Central Local Health Network

The Central Adelaide Local Health Network (CALHN) is an incorporated that provides acute and community services to central metropolitan Adelaide and tertiary services to a wider catchment area.

Hospitals and services within the CALHN include the Royal Adelaide Hospital, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Hampstead Rehabilitation Centre, St Margaret’s Rehabilitation Hospital, a range of sub-acute and primary services and a number of state-wide services.

Royal Adelaide Hospital

Established in 1837

650 bed tertiary referral centre and of the Universities of Adelaide and .

188 bed rehabilitation facility and regional geriatric service at Hampstead Centre.

The hospital admits adult emergency and elective patients into a wide range of specialist units. It offers a major trauma service and an intrastate, interstate and overseas retrieval service.

Location: North Terrace, within the central business district of Adelaide, South Australia. The hospital is adjacent to the Botanic Gardens and the Eastern Parklands.

Surroundings: Universities of Adelaide and South Australia, Art Gallery of South Australia, the Museum and Adelaide Zoo.

Public – A1-I2 The Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) is a major teaching hospital of the Universities of Adelaide and South Australia.

It offers postgraduate education programs in a wide range of specialties including general practice training.

The hospital is strongly committed to supporting junior staff and their training needs. The Director of Clinical Training is responsible for supervising the training of interns at RAH.

The Director of Clinical Training, the Medical Education Officers and the Director of Medical Administration comprise a team supporting intern’s professional development, careers counselling, continuing education and personal welfare.

The Hospital community includes an active Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Society, with a Medical Officer’s lounge and facilities.

A gymnasium is available on campus for staff with a wide range of social activities organised from the campus.

Short term accommodation is available on the RAH campus. Quality real estate and rental accommodation are also available. A child care facility is available on site and as well as car parking.

Public – A1-I2 The Queen Elizabeth Hospital

Established in 1954

360 bed acute referral hospital, providing acute and elective surgery, acute and chronic general medicine and a range of sub- specialty areas.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (TQEH) is affiliated with the , Professional Chairs in Cardiology, Medicine, Surgery and General Medicine.

The hospital is a centre of excellence for the provision of services for the older person. TQEH plays a key role in South Australia’s medical education, training and research.

The hospital is undergoing an extensive redevelopment program. Completed components of the redevelopment include:

• 200 bed inpatient facility • Multi storey staff car park • Three storey contemporary state-of-the-art research facility

Location: Woodville Road, Woodville, South Australia.

Surroundings: Woodville Primary School.

A five day orientation program precedes the intern year and attendance is compulsory.

The intern roster comprises five rotations. Each rotation is 10-11 weeks in duration. Rotations are balanced, to satisfy the Medical Board of Australia’s requirements for core terms in:

• Medicine, Surgery and Emergency Medicine

This also includes non-core terms for individual intern’s interest.

Interns can choose from a range of core and non-core rotations including:

• Medicine – exposure to aged care, cardiology, neurology, respiratory, palliative care, general medicine and AMU. • Surgery – General surgery, colorectal surgery, upper GI, urology, plastic surgery & orthopaedic surgery. • Emergency Medicine – undertaken at TQEH. • Non-core terms – psychiatry, relieving & Medical and Surgical nights. • Rotations to WCHN – Paediatric Emergency, Neonatology, Respiratory and General Medicine.

The Director of Clinical Training (DCT) and the Medical Education Officer (MEO) are responsible for overseeing intern training and coordinating early postgraduate training.

The DCT and MEO are available for career advice and counselling for individual issues or concerns. Assessments are carried out mid- term and end of term at each rotation.
