At that time, it covered a much larger area than it does today. In 1819 and 1820, large County offices will be closed on the following holidays: portions of the county were removed to form the counties of Oakland, Holiday To be observed on Lapeer, Genesee and SI. Clair. New Year's Day Wednesday, January 1, 2003 The first Europeans arrived in the area during the 17'h century. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Monday, January 20, 2003 They included French fur trappers who recognized the richness of the President's Day Monday, February 17, 2003 marshes and sought new opportunities for trade. Moravian missionaries Good Friday Y2 day, Friday, April 18, 2003 established the first organized, non-native settlement in the county in 1782 Memorial Day Monday, May 26, 2003 as a refuge for Christianized Indians driven out of Ohio. They built along the Independence Day Friday, July 4, 2003 banks of the Clinton River, then known as the Huron River, but were forced Labor Day Monday, September 1, 2003 to leave four years later by the Chippewa Indians. In the late 1790s, Columbus Day Monday, October 13, 2003 Christian Clemens visited the area, and in March 1800, purchased a Veterans' Day Tuesday, November 11, 2003 distillery considered the first building on the site of the future Mount Thanksgiving Day Thursday, November 27, 2003 Clemens. The next year he purchased 500 acres for development. This Day AFTER Thanksgiving Day Friday, November 28, 2003 site, known as High Banks, was platted as the Village of Mount Clemens in Christmas Eve Wednesday, December 24, 2003 1818, when it was proclaimed the Macomb County Seat. Christmas Day Thursday, December 25, 2003 In the early 1800s, and at least by 1840, settlers moved into the New Year's Eve Wednesday, December 31, 2003 interior of the county, carving out farms from the hardwood forests. The roots of the county villages and townships were established by this time. In ELECTION DATES addition to the original French and English, later settlers included Germans, Village General. Between 1920 and 1930, Macomb County doubled in popUlation, LABOR UNIONS REPRESENTING MACOMB COUNTY EMPLOYEES rising from 38,103 to 77,146 persons. Two significant developments AFSCME Local 411 spurred this growth - the establishment of Selfridge Field in 1917, and the Building Trades Association beginning of the urbanization movement northward from the City of Detroit. International Union of Operating Engineers Local 547 During the 1940s and the 1950s the movement from the central city to the Macomb County Environmental Health Association suburbs increased. The largest growth occurred between 1950 and 1970, Macomb County Professional Deputy Sheriff Association when over 440,000 people were added to the County's population. Michigan Association of Public Employees Today, Macomb County encompasses 482 square miles, and ranks Michigan Nurses Association third in population in the state, with a 2000 census total of 788,149 persons. Police Officers Association of Michigan The county is recognized as a leader in business and industry, and Service Employees International Union designated as a "Community of Economic Excellence" by the State of Teamsters Local 214 Michigan. The Macomb County Board of Commissioners is the legislative, administrative and policy-making body of Macomb County government.
