GARDEN TALK, “PLANNING YOUR VEGETABLE GARDEN” on SATURDAY, APRIL 25th from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Ossining Organic Community Garden in Cedar Lane Park. Green Building Regulations Work Committee The Village of Ossining is looking for five people to serve on the Village’s Green Building Regulations Work Committee. This committee will be a work committee. The committee will meet bimonthly and this project is anticipated to take a little over a year to complete. It is anticipated that a committee member will be able to attend the meetings. Access to e-mail is a must. People with knowledge in the development, environmental, real estate, and legal fields are encouraged to apply. Mike Risko Music at 144 Croton Ave in Ossining is offering a half day Summer Arts Program during the weeks of 7/6 and/or 7/13 for kids in grades 1-5. Village of Ossining Water Department Notice Hydrant Flushing Schedule The Village of Ossining Water Department will start their semiannual hydrant-flushing program on Monday evening, April 6, 2015. Flushing of hydrants will be performed between 9:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. in order to minimize disruptions to our residents. The entire hydrant-flushing program will take approximately five weeks to complete. As the flushing of hydrants takes place closer to your home, you may notice some discoloration in your water first thing in the morning. Do not be alarmed. Just run your water for a short period of time and it should clear up. If the discoloration persists, please notify the Water Department at 941-6111.

Sparta Walking Tours scheduled for April 19 The first of this year’s walking tours of the historic Sparta neighborhood at the south end of Ossining will be held on Sunday, April 19.The tour will begin at the Jug Tavern (Rockledge Avenue and Revolutionary Road, behind the CVS) at 1 p.m. with a showing of the video “The Battle for Sparta.” Participants will then walk about six blocks through the neighborhood learning about the historic homes in the landmarked district; the tour will end at around 3 p.m.Dr. Alan Stahl, a neighborhood resident and former president of the Jug Tavern, who teaches in the History Department of Princeton University, will lead the tour. The other dates scheduled for 2015 are all Sundays: May 24, June 21, July 19, August 23, September 13, and October 18; check the Jug Tavern website (www.jugtavern.org) for updates. Ferry Sloops Presents: "The Hudson River School of Painting" At the next Ferry Sloops meeting on Wednesday, May 6, 7:30PM at Shattemuc Yacht Club, Cynthia Andersen will present a multi-media lecture on "The Hudson River School of Painting". Learn about The Hudson River School, a mid-19th century American art movement by a group of landscape painters, whose aesthetic vision was influenced by romanticism. Their paintings depict the Hudson River Valley and the surrounding area, as well as the Catskill Mountains, Adirondack Mountains, and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Their mission was to create an "American" landscape vision and literary voice based on the exploration of Nature - the natural world defined as a resource for spiritual renewal and as an expression of national and cultural identity. Cynthia Andersen is a Teacher/Consultant for the Visually Impaired for the Ossining School District. She earned her B.A. from Hunter College, majoring in History with a concentration in Early American Culture, and a Masters degree in Education and Art History. Cynthia, an amateur painter, has been researching, writing and lecturing about the Hudson River School of Painting for more than ten years. Admission is FREE and open to the public. The Ossining Story: A Bicentennial Celebration 1813–2013 is still available for purchase. This special-edition souvenir journal commemorated Ossining’s 200th birthday, honoring its past and present. Ossining became the first incorporated village in Westchester County in 1813, when it was still known as Sing Sing. The journal is the culmination of the work of many Ossining residents who cherish our village’s history. Its managing editor, Martha Mesiti, Town Historian and a lifelong resident, reached out to the organizations that comprise Ossining’s vibrant community to share their histories. Over 60 groups responded, including the Police and Fire Departments, houses of worship, educational groups, military groups, historical organizations, social and service groups, and more. Mesiti also commissioned articles of historic interest from local authors and historians, covering such topics as the village’s unique architecture, Sing Sing marble, Sing Sing prison, and historic personalities like the Old Leather Man. Maryknoll Speakers Series: Peace Activist, Lay Theologian Jim Forest Discusses The Concept Of “Loving Our Enemies” In A Violent World In a world filled with conflict and hatred, the ability to love one’s enemies often seems irrational if not impossible. However, embracing enemies is basic to Christianity. It is the message Jesus taught through direct instruction, through parables and by example. Internationally renowned educator, peace activist, lay theologian and spiritual writer Jim Forest will speak about "Loving Our Enemies" on Sunday, April 19, at 2:30 p.m. as part of the spring Maryknoll Speakers Series. Mr. Forest’s presentation will be held at the Maryknoll Mission Center at 55 Ryder Road in Ossining. Presented by the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, the series is free and open to the public. Mr. Forest’s long career has included working relationships with Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker, with Trappist monk Thomas Merton and with Buddhist leader Thich Nhat Hanh. Mr. Forest’s books have included several published by Orbis Books, the publishing division of the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers. These books include All is Grace: A Biography of Dorothy Day, Living with Wisdom: A Life of Thomas Merton, Praying with Icons and Loving Our Enemies. Exploring a New Way to “Do Justice” Will be Focus of Mission Institute Program “Increasing inequality, pervasive violence, divisive politics...what has all of our work for social justice meant?” wonders Sister Nancy Sylvester, IHM, founder of the Institute for Communal Contemplation and Dialogue, Detroit, MI. The instructor for Maryknoll Mission Institute’s upcoming five-day program, “Upstart Spring: Imagine Justice… Exploration into God,” to be held May 10-15, at Maryknoll Sisters Center, 10 Pinesbridge Road, Ossining, Sister Nancy, will help participants to explore this question by challenging them to “deepen (their) contemplative practice communally and imagine new ways of being with each other, with all beings on Earth and with the Divine.” The group will also explore what it means to exercise contemplative power and imagine doing justice in new ways. Past president of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, Sister Nancy serves as president of the Institute and executive director of its major project, Engaging Impasse: Circlues of Contemplation and Dialogue® and its various programs, including Transformation in a Time of Uncertainty. She has served as an advisor on the United States Bishops’ International Policy Committee and a member of the board of the National Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice, where she was a founding member. Nancy holds a master’s degree in human development, with a concentration in economics and theology, from St. Mary’s University, Winona, MN, and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and political science from St. Louis University. On the same day that Maryknoll welcomes Mr. Forest, the Maryknoll Museum of Living Mission and the Maryknoll Gift Shop will be open to the public 1-5 p.m. A new temporary exhibit in the museum features the path to canonization for four Maryknoll priests. Two of the priests are the Maryknoll co-founders, Bishop James A. Walsh and Father Thomas F. Price. The other two priests are New Yorkers, Bishop Francis X. Ford from Brooklyn and Maryknoll’s first seminarian, and Staten Island’s Father Vincent R. Capodanno, a recipient of the Medal of Honor who was killed while serving as a military chaplain in Vietnam.
