Q4 2019, Asset Management Overview – Asia

MARKET OVERVIEW

2019

In what has been a turbulent year, whether it be the backdrop of the US-China trade war, prolonged protests in Hong Kong, ongoing regulatory change across the region, or the persistent fears of recession, hiring in Asia has been relatively buoyant. Although there has been less activity in business development, particularly amongst traditional asset managers, various firms have hired for specialist roles targeting specific client segments (insurance) or alternative products and client servicing has remained active. On the investment side, Public Equities and Fixed Income have been active, notably in research roles covering China or the Consumer/TMT sectors as has Alternatives, particularly in illiquid strategies, with new entrants and growth in existing teams.

YEAR END OVERVIEW

A look at some of the hiring patterns among key areas over the past year. Data sourced from hires reported by Sheffield Haworth in previous newsletters and does not represent all hiring in 2019.

SALES AND DISTRIBUTION HIRES

Most of the hiring in 2019 has been at the country specific or sub-regional level, consistent with the ongoing theme of specialisation and responding to a more sophisticated set of needs from clients. South Korea and China continue to be a focus for many asset managers.

heightened concerns going into the second half of the year and a noticeable drop off in Hong Kong as firms paused hiring plans in the uncertainty surrounding the protests. The graph below illustrates hiring patterns throughout the year against 2018.

LEADERSHIP

Leadership hiring has remained an active area in 2019 albeit at a more muted level compared to 2018. Hires have included both regional and country ‘Heads’. Legg Mason, M&G Investments, Eastspring Investments and UBS Asset Management are some of the notable firms to have replaced their regional heads. In comparison to 2018, none of the reported hires came from an external sales team, rather from existing leadership positions either internally or externally. This tallies with previous commentary in these newsletters on the theme of asset managers increasing their infrastructure in the region outside of distribution with a need for individuals who have experience tying multiple business lines together.

Various country head hires were made in Heads of Asia Hires 2019 by 2019. Examples such as BNP Paribas AM Background hiring a new head of Taiwan and Japan respectively, Franklin Templeton promoting a new Head of Singapore and MSIM 3 3 appointing a Head of Korea. These types of hires will likely continue into 2020 as asset managers deepen their coverage and target specific, strategic markets more 2 directly. It will also have the added benefit of providing a deeper bench of senior 4 management talent when firms will inevitably need to think about succession 4 planning and the continued ‘localisation’ of their staff in the region.

Business development hiring was much lower, but so was the number of new PFM licences awarded which drove much of the activity in the Investment Sales Leadership Other previous year.
