2018 UC DAVIS FOOTBALL GAMEDAY 3 HEAD COACH DAN HAWKINS

Head Coach DAN HAWKINS He has taken his family on vacation to Machu Picchu in Peru. He taught science, jumped out of airplanes, and coached football in 13 different countries. For Dan Hawkins, who was introduced on November 28, 2016, those aren’t simply items to cross off a bucket list, they have been opportunities to learn. It’s that thirst for learning, and application of that knowledge, that brought Hawkins, a 1984 UC Davis alumnus who played and coached with legendary head coach Jim Sochor, back to his alma mater. By incorporating the program’s core principles of uncommon engineering, quality balance of life and excellence with class, the Aggies thrived both on and off the field, and built the foundation for the program’s #AGScension. During Hawkins’ first year at UC Davis, his team set 46 new Big Sky era records, faced more ranked teams (or teams receiving votes) since joining the league, won five games against Division I competition— equal to the combined total from the previous three sea- sons, — and collected five Big Sky Player of the Week awards, matching the total from the last four years combined. For the first time in program history, UC Davis also ended the season as the league’s No. 1 offense. Under Hawkins’ tutelage, the Aggies earned 10 All-Big Sky awards, including two of the league’s top honors: wide receiver Keelan Doss was named offensive player of the year and quarterback Jake Maier was named the conference’s newcomer of the year. In addition to its on-field success, UC Davis football posted the highest APR — a team-based metric that holds institutions accountable for the academic progress of their student-athletes — of any Big Sky program for the fifth straight year when the NCAA re- leased its annual report. Football student-athletes also enjoy a unique opportunity as part of Hawkins’ program, one rarely presented by any program, at any level across the nation. By shifting his off-season workouts to the winter quarter, student-athletes are now able to study abroad, participate in an internship, volunteer or organize community service projects during the spring quarter and summer months. By enabling his players to enjoy the same opportunities provided to the student body, Hawkins has successfully created a culture focused on providing a well-rounded college experience at the sixth-ranked public school in the nation, while competing at the highest level of college athletics. Hawkins, who also served as a studio analyst at ESPN in recent seasons, brings a unique depth of experience and innovative offensive approach back to his alma mater. During his career, Hawkins built Boise State to elite status on the college football landscape and coached in the Big XII at the University of Colorado.

HEAD COACH DAN HAWKINS

HAWKINS, continued from page 4 “We are very excited to welcome Dan Hawkins back to UC Davis to lead an exciting new era of football at his alma mater. Dan is a highly experienced head football coach who possesses in-depth expertise about what it takes to be successful in the modern era of Division I college football,” said Blue. “Dan demonstrates an uncommon in- tellectual curiosity and shares our earnest commitment to the scholar-athlete ideal. His understanding of our successful football history, combined with his knowledge and experience in contemporary college football, makes him the ideal coach to move our program forward,” Blue added. Hawkins, the 17th head coach in the program’s history, is married to the former Misti Rae Ann Hokanson.

HAWKINS AT A GLANCE • Member of the 1982 football team that advanced to the NCAA Division II Championship after winning the 12th of 20 consecutive conference titles • First-generation college student • Served as an assistant coach for his mentor, Jim Sochor, from 1983-85 • Graduated from UC Davis in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education • Earned a master’s degree in educational administration from Saint Mary’s (Calif.) The Bearcats went 39-12-1 in his five seasons, with two 5-0 conference seasons, plus a 13-1 overall record and NAIA runner-up finish in 1997. • Transformed Boise State from a “school with the blue football turf” into a perennial na- tional power as its head coach from 2001-05. The Broncos posted a 56-11 overall record, which included a 37-3 record and 31-game win streak in the Western Athletic Conference Boise State led the country in scoring (45.6) and total offense (501.5) in 2002 • Coached 20 All-WAC first-team selections, three All-Americans, and 10 future NFL players while at Boise State. 2018 UC DAVIS FOOTBALL GAMEDAY 33 Greetings and welcome to Aggie Stadium! It is our pleasure to have you join us for the 2018 season of Aggie Football and another great year for our storied program. Head Coach Dan Hawkins, the staff, and our team have been preparing tire- lessly for this season to continue the momentum from 2017. A collection of experience and new-talent will lead the way for our program this year, and we are excited to see where their preparation will take them.

The purpose of this letter is to thank the growing number indi- viduals and businesses that support our programs with annual donations, who we refer to as Team Aggie Members. Your generous financial support allows continue our upward trajectory as we strive for success in modern college athletics. We are very encouraged about the future of UC Davis Athletics, and, thanks to your sup- port, there is a sense on campus and in the community that our athletics program is moving in a very positive direction.

We have made several enhancements to our Team Aggie structure in the last cou- ple of years. Most notably, all UC Davis Athletics donors are now included under the Team Aggie umbrella, whether gifts are made to the Team Aggie Athletics Fund or directly to any of our sports programs. All donors will receive member benefits accordingly. Additionally, all gifts made directly to individual sport programs will continue to fully and directly benefit those programs, without exception. We be- lieve these enhancements will help you and all of our supporters engage with UC Davis Athletics in a manner that meets your personal preferences and gives you a more transparent understanding of how your support helps our teams and athletics program.

The following pages list the donors who have given to UC Davis Athletics so far this year. On behalf of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff, I want to extend a sincere thanks to you for your financial support of UC Davis Athletics. The future success of our athletics program will largely be shaped by the continued contri- butions of donors like you. We are working hard every day to make you proud to support the Aggies.

GO AGS!

Kevin Blue Director of Athletics

2017 UC DAVIS FOOTBALL GAMEDAY 41 ABOUT AGGIE STADIUM

With an official capacity of 10,743, Aggie Stadium opened in 2007 as one of the three major facilities funded by the Facilities and Campus Enhancement, for F.A.C.E., Initiative of 1999. The UC Davis women’s lacrosse team was the first to compete on its Shaw Sports (formerly Sportexe) turf, defeating Saint Mary’s on April 1, 2007. The football team began competing at Aggie Stadium that fall, after more than a half century of competing at Toomey Field. The field hockey team also played at Aggie Stadium before moving to its own facility in 2014. Aggie Stadium was designed by industry leader Ellerbe Beckett, and built by local firm Brown Construction. It features fixed seating on each of the east and west sides, with grass berm seating – now known as the UC Davis Children’s Hospital Family Zone – adjacent to each end zones. Beneath the press box resides the Bruce Edwards Club Room, a popular venue for receptions, meetings and other gatherings. An upgraded high-resolution video board was added to replace the old standard-def board in 2017.
