now completed XK 120 Explored which is at an advance stage of preparation ready for the printer. While proof-reading the book I have been ever more impressed by the level of detail contained in the unique drawings which Bernard is able to produce, which show virtually every component almost down to the last nut and bolt in full perspective. Just as vital, the drawings reference where each part goes on the car, and if you have never had to reconstruct a disassembled XK, you have no idea of exactly how vital this is. As I've remarked before, Bernard Viart's books could actually influence market prices, because it is now much more practical to restore or indeed assess an incomplete, unoriginal or disassembled car.

XK 120 Explored covers all three body types, and includes much detail on the aluminium-bodied open two-seaters and their wood frames, before moving on to the production steel-bodied roadsters (early and late types), then the fixedhead and drophead coupés.

As with XK 140 Explored, each model is dissected by means of some 2,500 individual drawings in some 400 plates, most in colour. Interior and exterior trim is included, and the wiring is portrayed in labelled,

colour-keyed form.

In addition, conventional chapters provide a full description of the car, including its production and competition career, profusely illustrated with superb period photographs and literature. Many of these illustrations will be unfamiliar even to the expert.

As before, the book will be of the highest quality as regards printing and paper (the latter is FSC approved, coming from known and sustainable sources), and will be available in standard and slip-cased leather bound form (the latter limited to 120 copies only). Prices will be in the region of £105.00 for the standard edition, and £150.00 for the special leather edition.

If you would like to be on our XK 120 Explored interest list then please contact us either by replying to this e-mail, or by using the Contact form on the web site. DELIVERIES ARE EXPECTED DURING OCTOBER 2012 – MAKE SURE YOU ARE ONE OF THE FIRST TO RECEIVE A COPY, AS XK 140 EXPLORED SOLD OUT QUICKLY! And yes - a revised reprint of XK 140 Explored is on its way and will also be available in the autumn. http://www.paulskilleterbooks.co.uk/contact_us.php GREAT BARGAIN OFFERS!

ALL ABOUT THE JAGUAR E-TYPE

... Latest News and Offers from Paul Skilleter/PJ Publishing - June 2012 Page 6 of 7

The E-type may have gone through its 50th anniversary year but interest in the car is as high as ever. This book draws on key articles by leading authorities (including Philip Porter, Jim Patten and Paul Skilleter) published since 1988 in Jaguar Quarterly, Jaguar World and Classic Jaguar World, including the much sought-after E-type Souvenir Issue of 1991 which, like many of these magazines, is no longer available. It also includes the full 10-part restoration series on the oldest E-type roadster in existence, 77 RW.

All About The Jaguar E-type is available in the standard softback edition priced at £29.00. This includes delivery in the UK and for 314 pages, mostly in colour, this represents a true bargain! It is still excellent value even with the additional £5.00 for European delivery (air).

components, paint and trim colours. All production changes are listed, either in the text or in tables alongside. As can be expected from Anders Clausager, the book is also strong on statistics, and as the information is presented in logical sequences, all the information is easy to access.

This large format, hardback book is listed at £30.00 but we are still selling it at only £24.00 plus P&P.

Remember that if you order it from the UK with any other PJ Publishing titles, it will effectively come P&P free, as we make only one P&P charge in the UK regardless of the numbers of books. Unfortunately we can't offer to do this for overseas orders.

Available from us at a competitive £95.

Order from: http://www.paulskilleterbooks.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=110 ECURIE ECOSSE We have experienced a big upturn in orders for this great book by Eric Dymock on David Murray and the sports car team he founded in the 1950s. Ecurie Ecosse progressed from XK 120s to C-types, finally winning Le Mans in 1956 and 1957 with the D-type. But note that stocks are now getting low and it is unlikely that we will be able to offer this book for more than a few weeks.

We do have a few of the special leather-bound, slip-cased editions left, which are priced at £150.00. These too will, we expect, be all gone during this year.
