We have enjoyed skating at the arena in gym this semester and we will also be skating next semester. Can you please explain the need for safety on the ice? Helmets are required to skate if it is a school activity. Cages on helmets should be worn if students are playing hockey. All students are expected to participate but if they choose not to they can work on an assignment.

Niall Weyer (2nd place) We are playing intramurals at lunch on Tuesday,

Wednesday, and Thursdays. Right now it is soccer but after Christmas we will be playing volleyball, basketball and badminton.

There is boys basketball after school on Tuesday and Thursday and they are looking for players. We are also looking for parents that are willing to coach a team now or in the future. If you are

CONNECTIONS

North Island Secondary School has been hosting Trades Days sponsored through a grant from the ITA Industry Training Authority in conjunction with our Connections program at NISS.

Grade 4-7 students from AJ Elliott in Sointula came to NISS to participate in a Plumbing Trades Workshop with high school students grades 10-12. Students were exposed to the plumbing trade and worked hands on soldering copper pipe then tested it with pressure, created a pvc channel that allowed water to flow up hill, and worked with pex plumbing pipe and crimp rings to create a pressure tested square. Grade 7 students from Sunset elementary participated in an automotive workshop with Vjeko from V-Echo Restorations in attendance as a presenter. Students then conducted hands on practice with breaking bolts under pressure and reviewing the workings of motors. NISS and Connections is looking forward to hosting 4 more Trades afternoons with Alert Bay students and Sunset students in grades 5 and 6.

Another great trades afternoon at NISS with grade 6 students in attendance from Sunset elementary and grades 10-12 NISS students helping. Grade 6 students spent the afternoon cutting, punching, bending, pounding, welding, torching, and filing metal face masks. This was the third in our series of six trades afternoons at NISS.
