Blumhouse continues its true docuseries tradition with projects in production for FX, Sundance and Oxygen. Blumhouse Television is the latest venture from Jason Blum, founder of Blumhouse Productions, which is widely-recognized for its pioneering model of producing high-quality micro-budget films including The Purge, Get Out, BlacKkKlansman and Halloween. Type of content that Blumhouse is looking for: ❏ Genre and Horror – but not limited to just scary stories. CBC Docs POV Charlotte Engel, Executive in Charge of Production, Unscripted Content - CBC Docs CBC Docs POV series gets to the heart of issues that matter to Canadians. Celebrating the great Canadian tradition of documentary, Canada’s best filmmakers bring us films with compelling characters, harrowing tales and unforgettable moments. With unique and often unexpected access, these stories will ignite discussions and open dialogues about issues relevant in today’s society. We’re searching for challenging and outspoken documentaries that represent a range of ideas, opinions, voices and tone. We are also currently looking for high impact limited series that get at bigger issues, of universal interest, with a unique way into the subject matter. These have international partners to finance it like Enslaved. These would feature a profile host/on camera person who has meaningful and authentic connection to the subject matter. CBC Drama Nicole Mendes, Executive in Charge of Production, Drama The CBC Drama team is looking for accessible, episodic storytelling that resonates with our core CBC audience, that can air between the hours of 7:00pm–10:00pm. We are looking for series that have a distinct Canadian story to tell or unique Canadian viewpoint. ‘Distinct’ means that you probably wouldn't see the same content on another network. ‘Unique’ implies that you probably couldn’t air this anywhere but Canada. Your proposal should be a character-driven series with a strong story engine that will appeal to Canadians. Unfolding Time to Configure a Collective Entity: Alternative Digital Movies as Malaysian National Cinema A dissertation presented to the faculty of the College of Fine Arts of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Hsin-ning Chang April 2017 © 2017 Hsin-ning Chang. All Rights Reserved. 2 This dissertation titled Unfolding Time to Configure a Collective Entity: Alternative Digital Movies as Malaysian National Cinema by HSIN-NING CHANG has been approved for Interdisciplinary Arts and the College of Fine Arts by Erin Schlumpf Visiting Assistant Professor of Film Studies Elizabeth Sayrs Interim Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 ABSTRACT CHANG, HSIN-NING, Ph.D., April 2017, Interdisciplinary Arts Unfolding Time to Configure a Collective Entity: Alternative Digital Movies as Malaysian National Cinema Director of dissertation: Erin Schlumpf This dissertation argues that the alternative digital movies that emerged in the early 21st century Malaysia have become a part of the Malaysian national cinema. This group of movies includes independent feature-length films, documentaries, short and experimental films and videos. They closely engage with the unique conditions of Malaysia’s economic development, ethnic relationships, and cultural practices, which together comprise significant understandings of the nationhood of Malaysia. The analyses and discussions of the content and practices of these films allow us not only to recognize the economic, social, and historical circumstances of Malaysia, but we also find how these movies reread and rework the existed imagination of the nation, and then actively contribute in configuring the collective entity of Malaysia. 4 DEDICATION To parents, family, friends, and cats in my life 5 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my advisor, Prof.

“No Reason to Be Seen”: Cinema, Exploitation, and the Political by Gordon Sullivan B.A., University of Central Florida, 2004 M.A., North Carolina State University, 2007 Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of The Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Pittsburgh 2017 UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH THE KENNETH P. Following the work of Peter Brooks on melodrama, the exploitation film is a mode concerned with spectacular violence and its relationship to the political, as defined by French philosopher Jacques Rancière. For Rancière, the political is an “intervention into the visible and sayable,” where members of a community who are otherwise uncounted come to be seen as part of the community through a “redistribution of the sensible.” This aesthetic rupture allows the demands of the formerly-invisible to be seen and considered. We can see this operation at work in the exploitation film, and by investigating a series of exploitation auteurs, we can augment our understanding of what Rancière means by the political.
