Can you help to make a difference? Christian Aid is one of those charities constantly trying to relieve the lives of poverty-stricken people across the world. Last year you helped to raise the excellent total of £735.47 in Kingsdown, which contributed significantly to the £9035 collected by all the churches in the Deal area. Christian Aid Week this year is 12th - 18th May, when you can help us con- tibute even more by donating generously in the envelope that will drop through your door, or by offering to deliver and collect envelopes for the house-to-house collection. Your help in collecting in a road in Kingsdown will be much appreciated, not least by the stalwart band of collectors who volunteer each year If you would like to help in this way, please phone Alan or Christine Smith on 361 452 for more information or to volunteer, or both! We look forward to hearing from you.

Financially the Rural Roundup seems in a fairly good position for yet another year. Ringwould-w-Ringwould Parish Council have agreed a donation of £700 which is the cost of producing one edition. We have also had promises from a couple of fund-raising ventures and donations are slowly coming in, which is very encouraging. Thanks very much, everyone. Every month requests come in for new adverts to be inserted. This proves that word is getting around that it is worth advertising in this publication. I know it is read well by the response I have to any mistakes I make. Sorry if I confused everyone by not changing the month on the Calendar in the last issue. Before I close I must mention how lovely the daffodils look, popping up everywhere in Kingsdown. This is the result of the efforts of the Kingsdown Conservation Society. Also a welcome to Helen & Martin Rodney-Smith who have very kindly offered to take over the accounts of Rural Roundup from next month. A big thank you to Helen Williams who has done a grand job as treasurer over the past three years. Ed.

ST JOHN’S HERITAGE ASSOCIATION This new organistion, set up to help protect another corner of YOUR village, is making progress in its infancy. To help us grow we do need members and donations so we would be grateful if you could give some serious thought to joining us as we try to ensure that YOUR local church is here for generations to come. In addition to the perceived normal use of the church, ie. regular Sunday worship, we would like to see it used for a wide range of community activities such as concerts and art exhibitions. But to do this, and to maintain its fundamental purpose of spreading God‟s word, we do need to protect and improve the fabric of the building. To help us with our endeavours and to ensure that YOUR church is going to be there when you need it we do need your help. So please pick up, complete and return a Membership Form. If you can‟t find a form locally, i.e. from the back of the church, then please contact me to have one sent to you either by e-mail or „snail-mail‟! 6 Dear Friends There is a story that says when Jesus returned to heaven, the Archangel Michael barred his way. The archangel said, "How can you return to heaven? Your work is not yet completed. There are many who do not know about or who have not heard of your saving acts." Jesus said, "I have left my friends to complete what I have begun." The Archangel was amazed. "Do you mean those puny, often straying humans?" "Yes," said Jesus, "I trust them and I know that through following me they will bring my gospel to all the world." So, if Jesus trusts us to continue his work - knowing that we aren't perfect and that we will make mistakes - who are we to say and think that we are not good enough, yet this is a comment I hear from so many.

Marianne Williamson writes. Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves: "Who am I to be brilliant, smart, talented, giving?"

Actually who are you not to be? You are a child of God, Your playing small does not serve the world. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us: it's in everyone. And as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we're liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

So let your light shine for all to see and then just stand back and wait to see what a difference it can make.. Yours in Christ Cathy * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Kingsdown Open Gardens Scheme On 22nd June, St. John's Church is organizing an "Open Gardens" afternoon in aid of church funds, and I would like to ask you if you would be prepared to open up your garden to visitors for the afternoon - between 2.00 and 4.30pm as part of the scheme? There will be cream teas at Pentire House on the Leas and also in St. John's church. We hope to make this an annual event and there will be prizes for a number of different categories with the visitors being the judges. If you are interested please give me a call on 373 951 or pick up a form from the Church, Post office or shops. Cathy

Dear Villagers The AGM of Kingsdown Village Hall was successfully held on 26th March and although the attendance was disappointing the reporting and presentation of accounts was correct and well received. The supporting documents are available on the Village Hall web site for scrutiny. There you will be able to read my report and details of progress. The last Hall year has been very busy and a lot of work regarding the re-furbishment has been completed. There is still much to do and improvements will continue to be evident as the year goes on. We have been awarded the level two Hallmark certificate for efficient management and health and safety compli- ance. The Hall usage has increased and there is a lot more interest, and demand in bookings, as the improvements are made. These improvements all come at a cost and there is a lot of hard work put in by the Trustees to trace available funding and compete for the money to imp- lement the improvements that you can see happening. All this is done on a voluntary basis and takes a lot of time and dedication to archieve the aims that we have set to improve the venue for the benefit of the community. It is true that the first grant of £75000.00 was provided by the Parish Council and this was available from a precept applied over the last twenty years and set aside to support the upkeep of both Kingsdown and Ringwould Halls for the benefit of the community. This is not something of a whim that was handed out rashly. I mention this because I understand that there have been negative comments by some residents in the Village, that the money has been squandered and wasted when it could have been put to better use. If there are those who have issues about such things, it would have been more constructive if they had attended the AGM, which had been well advertised, and put their case in person. There was also an opportunity, which is still open, to be a Village Rep Trustee, and this would allow another voice to pursue these concerns if necessary. I do, however, think that the majority of the community are happy with the progress of the work to the hall, and they can be assured that we will continue to do our best to support the community. We are always pleased to get your feed back and any ideas for improvement to the Hall would be welcome, so we can help you enjoy a very pleasant, traditional, and historical venue, which has been around for a long time. Members discussed the idea of buying the land adjacent to Kingsdown Village Hall, and a proposal was presented but Councillors felt that the Parish Council could not take on such a large debt. Members of the Parish Council had met with the developer and the figure that was given to the Parish Council to buy the land was between 1.1 and 1.4 million pounds. The Parish Council has adopted some new procedures to improve the Parish Council‟s Code of Practice, which should improve the effectiveness of the Parish Council. A sub-committee has been formed and the group will work on ways to improve the communication between the Councillors and members of the parish. Ideas that are being developed include updating the website and creating a database of email addresses to keep people informed of Parish Council news. The Parish Council have given a grant to Rural Roundup for the year 2013/14 and would like to thank the Rural Roundup team for their hard work all year long. The Parish Council have also sponsored a Beach Clean on Kingsdown Beach. The next meeting of Ringwould with Kingsdown Parish Council is Monday 13th May 2013 at 7.30pm at the Learning Opportunities Centre. Katie Amaouche, Clerk to the Council Kingsdown Village Plan ? Is it time for the residents of Kingsdown to produce a Village Plan which could help 'steer' what happens here in the future? Would you like to have your say about why you like the village and what you think needs improving? What do you think is needed for Kingsdown to remain a thriving, living village, with a community which cares for all and everything around? To find out more, drop into the Kingsdown Village Hall on Saturday 18th May between 10.00am and 2.00pm where you will be able to discuss what is involved in this community-led project and maybe play a part in its development. This is a joint Parish Council and Kingsdown Conservation Group initiative. P.Evemy Copy Dates for Rural Roundup 2013 Issue Closing Date Issue Closing Date

24 SECRETARY :- Kathy Erridge Tel: 01304 373 402 Meetings are held at 2.00pm on the second Monday of each month (except Aug) at Kingsdown Village Hall, Upper Street or Ringwould Village Hall, Dover Road. Our Spring Lunch in April was held on one of the few days that we didn‟t have sleet or rain! The meal was provided by the Committee with lovely desserts made by members and was enjoyed by all who attended including some husbands and partners. In April some of the members also had an hilarious afternoon at the Marlowe Theatre watching a production of “The Full Monty”. Several members join a walking group each Thursday morning, meeting at the Post Office in Kingsdown at 9.30am. Even the sleet did not deter us from a walk to Walmer Castle one week, but we were certainly ready for a hot drink when we got there. The next meeting is on Monday 13th May at Kingsdown Village Hall at 2.00pm where this year‟s Resolution “Tackling the decline of our high streets and town centres” will be discussed. This should be a lively debate about how the decline can be avoided. Lisa Souter Happy Birthday to all with Birthdays in May Patricia Dennis 3rd, Sylvia Perry 9th, Patricia Grant 10th, Irene Kimber 13th, Stella Preston 18th, Jordon Alexander 20th, Jennifer Van Lens 28th, Diana Mishkin 31st,

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The sun is out as pen is put to paper although the wind is still cold. One must not complain as yesterday (7th April) it was glorious and five hours were spent in the front garden riddling the stones out of one of the two beds put in last year. Potatoes and tomatoes did very well out there although this year being adventurous is on the cards. But I got really excited when I discovered in the greenhouse (no heating) that the peas sown in large pots and the Indian Blanket flower seeds sown during the very cold spell, more out of desperation than frustration, had put their heads above the parapet. And the shallots also in pots were putting down roots. Hopefully this means that the late Spring is around the corner – nature has a wonderful way of putting itself right. With everything put on hold we should have a splendid splash of colour this summer. Daffodils in May – what a lovely thought. At the next meeting on Monday 20th May (a week earlier because of the bank holiday) the speaker will be Judith Bryant talking to us about Climbers and Wall Shrubs and we look forward to seeing old and new members there. Membership is £7 for the year if you wish to join. Schedules for the Annual Show are now on sale in the PO and cost £1. They are numbered on the entry form inside as this will be your exhibitors‟ number on the day. The Plant Sale is on 1st June and there is an advertisement in this Rural Roundup giving you the times etc.....All contributions will be gratefully received. Have a good Spring Bank holiday in the garden - weather permitting. Susan Martin, Chairman 25

26 Letters KINGSDOWN LIVE LOUNGE SUNDAY 19TH MAY 3PM - 6PM IN AID OF DOVER COMMUNITY RADIO All Rural Roundup readers and their families and friends are warmly invited to an informal music making session and afternoon tea at the home of the Cordes family in Hillcrest Road, Kingsdown. Come and just listen or play/sing something you're working on or one of your favourites. Lots of time to meet friends, old and new. All ages welcome - for young people or adult learners, this is an ideal opportunity if you are preparing a piece for an exam or a performance to have a run through in a supportive environment. Pop in just for an hour or spend the afternoon with us. We have held these live lounges quarterly since 2011, raising over £250 for cancer research and support for carers. This time the event will raise money for Dover Community Radio so they can do another 28 days on FM in 2013 after their first FM session last November when Gary presented a soul and jazz funk show. £5 admission for adults, £2 for students including refreshments. We are having a French theme this time so if you fancy performing do bring something by a French composer or about some aspect of France or French life to play, sing or recite and expect Breton dancing! Contact Maddie on 01304 239 055 or 07799 386 055 for more information and to book your spaces - maximum 30 people will fit into our lounge!

STRINGS PLAY DAY, ASTOR THEATRE, DEAL. SUNDAY 12TH MAY Kingsdown based music teacher Maddie Cordes and cellist Mike Bacon who co-directs Cello Love weekends present a Strings Play Day at the Astor Community Theatre, Deal. Have you recently started or returned to playing? Or is your instrument in the loft? Or are you a young person looking for more opportunities to make music with other strings players? Bring your music making to life with our play day! The beginners‟ workshop in the morning is designed to improve confidence, technique and fluency of strings players (violin, viola, cello, double bass). The music won‟t demand more than first position playing and will be in easy keys from beginner up to grade 2 standard. There‟ll be plenty of technical advice, gentle learning challenges and help with sight-reading. This is the perfect opportunity to enjoy some ensemble playing with others of the same standard. For intermediates, in the afternoon workshop you will gain more experience and confidence at playing in ensembles while enjoying your music making. There will be lots of exciting repertoire from different genres. You'll need to know how to shift positions and to play music in up to three sharps or flats at about Grade 3 to 5+ level. To book your workshop place or for any queries, contact Maddie on 01304 239 055 or email: [email protected] Morning workshop: 9.30am to 12.30pm - Afternoon workshop: 2-5pm £15 per workshop place subject to availability, adults and teens welcome. 30 Property Owners Responsibilities

Spring and summer is always a busy time for clearing footways and road edges and, as well as your County Council's responsibility, property owners also have some responsibilities for this work. You might be interested to read the following information supplied by KCC Highways in 2012 with regard to property owner responsibilities. If the boundary of your property borders the footway then please be aware that the full width of the footpath/pavement must be available for use by pedestrians and there must be a minimum height clearance over the foot- path/pavement of 2.1 metres (seven feet) for any vegetation. If the boundary of your property borders the highway, then please be aware that if you have vegetation that overhangs into the road there must be a minimum height clearance of five metres/16 feet to accommodate buses/ HGV's that may use the road. If your property is rural then vegetation should be 0.45 metres/1' 6" feet behind the edge of the road and all signs must be kept clear of foliage for at least 20 metres. Please also pay special attention to any of your trees/hedges etc if your property is on or near a junction or a bend in the road and maintain maximum visibility. Thanks to the generosity and enthusiasm of our supporters the 'Build it for Babies' appeal has successfully reached its targets and raised £1 million, enabling us to build seven new clinics in some of the most isolated communities in Bangladesh. Up to now people had to make difficult journeys to access healthcare. Lack of care after birth is one of the biggest causes of child mortality in that area. These life-saving clinics will provide essential healthcare to mothers and young children in an area that has a shockingly high mortality rate and a chronic shortage of skilled workers. Following on from this success another clinic is now being built in Poilarkandi. For further information on this work and other work of the charity see www.savethechildren.org.uk Sarah Spong 'Chair East Kent Coastal Branch Save the Children' 31

Once again our thanks go to the many folk who devoted so much time and energy to the campaign against the “beach huts”. Over 300 objections, a 700 signature petition and a huge rebuttal dossier from KCG‟s campaign team, supported by all the conservation organisations, were filed with the planners, and produced an excellent result for the village. But we must remain vigilant.

On Tuesday 14th May, John Puckett, chairman of the Kent Bat Group, will be talking about these fascinating creatures at Kingsdown School. Doors open at 7.30 pm for 8.00pm. Call Rosie Bolton on 365 963 for details and reservations.

The Kingsdown Garage Safari will be held on 19th May. Maps costing £1 are available on the day from Kingsdown Village Hall, Lyndhurst - Victoria Road and Hardicot Guest House - Kingsdown Road. Happy hunting!! Mary Lord
