Dear Parents/Carers

Today your son/daughter has had an assembly to introduce them to Work Experience. Although many schools no longer give their students an opportunity to embark on work experience, at our Academy we believe that this is an important and valuable experience and something that we want our Year 10 students to be involved in.

This booklet aims to provide support and advice for both students and parents to explain the process of work experience and how students may come about making a decision for what they wish to do during this time.

All Year 10 students will be expected to attend Work Experience for 1 week, from Monday 27th to Friday 1st July 2016.

What is Work Experience and why should I do it?

A work placement is your opportunity to spend a period of time outside the classroom, learning about a particular job or area of work. Work Experience can help you decide on your options for after Year 11 and beyond. You will also get the chance to develop and show evidence of vital skills such as self-confidence, communication, independence and a variety of others, depending on what kind placement you do.

What type of Work Experience can I do?

There are no restrictions where you can go to complete your Work Experience, although a risk assessment will be completed to ensure it is safe for you to attend.

Most of you will be expected to find your own placements. This gives you the opportunity to find a work placement that suits your own interests. There is a guide below that will help you decide what might be a good placement for you.

At the back of this booklet is a list of all the placements that other students have used in previous years to help give you an idea on what types of placements are available within the local area.

How should I decide what to do?

1. You could pick something that is related to your favourite subject, for example:

 English: Libraries, Teacher, Solicitors, Advertising, TV & Film, radio  Maths: Banking, Accountancy & finance, Engineering, Meteorology  Geography: Environmental services, Development organisations, Charities, Politics

2. You could choose a career that you are interested in, for example:

 Working with children: a primary school or a nursery  Sport: working in a sports centre, PE Teacher, sports coach  Health & Social care: hospital, physiotherapy, care home  Engineering: Cummins, motor mechanic.

There are also a few other things you need to consider when deciding choosing a placement for work experience:

 How will I get there? It is you responsibility to organise your transport to and from your placement, so it needs to be somewhere that you are able to get to on a daily basis.  What are the working hours? These may be longer or different from the normal Academy day.  Do you want to work inside or outside?  You want to be doing something hands on and practical based or would you prefer to work in an office

How do I find a placement?

Once you have decided what you would like to do you will need to search for somewhere that will offer you the experience you desire. There are a number of things you can do to find potential placements:

1. Use the directory of previously used companies in the back of this booklet. This is a good place to start as it allows you to see what opportunities there are available to you locally. 2. Ask family and friends as they might know of local businesses that will offer an experience linked to your interests. 3. Use of the internet or local phone book to find relevant business in the local area. For example

Important checklist to secure your Work Experience placement

What needs to be done? Date completed? 1 Decide on what type of placement you would like 2 Find 5 different options for this placement 3 You will need to contact each of the 5 placement options by phone, email or letter 4 Hopefully you will have more than one option available to you and you will need to decide on your first choice 5 The work placement needs to complete a form to agree to the placement at this needs to be handed in to Mrs Webster in the main office. 6 Notify all other placement options that you have secured a placement elsewhere but thank them for their offer.

The deadline for all students securing a work experience placement and returning the form to the Academy is 3.30pm on Friday 15th January 2016.

Other important information you may need to tell them or ask them about:  The dates of my work experience are 27th June to 1st July 2016.  You contact details in case they need to check with someone and call you back  You will need to tell them about the form that they need to complete to agree to the placement  Who is the best person for me to contact to discuss this further?
