FACT SHEET: Mental Health and Addiction Services – Central Health Department of Community Health and Services

• Doorways Walk-In Counselling is available in 8 communities (, Gander, Grand Fall-Windsor, , Springdale, St. Alban’s, Botwood and Glovertown) in Central Region, with further expansion planned for Winter of 2020.

• Doorways is available 5 days a week in Gander and Grand Falls-Windsor. Doorways serves as a point of access for services and a point of triage when people are looking for further supports.

• Telehealth is used to support access to community-based counselling and Doorways Walk-In Services.

• Central Triage (1-844-353-3330) provides a point of telephone access and self- referral for the entire region, operating Monday to Friday. Central Triage connects clients with a range of services from self-help to more intensive-based community services. Call 1-844-353-3330

• Referrals for psychiatry have integrated with Central Triage to align with stepped care.

• Clients waiting for counselling services are offered access to a number of other supports (in lieu of or in addition to counselling services) including; Doorways Walk-In Counselling, Telehealth, TAO, Strongest Families, ICAN, etc.

• Clinical staff visit the Bishops Falls Correctional Centre weekly and provide a range of services from counselling, health promotion, to psychological assessment. Expansion of clinical services is underway to include therapeutic groups.

• The In-patient psychiatric unit (Unit 2E) is located at the Central Regional Health Center in Grand Falls Windsor. Total of 20 beds.

• Juniper Place Therapeutic Residence is a voluntary program designed for adults with complex mental health issues or addictions. It is a 3-bedroom home located in Grand Falls Windsor.

• The Mobile Crisis Response Team is being established in Grand Falls Windsor and Gander. The hours of service are 10am to 10pm, 7 days a week. When the staff are not on a call with the RCMP they will be working in the ER department offering mental health and addictions support for the clients and their families.

• Case Management Services are currently being offered across the region with office locations in: o Springdale o Baie Verte o Lewisporte o Glovertown (new) o Brookfield o Gander (2 case managers currently servicing this area – this team will grow and become a Flexible Assertive Community Treatment Team)

• The ACT Team in Grand Falls – Windsor continues to provide services to clients with more complex mental health concerns. This team services approximately a 50 km radius. We are also moving towards adopting a Flexible Assertive Community Treatment approach to care.

• There is a suite of e-Mental Health technology available province-wide, including: o Therapy Assistance Online (TAO) o Bridge the gapp o BreathingRoom™ o MindWell-U 30-Day Mindfulness Challenge o Strongest Families Institute’s anxiety and behavioural health programs for children aged 3-17 o Strongest Families Institute’s I CAN (Conquer Anxiety and Nervousness) program for young adults ages 18-30

• The Hope Valley Center is a Provincial Inpatient Treatment Center for youth with substance use issues. There are 12 beds at the Center—8 Long Term treatment beds and 4 Withdrawal Management beds. There is currently no waitlist for services.

• Central Health; Mental Health & Addictions has a Therapeutic Service Dog Program, primarily located at the Hope Valley Center. This program has recently expanded to other programs such as; Community, Mental Health & Addictions, Counseling, Long Term Care and to various Departments of our regional referral center in GFW; CNRHC.

• The Health Promotion & Prevention Program works with Central Health and other community groups to support prevention efforts and information sharing throughout the region. As part of this program, the Early Youth Outreach Staff work closely with more rural communities and schools towards Mental Health & Addictions Promotion & Prevention.

• Central Health has established an Opioid Dependency Treatment hub in Gander. This clinic began operating on March 26, 2019. Work is currently underway to expand this service in Gander and to develop a second hub in GFW. There are currently 55 clients receiving service from the Gander Hub.

• Central Health Mental Health and Addictions provides Case Management services for youth with complex Mental Health and Addictions needs. As there is only one position in the region, the Youth Case Manager, in addition to providing direct supports and services to youth, also works with other staff of the Mental Health & Addictions Teams across the region to provide services.
