7 Resources

Information resources The Library contains books, journals, videos, DVDs, CDs, newspapers and prospectuses. To search for Library resources, use the Library Catalogue at www.aucb.ac.uk/library

The Library Online New students are given information in their first year on accessing the Library Online resources which include databases, e-books, online journals, images, sound and moving images. The Library has an excellent range of general and subject specific online resources which are accessible remotely. For full details, see our web pages at www.aucb.ac.uk/eresources.

8 Subject Librarians Your course will have its own Subject Librarian whose main responsibilities are to: • Liaise with your course team to ensure the Library’s books, journals and other services are developed to support the learning, teaching and research requirements of your subject area. • Hold teaching sessions, run workshops and offer tutorials to facilitate your use of Library resources and the gathering of information to support your studies. • Attend Course Board meetings where your Student Representatives can feedback Library related issues

9 Inter-library loans Books and photocopies of articles from journals not held in the Library may be requested by students studying for their second or final year BA/FdA or MA. First year students must get a form signed by their tutor before they can request inter-library loans. There is currently a £1 charge for this service. There is an additional charge for renewing books that come from the British Library. Before requesting an inter-library loan, please:

• Check with Library staff that there is nothing in stock which will provide the information you are requesting • Let staff know what time limit you are working to: inter-library loans may take 2 to 3 weeks, depending where they come from and whether they are in demand • Return the books promptly. As the service is based on trust and reputation, additional charges are made if items are returned late or lost.

Self Service Terminal The terminal can be used to issue and return books. If required, receipts can be printed or sent to your AUCB email address indicating issue and return dates. If you have any outstanding fines on your account you will be directed to the LIbrary counter before you can use the terminal.

10 Resource Guides Resource Guides for courses are kept in the Library and can provide a starting point for your research. Including a guide to the relevant areas of the Library, journals and online resources.

Study Skills Collection The Library has a section dedicated to study skills, where books can be found on a range of topics including, how to conduct your research and essay writing.

12 Late Returns

The Library sends reminder notices to your AUCB email account three days before your items are due back. You will also receive notices for overdue items on two occasions. If you do not respond to the notices, you will be sent a bill for the replacement cost of any outstanding items. If you have a problem with an overdue item, or if you are going to be away from the University College for some time, please contact the Library. If you have mitigating circumstances please inform the Library as soon as possible, as fines cannot be waived retrospectively.

Fines Fines are charged on all items returned late. Fines are also charged over vacation periods when the Library is open. Charges apply to all borrowers. Fines must be paid before any items can be borrowed or renewed.

14 Off-air recordings The Library has a large collection of television recordings dating back to 1992. The collection includes documentaries, arts programmes, television plays, films, animation and more. We record an average of 12 – 15 hours of relevant television programmes each week under an Educational recording licence. If you would like a TV programme recorded (for educational use only) please make a request using the form available at the Library counter or contact your Subject Librarian. Please allow at least two days notice and you will be contacted when the recording is ready to borrow.

Students with additional needs The Library offers a range of support for students with additional needs. All our staff are happy to help students to access the Library services and collections. In addition we have a designated Library Assistant, Kay Day, who can offer support to Library users with additional needs. If you would like help with your research, please contact your Subject Librarian. The Library building is accessible and has a lift providing access to the first floor. There is a disabled toilet on the first floor. A separate leaflet is available which provides more information about the support we offer.

15 Comments and Suggestions

Comment forms If you wish to provide feedback - good or bad - about the Library and the services we offer, comment forms are available at the counter. We will usually respond to comment forms within four days of receiving them. They are an important way for us to receive feedback.

Suggestions We welcome suggestions from students for items to add to Library resources. If there are specific books, CDs, DVDs or journals you would like to recommend, complete a comments and suggestions form. If you put your name and course on the form, you will normally be notified of our decision within four days. In addition, you will be told when any items you have suggested are added to stock, so that you have the opportunity to borrow them first.

16 Security in the Library

The Library is covered by closed circuit TV which is monitored constantly. Fire doors are alarmed. Any incident when the entrance/exit alarm is triggered is taken very seriously and is recorded for security purposes. People who have triggered the alarm may be banned from the Library for a specified period. Other security incidents may incur a longer ban. Users who are banned have the right of appeal to a member of senior management, whose decision is final. Please do not leave valuables unattended in the Library, as we take no responsibility for any loss or damage incurred.

17 Library code of conduct

Please treat the Library staff, Library resources and your fellow students with respect and:

• use the first floor for individual study without talking • talk quietly downstairs: noise travels in the Library • tidy your area when you have finished: put books on trolleys and recycle any waste paper in the bins provided • put your mobile phone on silent and leave the Library to take or make a call • do not bring food and drink into the Library • do not carry out practical work in the Library

The Library must not be used as part of a project, for example for film, photography or drawing, without first obtaining permission from Library staff. Please ask at the counter for a request form.

18 Library rules

• You must abide by any legislative or licence restrictions laid down in relation to electronic information. • The law restricts what you can photocopy and copy. Notices about this are displayed by the photocopiers, CD, DVD players and video machines. • If you do not return items issued to you on time, you will be charged fines. • If you remove any item from the Library which is not issued to you, or if you damage Library property, you will face disciplinary procedures and may be banned from using the Library and its facilities. • If you lend your Library card, or take items on your card for other people, you will be liable for any fines incurred. You will also be liable to pay the replacement cost of any item lost or damaged whilst on loan under your name.
