Many characters have appeared in the books of The Railway Series by the Rev. Only characters who appear in the books have been profiled in this article and in the case where a character has appeared in both series, only the book aspect has been addressed. These are the railway locomotives known universally in the books The Railway Series No. 2: Thomas the Tank Engine 'engines' of the North Western Railway NWRalso called The Railway Series No. 2: Thomas the Tank Engine railway:. Thomas the Tank Engine No. He is painted blue with red lining. Thomas was told to work on the mainline and was built in and arrived on in May He is a rather cheeky and can be impatient at times, but is a kind and clever engine who does his work without fussing and believes himself to be extremely clever on the main lines. He loves working on the Ffarquar branch linewhich is nicknamed after him and he is very proud of. He sometimes thinks that the railway couldn't run without him, but he learns not to be selfish, and his hard work definitely shows that he is really useful engine. Thomas is also the primary character in the eponymous television series, Thomas and Friends. Edward the Blue Engine No. He is the first character to appear in The Railway Series. He is painted blue with red stripes. He was built in and arrived on Sodor in Edward is one of the oldest engines on the railway, as well as very kind, always tries to help, and is a friend to everyone. He likes pulling as well as shunting trucks, which he is very knowledgeable about. However, the bigger engines sometimes make fun of him because they say that "' Tender Engines don't shunt'", and that he is old fashioned, but the Fat Controller still says he's a Useful Engine. Henry the Green Engine No. He is painted green with red stripes. After a major accident with "the Flying Kipper" an express freight trainHenry was rebuilt with a different boiler and a new Belpaire firebox though the Firebox is never identified as a Belpaire, its shape is distinctive, and Crewe, where Henry was sent for rebuilding, was well known for such boiler and Firebox conversions. He is one of the biggest engines like Gordonand although he is a hard worker at heart, can be quite highly-strung at times. He was built circaarrived on Sodor inand was rebuilt in Gordon the Big Engine No. He is the biggest engine on the railway and usually pulls the Express. He is also very boastful and proud, but good at heart. He loves pulling coaches but not dirty trucks. He was built inarrived on Sodor inand rebuilt in No. He is painted red with black later blue and gold stripes. He is quite vain, hot-headed, and loves showing off his red paint. Despite this, he is good-hearted and kind. It is stated [ where? Percy the Small Engine No. He is painted light green with red stripes. He is a cheeky little engine with a strong sense of adventure, a high work rate, and who doesn't let anyone push him around, which sometimes gets him into trouble. He was built sometime around the s or s and arrived on Sodor sometime before during a railway strike. Toby the No. He works on Thomas 's branch line, the Ffarquar branch line. He is painted brown and blue. He is a wise, experienced engine who knows all there is to know about running a branch line. Toby's cowcatchers and sideplates that cover his wheels mean he is ideal for taking stone trucks to and from the quarry at Ffarquhar, as the railway runs close to the road. Toby has his own coach, Henriettawho is painted chocolate brown. He is painted in Great Western green and is officially numbered 8, although he carries The Railway Series No. 2: Thomas the Tank Engine cast GWR number plate on his cab sides He currently runs his own branch line, The Little Western. He is a loyal hard worker who believes that "there are two ways to do things: the Great Western way, and the wrong way. Prior to his arrival on Sodor, he worked at Paddington. This fact is revealed in the story "Gordon goes Foreign". Donald and Douglas the Twin Engines Numbers 9 and 10 respectively are identical ex- Caledonian Railway Class locomotive who came from Scotland on trial. Not wanting to be separated, and knowing that one of them would have been scrapped on remaining in Scotland, they decided to travel together and hope for the best. Although the Fat Controller was only expecting one engine and intended to send the other back to Scotland, he changed his mind after hearing how they performed in the snow and decided to keep both engines in his fleet. The 'Twin Engines', as they became known, were painted black all- over on arrival at the island, but are then painted in blue with red stripes to match Gordon, Edward and Thomas. They are practical, cheeky and no-nonsense engines who can be relied upon for any task. They were built in and arrived on Sodor in Oliver the Great Western Engine No. The GWR class engines were fitted with a mechanical system allowing the driver to control the locomotive remotely from the cab of an 'autocoach'such as Isabel. He first appears in the book Enterprising Engineswhere his rescue by Douglas is described. His daring escape made him popular with the engines, which perhaps made The Railway Series No. 2: Thomas the Tank Engine a little overconfident. BoCo's Brother D was one of the diesels looking for Oliver when Oliver hid on that old quarry branch but never caught him, later arriving at Barrow-in-Furness due to running out of coal and water until Douglas saved him. However, he was allowed to keep his GWR number ''. He was assigned to work with on Duck 's branch line, " The Little Western ", hauling Isabel and a second autocoach, Dulcieboth of whom have also been restored to full GWR livery. When Oliver arrived on Sodor, he was not used to handling trucks, as he had operated a passenger branchline up until this point. While shunting his first ballast , an incident resulted in Oliver landing bunker-down in a turntable well. On his return from the Works, the trucks continually harassed him, teasing about his accident with an irritating song called "Pop Goes Old Ollie". With Toad's help, Oliver learned how to deal with them apart from one truck, S. Ruffeywho was torn apart. Since then, he has gained experience and sense. The story of Oliver's 'escape' is related by the Rev. Oliver has appeared in Enterprising Engines and, of course, the stories in the next book in the series, Oliver the Western Engine. He had a cameo appearance in the next volume, after which he was not seen again until Henry and the Express. Daisy the Diesel Railcar No. D1 is a unique diesel railcarpainted green with yellow lining similar to the livery of British Railways ' DMUs in the s. She was built in and arrived on Sodor specially for use on the Ffarquhar branch line Thomas ' branch line. She first appeared in the book Branch Line Engines. Daisy arrived on Sodor after Thomas had an accident and needed major repairs. She was lazy at first, refusing to do any work that didn't appeal to her and claiming that she was "highly sprung", and thought herself more clever than the other engines. But an incident with a bull and a stern warning from the Fat Controller showed her the error of her ways, and she is now a wiser and valuable addition to Thomas' branch line. Daisy is based on the Class diesel multiple units DMUsbut is a one-off, being a single railcar akin to the Class 'bubble cars'with a driving cab at each end. Although normally considered to be a ClassDaisy is always depicted with the distinctive valances around the buffer beams that distinguishes the earlier 'light-weight' prototype units made by Metro-Cammell. This is because the original model was built by amalgamating two of Tri-ang's R models. This would also account for Daisy's refusal to pull a milk van to the dairy, as the lightweight units were not strong enough to haul wagons. Diesel engines like Daisy were becoming a common sight on branch lines during the early 60's, and therefore it can be implied that Daisy's introduction into the The Railway Series No. 2: Thomas the Tank Engine is a reflection of the contemporary state of railways at the time. Some of the stories The Railway Series No. 2: Thomas the Tank Engine Daisy reflect problems that were faced by railway staff when it came to dealing with 'highly sprung' diesel engines in the earlier phases of their usurpment of steam. He is painted in a shade of green light green in the television series used by British Railways in the s. The Railway Series No. 2: Thomas the Tank Engine first appeared in the book Main Line Engines. BoCo was received with some hostility by Bill and Ben, who called him a "Diseasel" due to a misunderstanding the word "Diseasel" is also a portmanteau word combining the words "Disease" and "Diesel" and characters are heard commenting that "Coughs and sneezles spread diseasels"and by James, who called him a "buzzbox". Edward accepted him right away, and soon the others were won over. BoCo is a kind-hearted engine who enjoys a good joke, and he is always ready with a good word when needed. BoCo is a Metropolitan-Vickers Type 2 Class 28 diesel-electric locomotivenamed after its unusual wheel arrangementwhich is known as " Co-Bo ". The bogie beneath the power plant carries three powered axles 'Co' and the other carries two 'Bo'. This arrangement was designed to maximise the routes over which the engine could work. Another unusual feature of the Metrovick Co-Bo is the use of a two-stroke diesel power plant rather than the more standard four-stroke. BoCo's name is always spelt with a capital B and a capital C. The name, obviously, is derived from the fact that he is a Co-Bo diesel. Awdry decided that "BoCo" flowed better than "CoBo", and sounded more affectionate. In the Railway Series, BoCo carries his North Western Railway number 'D2', whereas in the television series he carries the number D, which is in the range of numbers assigned to the real "Metrovick" locomotives by British Railways. One of BoCo's brothers, numbered D was one of the diesels that was looking for Oliver back when Oliver was escaping from scrap. He was accompanied by another diesel engine, Dwho talked about taking over the railway, which D didn't like. Later in the same story, D suffered from a failed ejector The Railway Series No. 2: Thomas the Tank Engine had to be rescued by The Railway Series No. 2: Thomas the Tank Engine. He befriended his rescuer, and The Fat Controller decided to give him a second chance. Thomas the Tank Engine: The New Collection | Thomas the Tank Engine Wikia | Fandom

The Railway Series is a series of children's books about the railways of the fictional Island of Sodor. The books were created by the Reverend W. Awdrywho wrote the first stories in The final book in the series, Thomas and his Friendswas published in To prevent their son getting bored, Wilbert and his wife Margaret Awdry told him stories and nursery rhymes. Wilbert subsequently drew a picture of several engines standing in a row based on the rhyme and for fun gave them faces with various expressions. One sad-looking engine appealed to Christopher, as it shared his mood and he asked what his name was. Wilbert replied with the first to come to his head: Edward. Through a series of questions and answers, the story of Edward's Day Out was created. Christopher would constantly ask for the stories to be retold, even after he recovered and to ensure consistency between tellings, Wilbert wrote them down on the back of old church circulars. Margaret Awdry also liked the stories and told her husband to get them published, as she felt they were better than most children's books in circulation. Awdry was reluctant, but Margaret persisted and mentioned the stories in a letter to Wilbert's mother, Lucy, who replied that she knew the author Michael Barsley and asked that the stories be sent to her so she could forward them to him. At Margaret's insistence, Wilbert did so. Barsley's attempts to find a publisher were unsuccessful, so he showed the stories to his agent, Edith Ray Gregorson, who liked them and agreed to pursue the matter further. In October, Ward wrote to say that the stories would be published as one book entitled " The Three Railway Engines ", but that he required rough sketches for his illustrator to base his pictures on and a fourth story to finish off the book. While Awdry was annoyed at the requests, since Ward had already rejected his drawings, he agreed and wrote "Edward, Gordon and Henry". Awdry, while happy to see his book in print, was disappointed in the illustrations by William Middleton. After the publication of the book, The Railway Series No. 2: Thomas the Tank Engine wanted a model of Gordon; but this could not be done. Instead, Awdry made a model of a tank engine from odds and ends, painted it blue and gave it to Christopher as a Christmas present. Christopher christened the model engine Thomas. Then Christopher requested stories about Thomas and these stories would be published as Awdry's second and most famous book, Thomas the Tank Engine. After Thomas the Tank Engine, Awdry was finished with writing any more books. However, due to popular demand, Awdry pressed onward. By the time Awdry stopped writing inThe Railway Series numbered 26 books. Christopher subsequently added sixteen more books to the series, including the later two posthumous releases. The last book Thomas and his Friends was published in to commemorate Wilbert's century, particularity in the last story Centenary. And it was reverted to the original state in Christopher still wanted to write stories for children, so he founded Sodor Enterprises in with his wife, Diana Awdry. He offered the publisher the reprints of The Island of Sodor: Its People, History and Railwaysand The Railway Series No. 2: Thomas the Tank Engine to buy the copyright of this book, but were denied. Then, Thomas and Victoriawhich was intended to be published inwas published by Egmont in InThomas and his Friends was published and the series reached the final book. The Complete Collection compilations were released by various publishers in different years and countries, all containing the same 26 volumes. The Reverend W. Awdry planned to call his twenty-seventh volume Really Useful Enginesbut he never got to use The Railway Series No. 2: Thomas the Tank Engine following his retirement. Completely by coincidence, 's first publication had this title. From toannuals were written by the Rev. Awdry and from to by Christopher Awdry. In some cases, these stories expanded upon earlier Railway Series books. There have been several The Railway Series No. 2: Thomas the Tank Engine Series-related books published which were written by the The Railway Series No. 2: Thomas the Tank Engine. These books mainly feature the Island of Sodor, dealing with its history, geography and industry in far greater depth than could ever be discussed in the Railway Series stories themselves. Awdry and companion to the series. A series of books written to highlight rail safety. They were written partially due to Christopher Awdry's frustration at not being able to include a proper rail safety story in Thomas and the Great Railway Show. In this series of segments, Mr. Perkins and later Mr. Evans read the Railway Series stories. Each story is rewritten by Andrew Brenner and reillustrated by Loraine Marshall. One day he found the Railway Series books at an Oxford bookstore, purchased it for his son and they loved it. During this time they decided to translate the Railway Series. Tuttle Co. The Rev. Awdry was delighted to publish in Japan and sent a message to Japanese readers. This message was published in the foreword message of The Three Railway Engines and the front flaps of 26 books. The Railway Series No. 2: Thomas the Tank Engine remaining 11 books were published between August and February These original versions were discontinued around There have been "updates" such as expanding the size of the book, having the same character name as the television series and correcting old- fashioned phrases. After the first 15 publications, the remaining 11 books were scheduled to be published, but were cancelled. When the television series began broadcasting in Japan on 4th Octoberthe Railway Series became even more popular. Inandexhibitions of original artwork of the Railway Series, many sketches by and the original models were held in Japan. This wiki. This wiki All wikis. Sign In Don't have an account? Start a Wiki. Thomas the Tank Engine is an anthropomorphised fictional in The Railway Series books by the Reverend Wilbert Awdry and his son, Christopherpublished from Thomas is a blue steam engine and has a number 1 painted on his side. All of the locomotives in The Railway Series were based on prototypical engines; Thomas has origins in a cast metal made by Stewart Reidpath Essar, or S-R in Thomas's best friends are Percy and Toby. The programme became an award-winning hit The Railway Series No. 2: Thomas the Tank Engine the world, with a vast range of spinoff commercial products. When Awdry created Thomas, the engine existed only as a wooden toy made for his son Christopher. This engine looked rather different from the character in the books and television series, and carried the letters NW on its side tanks, which stood for "No Where" according to Awdry. Thomas wasn't originally based on a prototype ; rather, the initial stories were an accompaniment to the toy made for Christopher. Awdry selected a real locomotive for Payne to work from to create authenticity: a Billinton designed E2 Class of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway [6]. This may have been chosen simply because Awdry had a photograph to hand. Thomas as portrayed by Hornby and the TV series is based on one of six E2 class locomotives fitted with an extension to the front of the water tanks. This was an illustrator's mistake that was perpetuated in subsequent books. The accident, in Thomas Comes to Breakfast was partly devised as a means of correcting this. Thomas has always been shown with a curved front buffer beam in the television series. Payne was not credited for his illustrations at the time, and it is only since the publication of Brian Sibley 's The Thomas the Tank Engine Man that he has started to receive major recognition. It had often been erroneously assumed that C. Reginald Dalby created the character, as he was responsible for illustrating books 3—11 and repainting the illustrations of books 1 and 2. Thomas was described in the opening to "Thomas and Gordon", the first story in book number two, Thomas the Tank Engineas:. He The Railway Series No. 2: Thomas the Tank Engine six small wheels, a short stumpy funnel, a short stumpy boiler and a short stumpy dome. He was a fussy little engine, always pulling coaches about. Thomas arrived on Sodor shortly after he was built inwhen The Fat Controller bought the locomotive for a nominal sum to be a pilot engine at Vicarstown. Thomas was used initially as a station pilot engine in the first three stories in book 2, but longed for more important jobs such as pulling the express train like Gordon; his inexperience prevented this. In the fourth story, Thomas and the Breakdown TrainThomas rescues James and is rewarded with his own branch line. Thomas is generally depicted with a cheeky and even self-important personality. He believes that he should be more respected by the others, and he gets annoyed when he does not receive this respect. However, Percy and Toby are more than capable of standing up to him, and Annie and Clarabel often rebuke him. Thomas's on-screen appearances in the TV series were developed by . Conductor character. From toGeorge Carlin replaced Starr as both the storyteller and as Mr. Conductor for . Carlin also told the Thomas stories for Shining Time Station in In the Thomas stories were segments for Mr. Conductor's Thomas Talesagain featuring George Carlin. Alec Baldwin portrayed Mr. Michael Angelis narrated the series from to in the UK, while Michael Brandon narrated the series from to in the US. From tothe series was narrated by Mark Moraghan until the franchise's reboot inwhen the episodes were told from Thomas's point of view. Thomas's personality was originally faithful to the character of the books. As the show branched away from the novels however, modifications were made. Thomas became noticeably less arrogant and self-absorbed, developing a more friendly, altruistic and happy go lucky if still rather over-excitable side. He also no longer appears to be limited to his branch line and seems to work all over Sodor. These changes in his personality and duties are a result of his "star" status. He is the most popular character in the series, and therefore he has the largest number of appearances, appearing in all of the DVD specials and the movie Thomas and the Magic Railroad. The real life LBSC no. Thomas had his genesis, like Winnie-the-Poohin a toy for a small child, both coincidentally named Christopher. A wooden push-along toy from the early s is the original Thomas made by the Reverend Awdry out of a The Railway Series No. 2: Thomas the Tank Engine of broomstick for his son Christopher. This engine looked rather different from the character in the books and television series and was based on an LNER Class J50 with smaller side tanks and splashers. Christopher Awdry lost this model when he The Railway Series No. 2: Thomas the Tank Engine in the US, although it was recreated for the 70th Anniversary. In the Thomas Annual, Awdry wrote:. Thomas was one of Stewart Reidpath's standard models with a heavy, cast white metal body, and was fitted with his "Essar" chassis and motor. Stewart Reidpath is now dead, and his motors, let alone spare parts for them, have been unobtainable for years; but Thomas still keeps going! He is, as you might expect from his age, a temperamental old gentleman, and has to be driven very carefully indeed. Awdry's requested models, to which Lines Bros. This was a 00 gauge range of model railway train sets and models which they made for the next 30 years. The Railway Series No. 2: Thomas the Tank Engine of the The Railway Series No. 2: Thomas the Tank Engine in the 'Railway Series' books were thus modelled with faces by Hornby, including characters added for the The Railway Series No. 2: Thomas the Tank Engine series. They also supplied suitable coaches, wagons and lineside buildings within the series. Thomas was the only fictional character included in the Independent on Sunday 's " Happy List ", recognised alongside 98 real-life adults and a therapy dog for making Britain a better and happier place. Thomas has been referenced, featured and parodied in popular culture. Inhe was parodied on ITV 's Spitting Image where he The Railway Series No. 2: Thomas the Tank Engine portrayed as a drunk who went "completely off the rails. Bobby Davro provided the narration by impersonating Ringo Starr. The skit was called "Blow Some Steam. Thomas was voiced by Daniel Radcliffe. A tank-themed version of Thomas appears as an amusement park prop in the anime feature Girls und Panzer der Film. In the film's climactic battle, Ant-Man and Yellowjacket fight atop Thomas while in their insect sizes until Yellowjacket derails Thomas off the model train tracks and throws him onto a windowsill. An accident during the fight results in Thomas suddenly growing to the size of a real train and demolishing a large portion of Ant-Man's daughter's house before falling on top of a police car. Video game players have frequently modified released games to include Thomas and other characters, typically by replacing a boss character with Thomas and using sounds and music from the show. One of the first popular efforts was replacing dragons with engines and trucks in the game The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim inand Thomas has since been incorporated into other games like Grand Theft Auto VSonic the Hedgehog and the Resident Evil 2 remake.
