www.guardianonline.co.nz Saturday, September 28, 2019 Ashburton Guardian 3 ‘We need to fix this now’

By Susan Sandys [email protected] Ashburton youth despairing of an uncertain future in the face of climate change joined thousands of their fellow students in strike action nationwide yesterday. Shortly after protesters poured into Par- liament grounds at midday, about 35 Ash- burton College students marched with plac- ards from their school grounds, through the Ashburton Domain. They met with about 20 pupils from Ash- burton Borough School, lining the footpath along State Highway One at Baring Square West, getting supportive toots from passing motorists, before taking their protest to out- side the Ashburton District Council build- ing. “You will die of old age, we will die of cli- mate change,” they chanted. College pupils Paulina Cuadrado, 13, Chrissea Cheesman, 13, Janelle Galos, 14, Mao Nishioka, 13, and Laura Cameron, 13, took their protest inside the building. They were received politely by reception staff as they asked to talk to councillors. They were told none were in the building, so they left to re-join the other protesters outside. The five were among those leading the protest, which had its origins in a Year 9 in- novation class project, taught by Shelly Rob- son who also marched. They were joined not only by classmates, but other students from the college up to Year 13. Students participating had the support of the college, but had to get permission slips from their parents, and they missed about 20 minutes of classes. “Our world is down on its knees for help because we are just ruining it,” Paulina said, referring to the burning of fossil fuels and Ashburton College pupils (from left) deforestation. Whether you’re a renter or a homeowner, everyone pays rates.

If you rent a house worth $250,000, $175 of your rent each month goes to the Council, so it’s in everyone’s interests that we keep a lid on rates.

We’ve seen massive cost blow-outs on Council projects. The Art Gallery and Museum cost 40% more than was budgeted. If we see a similar blow-out on the Library and Civic Centre, ratepayers are looking at an additional $20 million bill. That’s $1,650 for every household in the district.

I’ve been a local accountant for more than forty years, working with Ashburton businesses and community groups to keep costs down and prevent multi- million dollar disasters. I’ll bring that experience to Council.

■■DANCE CHAMPS LDA champs a sell-out success

By Susan Sandys [email protected] Ashburton’s first-ever schools’ dance cham- pionships was a sell-out success at the Ash- burton Trust Event Centre on Tuesday night. Teams of dancers from Ashburton area primary and intermediate schools present- ed items at the 2019 Mid Canterbury Dance Champs after being tutored by Life Dance Academy (LDA). LDA teachers Anna Raukawa and Madi Wilson came up with the idea for the cham- pionships as they wanted to provide an op- portunity for Year 1 to Year 8 children to have fun through the medium of dance. The school runs under a charitable trust and was set up about four years ago with the mission to provide affordable lessons. It is based at Tinwald and teaches a range of genres, including fusion dance, jazz, ballet, lyrical and hip hop. Raukawa’s and Wilson’s dream turned into reality on Tuesday night, as the sell- out crowd was in awe of the choreography, co-ordination and charisma of teams as they presented items to a range of pop songs. Audience members even got to join in, and at the end of the show following prizes being presented, Wilson led the house in the song Allenton School Mega Dance Crew was among teams at the 2019 Mid Canterbury Dance Champs. For them, the October school hol- idays are the peak of the representa- tive season, and the first team set to hit the turf will be the Mid Canter- bury under-15 girls. They’re off to Nelson for one of four national under-15 tourna- ments taking place around the country, which will run from Mon- day through until Saturday. Next week it’s the turn of the rest of the teams – Mid Canterbury’s under-13 A and B teams, with the A teams off to the national Collier Trophy (girls) and Hatch Cup (boys) tournaments, and the Bs off to the Festival of Hockey in Oamaru. Mid Canterbury has both a boys’ and a girls’ team off to Oamaru, and the boys will play from Fri- day through until Sunday, with the girls on the turf from Monday to Wednesday.
