2 www.stopout.org.nz . The First Word My blood is red… and gold! A special welcome to our “Old Timers”. It’s a special day on our calendar when those stalwarts of the club join us for a day of remembrance. And on Sunday Jim Blair celebrates his 80th with a game that includes many local legends from our region. See Pg 15 for the team lists! And why not come on down to Hutt Park tomorrow for a bit of fun and watch the silky skills, albeit a bit rusty, of some of our old timers!

Tomorrow also sees the annual Wynton Rufer tournament for local junior payers take place at

Hutt Park. Over the next 2 weekends, 80 odd teams of 6 >10 year olds compete in a tournament where enjoyment and participation are the focus. Oh and yeah you are allowed to go out and win!

So to today’s game. After a curly start to the year with a couple of losses we have now gone six games without defeat including a couple of victories. So the side is starting to gel, building those important combinations, and we’re starting to hit the back of the net with 7 in our last two league games and 11 in cup games.

Our visitors today Olympic Reserves have had a good start to their first year in Capital Premier and are comfortably placed in the top half of the league. And unlike most teams in this league Besim is thankfully playing against a club that also looks to play attractive short passing football. Here’s hoping for an exciting free-flowing game with goals galore. Enjoy! Chris Canton, President

Round 6 vs Western Suburbs 4-0 win (SBlackburn JMason BWinyard SGulley)

Western Suburbs came to Hutt Park on a sunny day with our No 1 field in very good condition despite a lot of rain during the week. We desperately needed 3 points to Cap Premier P W D L GF GA Pt get our season back on track and 6 5 0 1 22 6 15 our first half display was excellent. Besim’s match reports cont... Rnd 7 vs Wgtn Utd 3-3 (Gulley Winyard Blackburn) Our most important game of the season was played on a soggy against current league leaders United. United started strongly and full of confidence and went a goal up after we failed to clear our lines in our box and a deflected shot beat Vinnie. Vinnie then kept us in the game pulling off key saves as we went in at halftime only 1-0 down.

The second half started well for us and a lot of possession. We moved the ball around quickly and got in behind United. Against the run of play though we conceded our second after failing to communicate on a basic overlapping track the ball squirmed in after Vinnie had made a superb initial point blank save. 2-0 down with 25 to play we threw everything at United and only a minute later Steve latched onto a mix up and fired in a superb shot from the edge of the box for 2-1.

With United tiring and our football flowing we fully dominated proceedings. Sam then found Brenton on the far post who headed home the equaliser for 2-2. United were in complete shock and soon after Fisem bisected their defence with a great pass for Sam to round their keeper and give us a 3-2 lead.

We didn‟t stop there though attacking United and trying to kill them off. Fisem hit the post with a curling shot and Steve had a looping header go agonisingly close. With time running out we conceded an equaliser after a deflected cross fell to their striker who fired in for 3-3.

A draw in the end was a fair result as the match didn‟t really deserve a loser. What was pleasing about this day was the character shown by the team to stand up and fight until the end and do it by playing our way the team passing way. MOM- Vinnie Godwin

Chatham Cup Rnd 1: S Valley 7-0 (Blackburn 2 Aden 2 Hagarty Yates Gulley )

We welcomed Capital 5 team Stokes Valley to Hutt Park for our Round 1 Chatham Cup fix- ture. Alistair Yates and Finn Sorger made their 1st team debuts and Jack came in for Vinnie in goal. Our target was to be ruthless and professional in all areas today and our main goal was to not concede any goals.

The match was over as a contest after 20 minutes when took a 3-0 lead with Mike Sam and Fisem all netting. Further goals to Sam and Fisem saw us take a 5-0 lead at the break. We made changes at halftime and grabbed 2 more gaols with Steve and Alistair scoring to com- plete the scoring for a final score of 7-0.

Having good squad depth is key for any team challeng- ing for a title and today showed we have players with talent and the drive to be regulars in the 1st team. Hopefully we can have a 4 Open Mon-Thu 6am-8:30pm; Fri 6am-8pm; W/end 8:30am-2:30pm great Cup campaign in

I had been told a lot about Benburn Park and so had the team and we were all quite surprised when we turned up to see that it wasn't all as bad as we had been told it would be.

It was also great to see that the artificial cricket pitch had been replaced with actual artifi- cial grass for the winter. We kicked the game off looking like scoring several times for the first 20 minutes and Karori were really feeling the pressure.

30 minutes in and they snuck a lucky goal beating Palmer at the far post but from point blank range. We went off at half time all wondering what had gone wrong.

We had played 75 percent of the game in their half and had several shots at goal but could- n't seem to get any in.

All was looking well for the second half as we all felt better things were to come. We were wrong. After playing another 75 percent of the game in their half with just about all the pos- session we just couldn't manage to get one in the back of the net and the only time they looked like scoring in the second half Palmer miss judged it and it slipped off his gloves into the back of the net.

The last ten minutes we threw everything we had at them. After 10 corners, 5 shots on goal and several other golden opportunities the whistle went for our first loss of the season. 2 nil to Karori.

To be fair they were quite a good team but didn't deserve the win.

We weren't outclassed or out played and at the end of the day we just couldn't manage to bang the goals in like we usually do. Div 11 P W D L GF GA Pt Karori Meke 7 6 1 0 25 6 19

What extraordinary statistics the Women’s first team have created. After the completion of Round 1 of Capital Premier games the side has now gone unbeaten for over a year. Their last loss was on May 8th 2010. Even more amazing is that the side is unbeaten on Hutt Kelsey O’Connor Park since June 2009 -when the team were playing in Division 3!

Promotion occurred twice in 2009. Firstly, after the first round moving from Division 3 to Division 2 and then after the second round with promotion from Division 2 into Division 1.

And in 2010 after winning the Division 1 league plus a successful Cup campaign with victory in the 2010 Division 1 Final—it’s been a phenomenal period of success.. “Skipper” G.I.

The Last Word! Stop Out fan Michael Barton shares his views on football! On a recent Saturday (07/05/2011) the Dominion Post in a „slightly‟ sensationalist way decided to cover the problems of discipline in the Capital Football region.

With a casual glance you would be forgiven for thinking that the world was about to end. With a further read you can see that it was more about Capital Football having to use its stretched re- sources to sort out things that really should not be happening. Further, the article did not say whether discipline is better or worse than usual.

So what can we in the Wellington football family do about it? One thought that I have had is that at the lower levels the team members need to take responsibility for the mem- bers of their own teams. I was talking to a Wellington club official who was talking of a lower league player sent off three times last season.

My question was how the team and the club were managing this player as it seems that he has “issues”. So I have to ask why you would tolerate this in your team each week. Is it that team members are reluctant to act on one of their own? Or maybe a club doesn‟t have a strong enough management structure to handle internal discipline?

I would say do not be afraid to talk to your team mates about “stuff” that is impacting on your team and your game. It will save you, your club, and a lot of Capital Football people time and effort. “A gram of prevention is worth a kilogram of cure”.

Moving on, one thing that I have been doing is enjoying the physicality of the games I have been to this season. Football is clearly a contact sport, despite the thinking of the odd one or two on and off the pitch.

So I am going to say one of our back four, and to avoid anyone incurring a team fine he will stay anonymous, impresses me with his understanding of the physical nature of the game. He stood up to a very strong challenge in the match against Western Suburbs and my first thought was “that‟s a foul”. Our man picked himself up and got straight back into the game. He clearly felt no need to .respond and I enjoyed seeing him, immediately the final whistle went, shake hands with that very same opponent with a smile on his face.

A friend who has joined the women‟s game, for the first time in her life, at the age of forty tells me that it is surprisingly empowering to be involved in a physical challenge with another player. It may well be that the because of the relatively sedentary lifestyles of many of us we have forgotten that we are physical beings. Homes of Distinction Football is a contact sport and we would do well Registered Certified Builder to celebrate that. of new homes, alterations and additions. 13 Michael Barton 021 781 691
