The legislative session began on Wednesday, January 4th. JOURNAL OF THE SENATE Wednesday, January 9, 2019 On Wednesday after the first Monday of January, A. D., 2019 the date by the Constitution of the State of Connecticut for the meeting of the General Assembly, the Senate convened in the Senate Chamber in the Capitol in Hartford at 10:08 a.m. The Senate was called to order by the Secretary of State, Denise Merrill. The prayer was offered by the Deputy Chaplain, Rabbi Philip Lazowski of Bloomfield, Connecticut. The following is the prayer: Proverbs 15:22, “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisors, they succeed.” Let us pray: Sovereign of the universe, grant me the capacity to welcome and bless the newly elected Lieutenant Governor, Susan Bysiewicz, the newly-elected Senators and the returning Senators, both Democrat and Republican. Grant them wisdom, courage and integrity. Guide them to work together and help them to draw upon the noblest impulses of the heart, that we may be worthy of the American dream, to promote prosperity and goodness in our State and across our great Nation. As we pray for blessing in the New Year, I beseech thee, O God, please give the Senators the insight and fortitude to protect us from the many dangers that confront this State and the United States of America. Teach them to serve with humility and commitment to seek the best in each other, in common bonds of true humanity and civic duty. May this country continue to be a beacon of Democracy and optimism to the entire world. The Connecticut General Assembly January 18, 2013 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE BIPARTISAN TASK FORCE ON GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION AND CHILDREN’S SAFETY SCHEDULES HEARINGS Subgroup members named A special bipartisan task force recently announced by legislative leaders and charged with developing recommendations designed to reduce gun violence, enhance school safety and increase access to mental health care has scheduled a series of public hearings. There will be a public hearing focusing on school safety on January 25 at 9:30 a.m., a gun safety hearing on January 28 at 10:00 a.m., and a hearing on mental health issues January 29 at 10:00 a.m., all in room 2C at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford. A fourth public hearing will be held by the task force at Newtown High School on January 30 at 6:00 p.m. Appointments to three subgroups within the task force were also announced by Speaker of the House Brendan Sharkey (D-Hamden), House Republican Leader Larry Cafero (R- Norwalk), Senate President Donald E. The program, Connecticut Health Care: Strengthening our Communities through Food System Action, covered a wide range of topics, including how hospitals and other healthcare organizations can devote community benefit resources to improve access to healthy foods and support the local food system. Participants also discussed the role of healthcare purchasing to support farmers and fishermen, how investing in local foods improves economic security and community health, and how communityhospital partnerships can address food insecurity. In her introductory remarks, Liz Beaudin, RN, PhD, Senior Director, Population Health, CHA, talked briefly about the hospital association’s focus on social determinants of health, noting that access to healthy food is essential to having a healthy population. “This is a great way to look at one of the foundational ways we can improve health,” Dr. Beaudin said. Program speakers noted that those without access to fresh food are more likely to suffer from poor health.
