NICHOLS’ NOTES

Bay Village is entering the last quarter of 2020. As I have heard some of you say it has been quite the year, nothing has compared to it in decades. Bay Village has been very fortunate to have weathered the pandemic well. Yes we had our ght with the virus back in July, August and early September but that was when the entire state of Florida was leading the country with cases and had become a hotspot. The residents and employees have done a very good job with keeping the Bay Village virus at bay. As a campus we will need to continue to be Eric Nichols...... President/CEO diligent in wearing our masks, social distancing, and Jennifer Grimes...... Chief Operating Officer handwashing as we enter the u season. Until a vaccine is Christina Wizba...... Chief Financial Officer produced for Covid-19, the new normal will be operations as Ron Simon...... Fall Crafting Fall is such a fun time to craft. Pumpkins, leaves, gourds and more. We have several opportunities for you to do some crafting.

• We have boxes full of styrofoam pumpkins in the Resident Services O ce and we want to give them to any resident who will decorate them. Markers, paint, glitter, fabric, and yarn are just a few of the supplies available in the craft room to jazz up these pumpkins. You can come use these supplies anytime or come during our open craft time to have sta available to assist you. If we can get at least 5 residents on each oor to decorate a pumpkin and put it in the core area for decoration, we will pick a winner for each oor. Please join in the fun!

• Wednesday October 14th at 2:00 you can make a wooden fall decoration for your door, wall or to set on a table. We will oer a free class with all supplies provided. Sign up in the Activity Book.

We are so fortunate to have a large well-supplied craft room at Bay Village. Residents are welcome to use this room anytime to work on their projects as long as there is not a class going on. But we have also decided to start having open craft time in the craft room. Residents will have access to all of our supplies free of charge. There will also be a sta member available to assist you. This would be a great time to decorate your pumpkin for the contest, or to work on a craft you have always wanted to try but didn’t want to buy all of the supplies. We have the usual craft supplies such as glitter, ribbon, and sequence, but we also have supplies for making cards, simple jewelry, alcohol inks and more. The times will be Mondays from 2:00-3:00 and Thursdays from 10:00-11:00. Anyone is welcome, but if we start getting too many people at one time we will have to start a sign-up sheet in the activity book.

And nally we want to get the sta in on the crafting! We will also be giving pumpkins to sta who want to decorate them. There will be a table in the Main Elevator Lobby the last week of October so residents can vote on their favorites.

FLiCRA News Thanks to all the residents of Bay Village who sent more than 1500 letters and emails to Senators Scott and Rubio, Congressmen Gaetz and Buchanan, as well as to the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services during January and February this year. You successfully helped to defeat the proposal which would have repealed Bay Village’s current exemption from paying a tax on its skilled nursing home beds. Bay Village and ALL its residents could have faced between $400,000 and $1 million in new state taxes annually if the proposal had passed. The members of the Bay Village FLiCRA Board appreciate the enthusiastic and e ectie response by 98% of the residents. 3

Special Days in October October 2nd is World Smile Day. This day is in honor of Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts who created the smiley face in 1963. That image went on to become the most recognizable symbol of good will and good cheer on the planet. As the years passed Harvey Ball became concerned about the over-commercialization of his symbol, and how its original meaning and intent had become lost in the constant repetition of the marketplace. Out of that concern came his idea for World Smile Day®. He thought that we, all of us, should devote one day each year to smiles and kind acts throughout the world. The smiley face knows no politics, no geography and no religion. Harvey’s idea was that for at least one day each year, neither should we. He declared that the rst Friday in October each year would henceforth be World Smile Day®. Bay Village sta will be oering special treats and perhaps a joke or two to help all of our residents smile. October 8th we will be celebrating Oktoberfest in the Main Elevator Lobby as well as in the Dining Room. From 4:00 -5:00 sta will be handing out authentic German pretzels and beer “to go”. There will be music and festive decorations to set the mood. The dining room will be serving a traditional German meal that day as well. October 22nd is National Color Day. Have you ever wondered what your favorite color says about you? Do the colors in your apartment set a relaxing mood? We will have a display set up in the Main Elevator Lobby with this information and more. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Bay Village sta and residents are encouraged to wear pink on October 23rd to acknowledge this. October 23rd there will also be a Fitness Challenge which you can read more about in Petra’s article. And nally we have Halloween. But most of our celebrating will occur on Friday October 30th. Sta and residents are encouraged to dress-up that day, even if it is just a silly hat. We will post pictures on Touchtown so that everyone can enjoy the fun. ...and in other news...... Alice Blueglass will be back leading the How Babe & Bennie Baptist would like to Novel Book Group. Happy Halloween The tradition of Halloween originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bon res and wear costumes to ward o ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints. Soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating treats. Most of the time we think of Halloween as a time for children, but it is becoming more and more popular for adults to celebrate as well. Last year Americans spent nearly $9 billion on Halloween. About 50% of adults wear costumes and 22 million Americans dress up their pets! Now more than ever we all can use a little fun and even silliness, so why not decorate a pumpkin or wear a goofy hat this Halloween. Calendar of Events

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER Rev. Dr. Chuck Mo ett Like so many of you, I search diligently for rest in the world of today. Every morning my searching is guided by the daily reection o ered from the soul of Richard Rohr, a Franciscan Priest. I share with you this day my edited version of one of his recent meditations: --Every day, more and more people are facing the catastrophe of extreme weather. --The neurotic news cycles incite hatred, sow discord, and amplify the daily chaos. --The pandemic that seems to be returning in waves, continues to wreak su ering and disorder with no end in sight. --There is no guarantee of the future in an economy designed to protect the rich and powerful at the expense of the poor and those subsisting at the margins of society. It’s no wonder the mental and emotional health among a large portion of the American population is in tangible decline. We have abandoned any sense of truth. As the poet W.B. Yeats wrote:“Turning and turning in the widening gyre The falcon cannot hear the falconer.”

God cannot abide with us in a place of fear. God cannot abide with us a place of ill will or hatred. God cannot abide with us inside a nonstop volley of claim and counterclaim. God cannot speak inside of so much angry noise and conscious deceit. God cannot be found when all sides are so far from “the Falconer.” God cannot be born except in a womb of Love. So o er God that womb.

If you will allow me, says Richard Rohr, I recommend for your spiritual practice for the next four months that you impose a moratorium on how much news you are subject to. It will only tear you apart, and away from Divine Truth. Instead, use this time for mystical reading from the masters, and prayer.

“You have much to gain now, and nothing to lose. Nothing at all. And the world – with you as a stable center – has nothing to lose. And everything to gain.” - Richard Rohr, September 19, 2020
