3 In recent months I suspect many of us have at moments felt vulnerable, isolated and frightened. I sincerely hope that a great many of you also felt that your greatest source of comfort, reassurance and strength at that moment was God. Why, we may ask, does it take a global crisis, or a personal tragedy or a withdrawal of one’s personal freedom, before we pay serious attention to what gives our lives their strength and stability? Clearly our families are hugely important to us, they are often our first port of call during a crisis, but what happens when families cannot gather together or when there has been an estrangement or those key family members have died? WhatVicar’s then? ThenLetter perhaps we turn to God. And what do we discover? We find that God has been patiently waiting for us to speak his name, or perhaps more dramatically that God has Mark’s Letter been proactive and has been carrying us for a surprisingly long time. So often we only recognise God’s activity within our lives and the supportive structure that God gives to our lives, in hindsight. We look back over our lives and see God’s unmistakable care for us at every step but still we lack the faith to trust that this care is ongoing and will last throughout our lives. We attribute to God our own unreliability. We place limits on God’s capacity to love us and comfort us. Joseph Scriven puts it beautifully:
