WEEK COMMENCING 23 SEPTEMBER 2018 Harvest Thanksgiving TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B DIVINE OFFICE Week 1 DEVOTION TO THE FIVE WOUNDS OF CHRIST Last week we celebrated the Feasts of the Triumph of the Cross and of Our Lady of Sorrows. It would, therefore, seem timely to respond to Pope Francis’ recent call to revive the centuries-old devotion to the of Christ. Throughout his pontificate, the Pope has offered meditations on ’ wounds and, at the Angelus address on 18 March 2018, he recommended this devotion to the thousands of people in St Peter’s Square: “Do not forget this: look at the , but to look within it. There is this beautiful devotion to pray an Our Father for each one of the five wounds: when we pray that Our Father, we seek to enter through Jesus’ wounds inside, inside, right to His heart. And there we will learn the great wisdom of Christ’s mystery, the great wisdom of the cross.” It is a beautiful devotion - one that recognises the great pain that Jesus suffered for each one of us - and invokes His mercy to wash away our sins. Scriptural Basis for the Devotion: One of the main scriptural sources for this devotion, other than the texts that describe Christ’s Passion, is a passage from the first letter of St Peter: “He Himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By His wounds, you have been healed” (1 Peter 2:24). History of the Devotion: Devotion to the Wounds of Christ became popular in the 12th and 13th and the centuries, when Christians began to rediscover the Holy Land and were interested in meditating Wounds of Christ, displayed on the . St (1090–1153) gave a homily that highlighted on a Cross, c.1495 the Wounds of Christ, which became a principal text in support of this devotion. The wounds of Christ were narrowed down to the Five Holy Wounds: Jesus’ right hand, left hand, right foot, left foot and side. (see picture above) The : St John is said to have appeared to Pope Boniface II (d.532) and revealed a special Mass - the Golden Mass - celebrated in honour of Christ's Five Wounds. St (1303–1373) prayed 15 prayers each day in honour of each of Christ’s wounds, totalling 5,475 over a year - one each for almost all of the 5,480 wounds received, as revealed to her in private revelation. 15 Prayers of St Bridget are still prayed today. Devotion to Christ’s 5 main wounds was practiced by many saints. St (1194-1253) developed a strong devotion, as did St (1240-1298), St (1256–1301), and St (1696–1787) in his Little Chaplet. In 1823, and again in 1851, a Corona, or of the Five Wounds was approved by the Holy See, which has 5 divisions, each with 5 Glories in honour of Christ's Wounds and one Ave in commemoration of the Sorrowful Mother. Polish and mystic, St (1905–1938), who’s visions of Christ compelled her to promote devotion to the , wrote in her diary that Jesus told her, “When it seems to you that your suffering exceeds your strength, contemplate my wounds.” Pope Francis’s Thoughts on the Devotion has links with the meditations of St Bernard of Clairvaux and with the popular prayer, or Soul of Christ. St Bernard’s reflection includes the line: “Where have your love, your mercy, your compassion shone out more luminously than in your wounds, sweet, gentle Lord of mercy?” And the Anima Christi includes the plea to Jesus: “Within your wounds hide me.” The Anima Christi is a prayer frequently said after Holy Communion, on which the words of the traditional Catholic Hymn, Soul of My Saviour is based. Mercy is a central theme of Pope Francis’s pontificate, and “the gift of shame,” something the Pope mentions often. Speaking to the Congregation of the Sacred , the Pope adapted the Anima Christi prayer: “Within your wounds hide me. Hide me from my shame. Hide me from the wrath of the Father. Hide me from my misery. But in your wounds.” Speaking of the tenderness of God, Pope Francis reflected on how when a child gets hurt, his or her parents asks to see the scratch or the bruise: they kiss it and say, “all better”. Pope Francis imagines God doing the same - God wants to see the wounds of his children - to touch them and heal them. “There, in the encounter of our wounds with the wounds of the Lord, which was the price of our salvation, there is the tenderness of God.” While visiting priests and religious in Chile, he told them that wounds are not something we should hide from God or from others. In fact, recognising one’s own wounds, and the wounded-ness of the Church, is the first step to being able to see and treat the wounds of others. After the resurrection: “Jesus Christ does not appear to his disciples without his wounds; those very wounds enabled Thomas to profess his faith”, said the Pope. “We are not asked to ignore or hide our wounds… A church with wounds can understand the wounds of today’s world and make them her own, - suffering with them, accompanying them and seeking to heal them. A wounded church does not make herself the centre of things, does not believe that she is perfect, but puts at the centre the one who can heal those wounds, whose name is Jesus Christ… In Jesus, our wounds are risen. They inspire solidarity; they help us to tear down the walls that enclose us in elitism and they impel us to build bridges and to encounter all those yearning for that merciful love which Christ alone can give.” Continued on back page MASS TIMES WEEK COMMENCING 23 SEPTEMBER 2018 25TH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME Saturday Vigil 22 6.30pm St Edward’s See printed copy for Mass Intentions Sunday 23 9.30am St Peter’s (Polish) 10am St Joseph’s 11.30am St Peter’s 5pm St Peter’s Monday 24 6.30pm St Edward’s Our Lady of Walsingham

Two notable Saints who have received the Stigmata are St and St (Padre) Pio. Theology: The five wounds were the channels through which Christ's blood was spilled. This "precious blood" sealed for Christians a new covenant to replace the old covenant of Moses. Whereas once a sacrificial lamb was offered to God in atonement for sins, now divine blood from the only victim pure enough to atone for all of humanity's transgressions was offered. Thus, Christ's death was a perfect sacrifice that destroyed the power of sin, and therefore death, over humanity. Special significance is given to the lance wound from which flowed blood and water. The blood is linked with the Eucharist received SUNDAY SMILE: Little Johnny was very at Masses, and the water to the cleansing of original sin at baptism (the nervous and anxious about his 1st two sacraments believed to be necessary to achieve eternal life).
