he Jaguar Baseball Ring of Honor, dedicated April 28, T 2012, recognizes former head baseball coach Steve Kittrell and the proud heritage of South Alabama baseball, with plaques honoring former program head coaches as well as teams that have participated in NCAA Regionals and won Sun Belt Conference championships. Others recognized in the Ring of Honor include student-athletes who have gone on to play in the Major Leagues, All- Americans, Academic All-Americans and all-conference selections.

26 JAG MAGAZINE RETIRED NUMBERS

LUIS GONZALEZ 5

After induction into the USA Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999, following a three-year South Alabama career in which he played in all but one game, Luis Gonzalez (Tampa, Fla.) became the first Jaguar player in history to have his number retired by the program two years later. Gonzalez was a two-time All-American in 1986 and ‘88, and he holds the program record for RBI in a season with 80.

In his Major League Baseball career, Gonzalez became a five-time All-Star, finishing third in the MVP ballot after delivering a walk-off hit that earned the their first-ever World Series title in 2001. Gonzalez had his jersey retired by the Diamondbacks in 2010.

EDDIE STANKY 12 Head Coach (1969-79, 1981-83) 490-195-2 all-time record

Following a stellar Major League Baseball career, four-time All-Star (born in Philadelphia, Pa. on Sept. 3, 1915) became head coach of South Alabama baseball in 1969. Stanky steered the program, then only in its fifth-year, to ascendancy in the 70’s, leading the Jaguars to first-ever NCAA Regional appearances in ‘72, ‘73, ‘75 and ‘77. Two of Stanky’s teams rose to No. 1 in the nation in ‘72 and ‘75, the latter finishing with a 52-14 record, which stands as the school’s high win total.

After a heart operation in 1980, which saw Jim Crawford lead the Jags to a Sun Belt Conference title, Stanky returned to secure a pair more at the helm in ‘81 and ‘83. He is the second-winngest coach in South Alabama baseball history, and he was inducted into the USA Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989.

Steve Kittrell 3 Head Coach (1984-2011) Student-Athlete (1968-71) Former Jaguar head coach Steve Kittrell’s No. 3 was retired on May 7, 2016, at Stanky Field. Kittrell, the program’s all-time winningest coach, finished his career with over 1,050 wins at South Alabama. The Mobile, Ala., native led alma mater to 18 NCAA Tournament appearances, 14 Sun Belt Conference regular season and division titles, and eight league tournament championships. South Alabama teams finished with a winning record 25 times during his tenure, and won 40 or more games on 14 occasions while advancing to within one game of a College World Series appearance in six seasons. Kittrell — a 1971 South Alabama graduate with a degree in health, physical education and recreation — still holds the program record for four-year players with a career .368 batting average. He was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993.
