3D Printing/Rapid Prototyping Archway now offers Z-Corp’s line of 3D Printers. Amazing machines that take a 3D model directly out of 3D software and converts that into a physical 3D model. Archway chose Z-Corp because of its technology developed at MIT, speed, low cost safe materials, ability to produce color models, precision and other factors. As simple to operate as a plotter, the Z-Corp 3D printers make physical models of: parts, assemblies, buildings, terrain, process plants and more. REPORT 2005 3D Status Report What has happened in the 3D market in the past 12 months is nothing short of phenomenal. Software releases have broken through the hard-to-use barrior and prices have plummeted for both commercial and academic users. More and more designers are adding 3D to their arsenal to remain competitive. Some just need it to show their design to a prospective client, to the planning commission or others for the purpose of visualization. Or, to produce output to drive a 3D printer to make a physical model. Still others are starting to design in 3D and then cut the drawings semi-automatically. Here is a short guide to examples of 3D to meet every budget, platform and purpose: If you use a Mac and your need is to show a 3D computer model of a design that you primarily make with 2D software, you have several options: 3DJoy from Archway (product of VIDI) is only $295 for classic Macs. Add VersaCAD for Mac to do your CAD design work and the total is still only $629. Or, step up to Solid Thinking Forma for Mac OSX at $495. Combine that with VersaCAD for Mac for total of $895. If you need more than basic 3D functionality such as ability to output STL for 3D Printing, or complex NURB surface functions, step up to Solid Thinking Design at $2745. Add VersaCAD for $250 more to make it $2995. Check out Solid Thinking at www.solidthinking.com VersaCAD at www.versacad.com Ask us for the paper “3D Models from VersaCAD files” to get you started. If, you use a Windows computer and your need is to show a 3D model of a design that you primarily make with 2D software, you have many options. Solid Thinking Forma for Windows at $495 is lowest cost. Again, add VersaCAD for Windows to that for the 2D work for total of $995. Or, step up to NURBs-capable Rhino 3D for your 3D work at $895 or Rhino 3D plus VersaCAD for total of $1495. If you want some animation capability to go along with your 3D modeling and rendering, you can add Bongo to Rhino 3D for just $295. . See www.rhino3d.com Or, if organic models or animation is your primary goal, take advantage of Softimage’s new bargain basement pricing: Softimage Foundation at $495, or Softimage Essentials at $1995. www.softimage.com There is a paper on If you want to make the jump to design in 3D and cut the drawings from the model, you can do it with the software listed above, or, you might want to spend a little more and get software specific to your application. It may seem that it costs a lot of money, but, the content specific to your application may save enough time to make it worthwhile. Here are some examples: For the architect or building designer, we believe that MicroStation plus Triforma plus Bentley Architecture is one of the best products on the market. With the specials that happen from time to time, you can get this for as low ast $3k to $4K. If you are a structural engineer working on buildings, then MicroStation plus Triforma plus Structural is an excellent solution. If you already have MicroStation you can add Architecture for just $1395 or Structural for just $2250. See www.bentley.com If you are a civil engineer, then InRoads or Geopak are available for modeling terrain, roads, bridges and more. At $6000 this is expensive, but, well worth it. Or, you can lease InRoads for $2500 per year prepaid which includes maintenance as well as the license. Or, you can select PowerCivil which is essentially PowerDraft plus Geopak Site for only $3995. If you are a mechanical engineer designing machines, then Solid Edge v16 is the answer. Normally $4995, you can purchase that including year of maintenance for just $3995 if you have a 2D such as AutoCAD. Checkout www.solidedge.com If you are an academic, ie instructor, or student or you want to fill out a lab with good software, prices have never been better. Here are some examples: If you want primarily 2D with some 3D software for your Mac and/or Windows and you want updates and support, VersaCAD is offered with a free unlimited campus license if you pay just one year of Premium Service at $595. Step up to Bentley Education Network for $200 per seat per year (minimum 10 seats) including full MicroStation and 33 applications such as Architecture, InRoads and others mentioned above. Includes support and updates. Or, for 3D mechanical CAD get an unlimited campus license for Solid Edge at $1500 that includes updates and support. Rhino 3D classroom license is available for $975. Softimage is $295 per copy, or lease it for $175 per seat per year including license and maintenance. Amazing the technology that is available to teach CAD, 3D, animation and more. In addition, curriculum materials are available for free so the budget and time strapped instructor can get started quickly and easily. VersaCAD comes with instructor guide, student guide, and specific instructions for each discipline plus a paper on how to take VersaCAD models into 3D. Bentley is developing and soon will announce curriculum for BEN subscribers for site design, road design, architectural design and more. And, see the article on the front page about Z Corp 3D Printer. This comes with a nice 3D for editing and positioning a 3D model to actually make a physical model from any of the above software that can output an STL file! Academics can buy it with curriculum as well. It looks like everything is there for 3D to really take off. If you aren't already involved, why not at least put your toe in the water by adding Rhino 3D, or SolidThinking to your VersaCAD installation. .
