Robert Boardman is heading off to Tanzania in late July for one month volunteering in a local community. Robert has been volunteering at our Messy Church over the past months as part of his Duke of Edinburgh award. Angela Jenkins, churchwarden, added Robert is a great positive role model for our Messy children. We wish him a great experience on his trip. Photo of Robert with some of the Messy Team.

Marston Moor Youth Club is held every Friday night 7-8:30pm, during term time in Tockwith Church and is open to Year 6 to Year 9.

DONATE A BIBLE We have a scheme that allows families to donate a Bible to the Church dedicated to their children to recognize the date of their Baptisms. We would like to extend the scheme to anyone who might wish to donate a Bible and dedicate it in memory of a loved one. If anyone would like to dedicate a Bible they are £15 each and we put the name inside the Bible cover. Please contact Angela Jenkins on 01423 358067

Did you know that Tockwith Church has a Facebook page? It is an excellent way to keep in touch with the local community regarding what is happening in church. It’s a great way to keep in touch with busy mums and dads and remind them of events that are coming to church. We pop lots of photos on of various events at church. /

We support both York and Wetherby Food Banks. Any surplus food is passed on to other Food Banks in less fortunate locations. There are concerns that rural residents may not realize that they are just as eligible for aid. Where appropriate, please spread the word. All donations are very gratefully received. Thank you. Barbara and Peter Harris

We’re listening for your ideas for the Parish Magazine

The Editor would really like to hear your views on the Parish Magazine and parƟcularly your ideas for themes each month. If you have any comments or suggesƟons please tell Norman Waller: nr.waller@bƟnternet.com

For many parents, the birth of a child is a deeply spiritual event. The Church recognises this, and provides a Service of Thanksgiving for the Birth of a Child for those who would prefer this to a ‘christening’ (now more commonly called ‘Baptism’). It includes prayers for the child and family, and a recognition of all the hopes invested in the child, and is a great way to start a little life.

Please contact your churchwardens for more details, or contact the vicar, Rev.Roy Shaw 01423 359003 or via [email protected] Please note: Allocated Baptism date for 2017 - 10th September Tockwith C.E. Primary School

During July we were thrilled to have the Community speed initiative and local police visit us. They let the children participate in tracking the speed of cars through the village. The children’s focus shows just how much they enjoyed the experience.

Some of our children recently entered a competition with Linden Homes to name the streets in the new housing development. We are pleased to show you our winners and their winning street names.

Sports Day as ever was a fantastic event and we were very lucky with the weather in particular for the annual BBQ where we fed over 300 people!

We have also bid a fond farewell to our Year 6, who are now preparing themselves for secondary school. We wish them, and all our leavers the very best in the future.

We cannot sign off for the summer without paying tribute to our staff leavers too. Both have been with us a very long time indeed and we have truly valued the service they have given the school. We wish Mrs Loach and Mr Wardle every happiness for the future.

All at Tockwith School wish you a very enjoyable summer and a reminder that we re-open on Tuesday September 5th.

Would you like to contribute to our parish magazine?

We are always looking for contributions from our readers (as many of you are aware).

The more people who contribute the wider the variety of stories, reports and items of interest we can publish.

There is an opportunity to share all sorts of things. We will consider articles on Travel Walking and hiking Adventures Visits to exhibitions, concerts and places Recipes (we love recipes) Your spiritual life and growth Humour Poetry Books you’ve read and would like to share. Pictures, alone or with a story Something you’d like to publicise God’s glorious creation, natural or made by human hand

Contributions can be from as little as 50 words or a full article up to about 750 words. Readers like photographs and pictures to go with the stories, which usually means less words to write. The editorial team obviously have the last say on whether material is appropriate for the magazine but we don’t refuse much. The copy dates are always in the magazine with the Editor’s details. If you would like to contribute you can contact, Norman Waller Tel: 01423 358588 or email [email protected].

TOCKWITH WITH WILSTROP PARISH COUNCIL www.tockwith.gov.uk

Parish Council meetings are, as a rule, held on the third Wednesday of the month. Meetings are not normally held in August or December. Members of the public are welcome to attend these meetings and they start at 7.30pm and are held in Tockwith Church. The minutes of previous Parish Council meetings can be found on its own web site at www.tockwith.gov.uk.

The next Parish Council meeting will be on Wednesday 20th September 2017 at 7.30pm in Tockwith Church.

Marston Moor District Councillor ± Tim Myatt Tim can be contacted either by telephone on 07956 043370 or by email at [email protected].

North Yorkshire County Council ± Ainsty Division Andrew Paraskos is the elected County Councillor for the Ainsty Division. His contact telephone number is 0780 880 3667.

IT MIGHT BE YOU?

There are still three vacancies on the Parish Council which can be filled by co-option. Having three vacancies does affect the efficient running of the Council. If you would like to make a difference to this community then it is one way to get involved. Please contact the Clerk Joy Richardson if you are interested telephone 07929 372 352.

Volunteers needed to help with Community Speed Watch

The main purpose of Community Speed Watch is to deter speeding, educate drivers, and encourage more care on our local roads.

The times of checks have been varied but they very much depend on the availability of the volunteers. Some recent checks have been done to monitor commuter traffic during the early evening and disappointingly there has been a higher than average number of vehicles recorded as warranting warning letters being sent to them by the police.

More volunteers to help keep our roads safe are needed. If you would like to get involved then please contact the Parish Clerk at [email protected] and a volunteer will get in touch with you.

The Parish Council and the Police have been to Tockwith School to deliver a road safety programme and make the pupils aware of Community Speed Watch and let them try out the speed gun for themselves.

Ŷƌǁ Changing the way we help you dispose of hazardous household waste - tell us what you think

North Yorkshire County Council is seeking the views of residents about how we can help you dispose of hazardous household waste in the future. At present residents are unable to dispose of hazardous wastes at our 20 Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs). Instead the council provides a home collection service, free of charge, for hazardous waste such as white spirit, some paints and paint cleaners; weed killers and pesticide; brake fluid and anti-freeze. We now need to look at other ways of helping residents dispose of hazardous household waste.

We are asking for your views in a consultation starting on 10 July 2017. The consultation asks questions around a number of potential options for future hazardous household waste disposal services, including: accepting hazardous household waste at the county’s HWRCs to enable residents to dispose of it at their convenience, charging for home collection services for some or all types of hazardous household waste, ceasing to provide a home collection service for some or all types of hazardous household waste.

Responses need The consultation will run until 2 October 2017 to be with us by and anyone wanting to take part can do so online ctotobe 2 OctoberO 2017 at www.northyorks.gov.uk/hhwconsultation

Business and Environmental Services MARSTON MOOR WALKERS

Three Weir Walk. Rain in the morning gave way to a pleasant summer’s day walk, which began from the bandstand at the Wilderness car park, Wetherby, and our first sighting of a red kite. We started by making a detour to the weir on the River Wharfe, constructed by local volunteers in 1982, and which incorporates a salmon pass. We then crossed the grade 2 listed bridge with 13th century origins, and followed the A1M via a leafy path and through into Beilby Wood. Leaving the noise of the A1, we turned into the quieter Jackdaw Lane, back toward the river. From here we had a good view of the Limestone Cliffs at Jackdaw Crag, and could hear the chatter of the Jackdaws in the trees. Across the river was a delightful pastoral scene, of cattle in the meadows, and then two herons were seen flying upstream. We climbed the steepest part of the walk, up the well cared for path, and followed the river downstream, along a path dotted with tall attractive white Campanulas. A wood mouse was spotted crossing the path, making for safety in the undergrowth. We were now close to our second weir, where the Salmon Pass was accessible, and it was surprising how forceful was the water flow below us. We carried on, over the 18th century Thorp Arch bridge, meeting the Ebor Way , and we followed this along the road and a well marked footpath to Flint Mill Grange. Soon after we heard and had a glimpse of our third weir. The name of the Grange reflects the importance of flint in the area. Crushed flint had been used in pottery making during the late 18th century. We left Ebor Way, and followed the River Wharfe upstream, along Crowcroft Bank, noting meadow brown butterfly, more campanula and cranesbills, returning to Wilderness car park. Approximately 7 miles stroll. Next walk Monday 14th August, 2.00pm at the village hall, Little Ouseburn. All welcome. Please come along. MARSTON MOOR PROBUS CLUB

On Tuesday 27th June 2017 Mr Malcolm Coward introduced Mr Bob Brook to talk about Poppleton Community Railway Nursery. The nursery was relocated to Poppleton in 1941 from the Leeman Road area. The nursery produced plants to decorate railway stations in the North East and later it also included other large stations further south. Following privatisation of the railways (1996) the nursery became run down and finally closed in 2006. Weeds moved in, buildings began to decay until the Community Group received the keys in 2009. The useable equipment and glasshouses were put to use and plants were propagated for sale. Volunteers with railway, gardening or no experience joined in and still run the Nursery which is now a Charity. It has received support from the NHS for its therapeutic role and has many ways of helping people through the range of activities. A building project was helped by York College students on supervised work experience. It is open for plant sales on many Saturdays and other times which can be found on:- www.poppletonrailwaynursery.co.uk &KLOGUHQ¶VDFWLYLWLHVDQGYDULRXVZRUNVKRSVDUH also organised. After questions Bob was thanked in the usual way.

The meeting on 29th August will hear from Richard Young about the early days of film making.

The Club normally meets on the morning of the last Tuesday of the month in Long Marston Village Hall, which has a good car park.

New members and guests are welcome, contact the Secretary, Mr Bob Ellis on 01423 358 393.

I reread the parable of the Good Samaritan as a potential theme for this month's Notes, and was struck anew by the clear evidence that it is just as relevant today as it was when first told by Our Lord. When one thinks about the story it is also clear that it is concerned with both the individual level and the community and charts the path of their respective responsibilities for the care of the wounded and the vulnerable. We can see that the robbery and mugging of the “certain man” on the road to Jericho is echoed in our own day in the media and the catalogue of murders, assaults and thieving which they report. As regards the latter much of it is the quest for money to fund addiction to drugs or alcohol. And even in the countryside the theft of livestock has become a serious and illicit trade, assisted by abattoirs who ask no questions and pay cash.

There is of course a community context in which contractors skimp on their work. It remains to be seen whether allegations about fire risk assessments, alarms, cladding etc .. in tower blocks such as the Grenfell Tower are substantiated by the pending inquiry. A wider issue is to ask whether it is wise to build tower blocks whose upper floors cannot be reached by fire-engine extending ladders, or to advise residents to stay put until rescued by the Fire Service. Both questions seem to me to be interlinked. It is disturbing that on one hand fraudsters reap the fruits of claiming benefits to which they are not entitled while food banks are essential to support those who are below the poverty line. The Christian response in providing the resources for both the Grenfell Tower survivors and the food banks brings one back to the Good Samaritan. He did not stop at taking the victim to the local inn but also funded his lodging. The inn-keeper trusted the Good Samaritan to meet any costs not covered by the 2Denarii (Roman pence). I wonder how many publicans today would put these costs on the slate for a complete stranger, certainly not all. But in the parable the publican does not even hesitate for a moment, as we should not hesitate in accepting the Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Perhaps an interpretation which casts the inn as our society and the victim's relationship with his social environment for good or ill is defined in the parable. This also conveys a message for us about the role of the Church and members of the congregation, and how they should react to tragedies like the Grenfell Tower or the shooting-down of the Malaysian Airlines flight. We should offer up our prayers to Almighty God to comfort families and friends and seek practical ways such as via food banks to play the part of the Good Samaritan. He is an excellent role model with a particular appeal to the young. See you in Church.

HGW Archdeaconry of York Prayer

Generous God, you look upon us with love and mercy.

Build up your people in this Archdeaconry of York, we pray, and make your churches places of generosity and welcome, that we might nurture disciples of your Son.

May we seek to work as partners in mission, desiring the guidance and strength of the Holy Spirit, as we live out your Gospel in our parishes.

This we ask in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

DIOCESE NEWS

$ VXPPDU\ RI $UFKELVKRS 6HQWDPX¶V VSHHFK WR synod on 7th July 2017.

Two and a half years on, with a Referendum and an unexpected General Election behind us, the world may have moved on, but the key questions remain the same.

It is impossible to consider the kind of policies which should shape our future as a nation without first focussing on moral principles and virtues ± and indeed the vision for our society - which undergird them. Recent political storms, and the tragic events of recent weeks, have caused many to pause and reflect. The Archbishop of Canterbury and I have asked that as a Synod we spend this next hour reflecting upon these things today. The Christian vision is of a world in which we are created for fellowship and mutual responsibility rather than for individualism and consumerism. A world in which the principal aim of policy is to enhance the well-being (that is, the personal and communal flourishing) of all in society.

As we now seek to reassess our relationships, in our local communities, in Europe, and internationally, our goal must always be the common good of all. At the outset, and with the presence of our beloved brothers from Finland and Germany in mind, I would add that this must involve a fresh commitment to building relations between European and British churches - at central and at local level - to lean against the tendency to pull apart which will get worse as negotiations go forward towards leaving the European Union.

The financial collapse in 2008 taught us that we had become obsessed with money. People were ERUURZLQJPRQH\WKH\GLGQ¶WKDYHWREX\WKLQJVWKH\GLGQ¶WQHHGWRDFKLHYHD KDSSLQHVVWKDWZRXOGQ¶WODVW

We must learn from our present political and economic challenges to think less about the price of things and more about the value of things.

There will be many lessons to learn from the fire in Grenfell Tower ± but we are already aware that false economies can lead to human tragedy.

The promotion of well-being must surely be about developing systems and policies which provide for people according to their need, in order to release their talents in turn for the common profit of us all: building their skills and confidence, paying them a Living Wage in order to enable them to live a full life, and to understand and exercise their responsibility towards themselves and others. That is why I believe that we should stop talking about welfare benefits and talk instead about social insurance, a term which underlines both that our focus should be on need, and that we are all in this together.

What we must hope for today is a vision of a Well-being, not a Welfare Society. This would be founded on principles of Freedom, Fellowship, Service of God and Neighbour and on the Rule of Law. These principles are the Rock, the firm foundations on which we can build a just, sustainable and compassionate society in which all can participate and flourish. Anything else is, I fear, Sand.

Let me apply this body of principle to the areas of Taxation and Social Care in our common life together in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Social Care

As for Social Care, we are in quite a muddle. The Conservative party manifesto proposed to allow everyone to keep the last £100k of their accumulated wealth after paying for social FDUH%XWWKLVZDVTXLFNO\GXEEHGDµGHPHQWLDWD[¶EHFDXVHLWZDVVHHQDVXQIDLU

If we had two neighbours, one of whom had cancer requiring expensive and longstanding care, and another who had dementia requiring expensive and longstanding care, the person with cancer would be paid for by the community, through the NHS, and the person with dementia would have to pay for care themselves. This reversed the previous policy (following The Andrew Dilnot UHSRUWLQ IRUDFDSRQSHRSOH¶VOLDELOLWLHV7KLVKDGEHHQ legislated for in The Care Act in 2015 and was then deferred, just after the 2015 election, from 2016 implementation to 2020 implementation.

Older people may legitimately be asked to pay at least some of the tax to fund this care, but surely this is an area where we are better off working together, and taking the risk jointly? ± that is what a cap was meant to do. A consultation in the Autumn of this year would be most welcome.

On Tax

The level of public sector borrowing has declined as public spending has been constrained, and tax has seen some increase as the economy has grown. The outstanding debt is still relatively high by historic standards, although not alarmingly so.

See, for example, figure three in the release from the Office for National Statistics: dated May 2017. [1] The red line shows that Public Sector Borrowing has come down significantly as a percentage of GDP. Levels of borrowing are not what they have been.

The main challenge RQWD[DQGSXEOLFVSHQGLQJLVWKDWZHGRQ¶WUHDOO\KDYHHQRXJKWD[WR SD\IRUDOOWKHWKLQJVZHZDQWWRGRWRJHWKHU7KLVZHHN¶VGHEDWHRQSXEOLFVHFWRUSD\KDV demonstrated that there is little sign of a coherent plan about how to fund the health service, education, social care, defence, housing, or transport infrastructure. Proposed solutions pit one section of society against another to provide the funds ± either by cutting public spending for some, or increasing taxes for others. Surely the nature of communal action is that it is precisely action taken together.

7KHODQJXDJHRIµWD[¶LPSOLHVWKDWZKDWZHKDYHLVµRXUV¶DQGWKHVWDWHµWDNHV¶IURPZKDWLV RXUV WKURXJK WD[DWLRQ 7D[ EHFRPHV D FRQFHVVLRQ IURP D SRVLWLRQ WKDW PDNHV µSULYDWH SURSHUW\¶DQDEsolute, to be compromised only as far as absolutely necessary. (The debate DERXWWKHµUHTXLVLWLRQLQJ¶RIXQRFFXSLHGIODWVLQ.HQVLQJWRQIRUWKHYLFWLPVRIWKH*UHQIHOO Tower fire shows how difficult it has become to make a case for the public good, even in extreme cases transcending our normal rules about private property.)

What can we bring to this debate? We have a strong Christian story about how communities can work together, going right back to Old Testament narratives around sharing of land, redemption of debts, all bound together by the Golden Rule: “In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets” (Matthew 7:12).

And while Torah provisions about jubilee and not gleaning the last grape, or harvesting the edge of the field may not find a modern application, those laws witness to a notion contrary to giving absolute status to private property: the land and its produce come from God and are for the people as a whole (Psalm 24). Equally, while it may be that the practice of the earliest Christians of “having and holding all things in common” (Acts 2: 44 and Acts 4: 32) would be impossible to apply to a developed society, that practice also witnesses to the primacy of the common good.

,¶PWKHUHIRUHVXJJHVWLQJ that the taxation system not only funds important public goods, our defence and security, our flourishing through education, our care for the sick and vulnerable EXWDOVRµSXWVPRQH\LQLWVSODFH¶LQWHUUXSWLQJPRQH\¶VFRQVWDQWWHQGHQF\WRGRPLQDWHRXU priorities. Our taxation system should make clear that while private property may be an efficient way of ensuring that our resources are stewarded and cared for, it is in no way an DEVROXWH:HGRQ¶Wµown¶RXUPRQH\ZHµcare for¶RXUPRQH\DVSDUWRIWKHZKole human resource for our social flourishing.

In this regard, Synod, may I draw your attention to the Christian Aid tax justice campaign. Members of Synod, to serve the common good, how many of us would be prepared to top up freely our income tax from our net monthly take home pay for Education, Health, and Social Care?

What our society needs in order to regain faith in politics and in politicians, to sustain hope for justice and to fashion policies which deliver the common good, is to develop a new, values-based politics reflecting four core principles:

1. Recognition of the equal value of all in society;

2. commitment to offer everyone the opportunity to flourish;

3. appreciation of our essential human inter-relatedness;

4. acceptance of our responsibility towards ourselves as well as towards others.

Faith, Hope and Charity ± these are the three anchors which hold fast the ship of the mind amidst the dangers of the waves and, I may add, the Ship of State as well.

'KK^DKKZ NATURE RESERVE COWTHORPE VOLUNTEERING The reserve relies entirely on voluntary help and we welcome anyone young and old to join in the many aspects of work required in its day to day management. If you would like more information or wish to volunteer please email [email protected] with your enquiry and details.

Work continues through the summer months to develop our Nature Reserve so everyone can enjoy it. We concentrate on general maintenance and repair work including land management, in the case of Goosemoor controlling flag iris which has become an intrusive species which is having a negative impact, as well as keeping the feeders topped up. Of course we have to take special care during this time to avoid disturbance of the wildlife particularly nesting birds.

Our next project, is the creation of a pond dipping area and hibernaculum for frogs, toads, spiders etc. covered with foraging plants. We are very grateful to Tockwith with Wilstrop Parish Council for the award of a £400 grant towards this project.

Please support our bird feeding programme through sales of Johnston & Jeff products; PEANUTS 20kg £29.50 FAT BALLS Tub of 50 only £4.80
