A YEAR IN PHOTOGRAPHY MAGNUM ARCHIVE EDITED BY MAGNUM PHOTOS Founded by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Magnum Photos is an iconic international photographic cooperative whose members have captured the major historical events of their times, as well as private and intimate moments. A year’s worth of these images is offered in this beautiful book that features full page reproductions organized to reflect what Cartier-Bresson himself declared a “community of thought, a shared human quality, a curiosity about what is going on in the world, a respect for what is going on and a desire to transcribe it visually.” Nearly 70 photographers are represented with five to six images and the current Magnum members have selected the photographs that they consider to best represent their own output. Opposite each photograph is a page reserved for special dates, reflections, and notes. Published in an appealing and impressively-sized format, running more than 700 pages, this book includes images that make history both individual and universal. FRIDA KAHLO FACE TO FACE JUDY CHICAGO AND FRANCES BORZELLO For decades Judy Chicago has worked tirelessly to ensure that women’s artistic achievements become a permanent part of our cultural heritage. In this sumptuous, large format book, she turns her attention to the work of Frida Kahlo, one of the world’s most revered female painters. In this volume Chicago, together with her collaborator, art historian Frances Borzello, has handpicked a selection of Kahlo’s work, a hundred portraits that speak to the full spectrum of women’s experience. The result is a fascinating “conversation” between two artistic icons, one that is further enhanced by a dialogue between Chicago and Borzello, an authority on women’s portraiture. The book features each work on its own spread, facing commentary by Chicago and Borzello. Essays explore Kahlo’s many facets: woman, artist, historical figure, and inspiration. Designed to evoke a Mexican retablo , or altarpiece, this volume reframes Frida Kahlo for a contemporary audience. JUDY CHICAGO is an artist, author, feminist, and educator whose career spans four decades. Her best-known work, The Dinner Party , is a monumental multimedia project that has been seen by more than one million viewers. FRANCES BORZELLO is a London-based art historian who has written extensively on cultural and gender issues. 272 pages with 160 illustrations, 120 in color Hardcover 1 1 11 /2 x 13 /2 in. / 29 x 34 cm 978-3-7913-4360-0 Frida Kahlo, Self Portrait with Small Monkey , 1945. © ARS, NY. This is the gallery’s first solo exhibition of the artist who has a longstanding studio practice on Long Island’s East End, as well as in New York and Abu Dhabi where he is a professor at both NYU Steinhardt and NYU Abu Dhabi. A separate press release is available for the concurrent exhibition, GUSTAVO BONEVARDI New Watercolors. Gold Gems Balls highlights selected paintings on plywood and sculpture dating from 1984 to 1990 when John Torreano was among a group of American artists using wood in unprecedented ways to blur the distinction between painting and sculpture. Integral to his work in all mediums is a fascination with cosmological imagery and the paradox between illusionism and the physicality of his working materials. Inset into his painted reliefs and sculptures, luminous acrylic gems, painted and natural wood spheres, and routered hollows enhance the surface plane to suggest stars and planets or sheer abstract pictorial space. Throughout, in a process that incorporates painting, cutting, sanding and assemblage, beauty and rougher aesthetics converge in a seductive merging of apparent opposites.

Some are set wholly in one country, while others form a bridge between the two. Uniting them is a shared attention to memory, isolation, and loss. In their own idiosyncratic ways, each of the characters in these small fictions is struggling for human connection in a hostile and lonely world. • John Torreano: the Big Picture September 3 — January 29, 2021 — Painting from the Universe
Fall Exhibition 2020 John Torreano: The Big Picture September 3 — January 29, 2021 — Painting From The Universe Guest curated by Julie Augur John Torreano: The Big Picture – Painting From The Universe As you enter John Torreano’s exhibition, you are entering various constellations and formations of the universe, places we cannot see without a high-powered telescope. These paintings are big. How else can we relate to the hugeness out there? Some of the works are violent, as in Edge, portraying explosive happenings we are not aware of, and some are calm, as in A Star(s) is Born with its womblike structure birthing stars. Gases in Omega Swan, the largest work in the exhibition, depicts the ongoing movement of swirling gases and clouds in one of the many formations buried in the universe. Two of the works in the West Gallery, Swarm and Double Spin, are examples of Torreano’s venture into the abstract. In these works, he uses gems and balls in a different way but relates them to the pieces inspired by photographs from the Hubble Space Telescope. Swarm has a scattered feeling with its star-like gems and various white orbits smashing into each other, while Double Spin has the darkness of the universe with its mysterious orbs circling about, threatening to collide. The East Gallery features Torreano’s drawings as well as paintings. The paintings are abstractions employing the jewels/gems, balls and paint in a free-form manner, but the titles still relate to formations in the universe. Torreano takes the same approach with the drawings.

“When we escape from the place we spend most of our time . we start thinking about obscure possibilities . that never would have occurred to us if we’d stayed back on the farm.” —Jonah Lerner 1 In his 2009 essay about the transformative power of travel, science writer Jonah Lerner concludes, “When we get home, home is still the same. But something in our mind has been changed, and that changes everything.” The same thing can be said about listening to music, especially music that causes you to lose your bearings in a territory that cannot be fenced into any familiar category. The Celestial Septet, comprising the Nels Cline Singers and Rova Saxophone Quartet, is a vehicle for time and space travel through dense, narrow thickets and airy, wide expanses of boundary-blurred extrapolations of jazz, rock, late-20th-century European modernism and American minimalism, and 21st-century postmodern fusions. The trip is challenging, but the open-minded listener/traveler cannot help but come through the experience with new perspectives on sound and music. As individual entities, the Singers and Rova ramble in musical regions that have been variously and inadequately called “avant-garde,” “creative,” “improvised,” “new,” “noise,” and “free.” Such labels are more convenient than instructive. Similarly, the groups’ respective names are somewhat deceptive and limited when it comes to describing the configurations of personnel and instrumentation. The singer-less Singers—Nels Cline, Devin Hoff, and Scott Amendola—are ostensibly a guitar-bass-drums trio. But the approaches taken by Cline on acoustic and electric guitars and various effects, Hoff on acoustic contrabass, and Amendola on drum kit, percussion, live electronics, and effects expand the threesome’s musical possibilities exponentially.
