(All times Central...*GLVC game) 2014 MISSOURI S&T FOOTBALL 2 S&T Head Coach Tyler Fenwick: Tyler Fenwick is in his second season at the helm of Missouri S&T’s football program after leading the Miners to a 6-5 mark in 2013. Fenwick, the 19th head coach in the history of the S&T program, was the fi rst to lead the Miners to a winning season in his fi rst year as head coach since 1914.

Fenwick came to S&T after a successful six-season stint as offensive coordinator at Missouri Western; the Griffons played in the post- season in each of those six years, including an appearance in the NCAA Division II quarterfi nals in 2012. MWSU was 53-18 during the six years Fenwick served on its staff. He is a native of Los Angeles, Calif. and also coached at Occidental College in California for four years and at Minnesota State University at Moorhead for a year before joining the staff at Missouri Western. He played collegiately as a wide receiver at Los Angeles Valley College and at the University of New Mexico.

Series history with McKendree: The Miners have lost just once to McKendree in the 11 previous meetings, of which most of them took place prior to the teams start- ing to play as GLVC foes in 2012. S&T won eight of the fi rst nine matchups that took place between 1924 and 1936, then won 31-0 in Lebanon on Sept. 15, 2012 and 31-21 in Rolla late last season. In last year’s game, the Miners led 10-7 at halftime and made a goal line stand on McKendree’s opening possession of the second half; they followed that up with a 99-yard scoring drive that sparked a decisive 21-point outburst in the third quarter.

Defensively speaking: Since the start of the the 2011 season (40 games), Missouri S&T’s defense has recorded 140 quarterback sacks, while holding its opponents to an average of 119.2 yards per game on the ground, a completion percentage of 51.8 percent through the air and have intercepted 61 passes. Last year, S&T held its 11 foes to an average of 124.7 rushing yards per game -- and just 98 per contest over the last nine games -- with 30 sacks and a completion mark of barely over 50 percent for the season. Miner opponents have completed just 50.7 percent of their throws this season.

Setting the records straight: Missouri S&T has found its way into both the NCAA Division II and GLVC record books over the fi rst seven weeks of the 2014 season. The record performances began on Sept. 13 at Midwestern State by wide receiver Spencer Elrod, as he accumulated 226 yards in kick- off returns that included a runback of the game’s opening kickoff for a touchdown. That 91-yard play marked the third time on record at S&T and fi rst time in GLVC history that the opening kickoff of the game was returned for a score.

Two weeks later at Southwest Baptist, the defense got into the record-setting mode by tying the NCAA Division II record and breaking the school and GLVC marks with 14 quarterback sacks. The NCAA mark was originally set by North Dakota in 2001, then tied by Shaw in 2008 and Johnson C. Smith last year.

Then in the Oct. 11 win over Lindenwood-Belleville, the Miners recorded their longest play from scrimmage in school history and tied the GLVC’s longest play ever when Lamar Wilkes connected with Melvin Stovall on a 95-yard scoring pass in the third quarter. The play broke a mark of 93 yards previously set by Joe Knapp and Elliot Jackson in the 1995 season fi nale against Missouri Western and tied the longest pass play in GLVC history that was set by Central State’s Michael Wilson and Jeremey Turner in 2012.

Quick Hits on McKendree:

• The Bearcats broke into the win column for the fi rst time in the 2014 season last week, rallying in the second half for a 53-43 win at Southwest Baptist. McKendree trailed 29-21 at the half, but outscored SBU 32-14 over the fi nal 30 minutes that included a stretch of four touchdowns in fi ve possessions. McKendree comes in at 1-6 overall and 1-3 in the GLVC.

• Quarterback Isaac Fisher -- who made his fi rst career appearance two seasons ago during the Miners’ last visit to McKendree and took over as the Bearcats’ starting quarterback -- has completed 59.2 percent of his passes for 1,677 yards and 11 scores, while leading them in rushing as well with 365 yards and four touchdowns. Fisher had 103 yards on the ground, threw for 243 and accounted for four touchdowns in Saturday’s win.

• Cameron James is the top receiver for the Bearcats with 39 receptions for 234 yards, while Dewayne Gatti has caught 28 for 376 yards; McKendree has seven receivers with at least 10 catches. Ryan Herring has rushed for 282 yards and four scores.

• On the defensive side, linebacker A.J. Wentland leads McKendree in tackles with 82, while Alec Gerdes has been in on 49 stops. Defensive end Lucky Baar, named Monday as the GLVC’s “Defensive Player of the Week,” has team highs in sacks with six and tackles behind the line of scrimmage with 11. McKendree has allowed a league-high 43.4 points per game this year.

The 1,000-Yard Club: Missouri S&T senior Leon Moody reached the 1,000-yard mark in career reception yardage during the season opener at Chadron State, while Melvin Stovall reached that plateau against Truman State. Those two, along with Nick Taylor, are among three S&T players with over 1,000 all-purpose yards in a Miner uniform.

Stovall has 1,387 receiving yards through seven weeks of the 2014 season, while Moody’s total stands at 1,196. Taylor is closing in on that mark, as he currently has 964 (36 away). No Miner team in history has ever had three 1,000-yard receivers (on a career basis) playing together at the same time.

Chasing Down the Sack Mark: S&T senior Freddy Dugard is looking to reach the top of the Miner charts for quarterback sacks, entering play Saturday just fi ve and one-half in back of John Frerking’s record of 29. Dugard has 25.5 sacks in his S&T career that started on the fi eld in 2010.

In addition, Daleroy Davey -- with 13 career sacks -- moved into the top ten on the career list in last week’s game and Dan Mauszycki is on the cusp with 12.5 sacks.
