THE CITIZENS POST FROM THE BOARDROOM

Good Afternoon All and welcome to the Simplyhealth City Ground for today’s Evo-Stik League South Division One South fixture between Winchester City FC and Street FC. We would like to issue a warm welcome to the Players, Officials and Supporters that have made the journey from Somerset and we hope you enjoy your afternoon with us and have a safe journey home. So, the long unbeaten run finally came to an end at Bideford last weekend, but it certainly wasn’t for the want of trying. Unfortunately, the loss at Bideford was followed up by City exiting the Southampton Senior Cup at the hands of the AFC Stoneham, but the club had done incredibly well to make it to the semi-finals of the competition. We are delighted to welcome new sponsors, Wintax, on board and we look forward to announcing some new benefits with the partnership that supporters will also reap the rewards of. Thank-you to all that came down to spend the evening with the players on Thursday night at the football club, we are very lucky at this football club to have such a strong relationship between the players, management, committee and supporters – we really are all united in driving our football club forward. Enjoy the game today against a decent Street side who will certainly provide a stern test today. Please get behind the team! #youcitizens

THE CITIZENS POST DAVO’S DIARY

Good afternoon and a warm welcome to everyone for this afternoons’ big-league match against a very decent Street side. I wish their players, management and supporters a pleasant stay with us and a safe journey home. Street are having a very good debut season, they are managed very well by Richard Fey who is a top man, they are a well organised side and will be a really tough test for us today, it’s a test we look forward to though.

It’s been a strange time since my last notes with a fantastic win against Barnstaple 7-0 followed by an even better performance against Highworth in the midweek 4-1, we then travelled to an extremely direct Bideford side and we fell to a 1-0 loss in a fairly tight and poor game. In midweek we had the Southampton cup semi-final against Stoneham, we lost the game 4-3 in a game where we defended terribly scoring 2 OGs for a starters doesn’t help matters. It was just one of them games I think, i do not expect a repeat of it, this group have been nothing short of sensational since Boxing Day and I will not accept them getting criticised too heavily, believe me there are no harsher critics of this group than myself and the staff, we need to recharge and take stock of what we have done and then see if we can have one final hard push, starting today!

Player wise we have got a host of players carrying knocks and niggles, we will do our best to keep them on the pitch and pushing hard for each other! We are going to need the fantastic support to push them on, they have player a huge amount of games and given everything, let’s try and give them that added boost to push on that last little bit.

Enjoy today’s game!

Up the citizens!

Davo THE CITIZENS POST TODAY’S VISITORS – STREET FC CLUB HISTORY

Founded in 1880, Street Football Club is one of the oldest clubs in Somerset and was christened with the nickname “The Cobblers” due to a large shoe making history in the area. The club’s early years were fairly successful, winning the Somerset Senior League on four occasions before the end of the century, the first time being the 1882/83 season. The club also had early success in the Somerset Senior Cup as they lifted the trophy in 1898 and again 2 years later. After winning the Somerset Senior League again in 1909/10, and the Somerset Senior Cup the following year, the club made the decision to join the Western League. With the Western League being put on hold in 1914 due to WW1, Street re-joined the league at the start of season 1919/20 in division 2. Unfortunately, the division was disbanded three years later so the club rejoined the Somerset Senior League, where they remained for the next eight years before re-joining the Western League for the 1930/31 season. The first season back in division 2 was none too successful, finishing 16th out of 17, but two years later Street were runners-up to Swindon Town Reserves - a feat they repeated in 1938 when finishing 2nd behind Weymouth - but in those days there was no automatic promotion from division 2 into division 1. The following season the club had its finest hour by reaching the first-round proper of the FA Cup away at Football League 3rd division south Ipswich Town, but sadly lost 7-0. After WW2 Street returned to the Western League 1st division and in season 1947/48 had a memorable campaign ending 3rd in the league and reaching the FA Cup first round proper for the second time - after knocking out Yeovil Town 2-1 in front of a crowd of 5000 at the Victoria Field - where they were beaten 5-0 by Cheltenham Town. The 1952/53 season saw the club finish runners-up in division 1, losing out to Barnstaple Town who had a 0.01 better goal average after the sides had finished level on 44 points. The club then went through a lean spell and was relegated to division 2 in 1955 and then re-joined the Somerset Senior League in 1960 when the Western League division 2 was again disbanded. In the mid 1960’s the introduction of Tommy Wilson as manager saw the club’s fortunes rise again. At the same time, they left the Victoria Field and moved to the Turnpike Ground where they were crowned Somerset Senior League champions in 1964 - and again in 1966. In 1967 Street FC moved to their present home, the Tannery Ground, but times were lean and by 1992 they had dropped to division 3. The appointment of Noel O’Hare as manager in 1993 saw an upturn in fortunes and successive promotions came in his first 2 seasons. At the end of the 1994/95 season Noel left and Simon White was appointed. Simon left after only 11 games of the season, but the club went on to gain promotion again and reached the final of the League Cup under the guidance of Ken Randall. The following season Simon White returned and led the club to the Somerset Senior League championship title for a record 8th time - and back into the Western League after a 37-year absence. The following season floodlights and a seated stand were both erected and the changing rooms were enlarged. After guiding the club to 4th place and 3rd place finishes in the first two seasons, Simon again left the club mid-way through the 1999-2000 campaign. Neil Seymour and Julian Thresher took over the managerial reins, followed by Gerry Pearson and then Alan Hooker, until Simon White was again re-appointed at the start of the 2005/06 season and led the club to promotion to the Western League Premier Division at the first attempt. Dan Badman took over in 2011/12 and the following season the team finishing 6th; and went one better in 2013/14 finishing 5th. Season 2015/16 saw the team finish 7th in the league and reach the last four of the Somerset Premier Cup, but at the end of the season Dan stepped down due to work commitments. The committee moved swiftly and appointed ex-Bitton, Bridgwater Town and Paulton Rovers manager Richard Fey to take over and season 2016/17 saw his side challenging all the way for the title with Bristol Manor Farm. In the end, however, the club had to settle for the runners-up spot for only the second time in the club’s history.

The 2017/18 campaign was the Club’s 50th season in the Western League - and was a truly momentous one too! Early results were a little indifferent, but starting on 12th September 2017, Richard Fey’s charges completed a sensational run of 26 consecutive league victories that eventually saw the team win the title by fifteen points (falling just one point short of the century) after winning 32 out of their 38 games and scoring 100 goals, thus earning a place in the Southern League for the first time in the Club’s history. THE CITIZENS POST TODAY’S VISITORS – STREET FC PLAYER PROFILES

Tom Punchard (GK): Punchy is an experienced goalkeeper who has been with the club for over a decade. He’s vocal, commanding and, despite being well into his 30s, is still one of the best shot- stoppers in the area.

Liam Kingston (GK): An extremely promising young goalkeeper signed from Weston Super Mare at the end of November 2018. He played in the Southern League for Bridgwater Town during season 2016/17, but more recently he has donned the gloves at Cheddar and Shepton Mallet in the Western League.

Aidan Chainey (MF): Aidan played for the Cobblers a few seasons ago and since re-joining in the summer of 2017 from Gillingham

Town he has made a big impression at the Tannery. A quality midfielder with excellent tackling ability and superb vision.

Matt Hurley (MF): Matt is an extremely influential and athletic central midfielder with vision and distribution to match. Earlier in his career he had a short spell at former Southern League side Bridgwater Town.

2018 from Tiverton Town - he has also played for Taunton Town. Chips in with a goal or two as well.

Dave O’Hare (MF/FW): An attacking midfielder with several goals to his name in recent seasons. “Chin” re-joined Street from Paulton

Rovers towards the end of season 2015/16, but he has also played for Richard Fey when they were both with Bridgwater Town.

Harry Foster (FW): “Drink” scored goals for fun in the reserves during the 2016/17 season - and he chipped in with a double-figure

haul for the first team in 2017/18 as he became something of a ‘Super Sub’!

George King (FW): Signed for the club during January 2019 from divisional rivals Yate Town who he joined from Larkhall Athletic earlier in the season. A product of Weston Super Mare’s academy who has also played for Cribbs at Western League level.

Steve Murray (FW): The only way one can categorise ‘Scouse’ is

as a ‘Goal Machine’ who is a threat to any defence due to his lightning pace, superb control and slick finishing. He bagged 41 goals during the 2015/16 campaign - including finding the net in 15

consecutive games, and 66 during the following two seasons.

Phil Ormrod (FW): A proven goalscorer who returned to the club during the summer of 2018 following spells at Gillingham Town and

latterly Dorchester Town, where his stay was unfortunately plagued by injury. He’s now back ‘on song’ - so you’ve been warned!

In the Cobblers’ dugout

Richard Fey (Manager): ‘The Boss’ has accumulated a wealth of experience both on and off the pitch and has managed at both Southern League Premier and Division One levels before taking the reins here at Street FC during the summer of 2016… and the rest is history!

Nathan Rudge (Assistant Manager/DF): ‘Rudgey’ is an immensely strong and physically commanding centre back who, among others, spent 10 years at Tiverton Town. He was manager at Chippenham Town a few seasons ago where he taught his then assistant Rich Fey, absolutely nothing… allegedly…!!!

Anthony Cornish (Physio): Joined the Cobblers’ backroom staff in 2016 from Taunton Town, but he has also wielded the magic sponge at Tiverton Town, Bridgwater Town and Bishops Lydeard and he is one of the most respected physios in the south west.

Kevin Hurd (GK Coach): Former Street goalkeeper with well over 200 appearances at the Tannery, Kev returned during the summer of 2017 and joined the coaching staff after doing similar work for, among others, side Weston super Mare.

Graham Rudge (Kitman): Graham looks after the members of the squad like a ‘father’ - which of course he is to one of them - can you guess which one?

THE CITIZENS POST MALCOLM’S MUSINGS

We welcome Street to Winchester for today’s league match. Earlier in the season we won 2-0 at Street thanks to second half goals by Jake Rawkins and Brett Cunningham following a difficult journey in which we did not reach the ground until 2.35 pm. People may also recall the two clubs meeting in the F A Cup in 2016/17 with the game resulting in a 4-2 Winchester win with Joe Briggs, Ross Bottomley. Howard Neighbour and Craig Feeney scoring our goals, with Steve Murray who gave his side the lead, and Craig Herrod netting for Street.

Street are newly promoted from the Toolstation Western League last season having gone up as champions, after finishing runners up to Bristol Manor Farm the previous season. The 2016/17 seasons both saw the century of league goals reached, with an impressive record of 61 wins from 76 league games in these two seasons.

Street made a good start to life in this league winning their first two league games and scoring five league goals without conceding in the process. At the time of writing they were just below us in the table having won more league games than they have lost, but we are fully aware that this is a closely contested league in which anyone can beat anybody on the day and we are that they have already beaten Bideford three times this season and will no doubt be trying to avoid us completing the double against them..

Street are a club who had four spells as members of the Western League. However, their most recent spell began in 1997 when they earned promotion as a result of winning the Premier Division of the Somerset Senior League. They then spent nine seasons in division one of this league before being promoted to the Premier Division. Prior to their good performances of 2016/17 and 2017/18 which I have already described their highest position in this division was 5th, although last season was in fact the sixth time they had finished in the top seven in the Premier Division.

I also recall Street coming up against Eastleigh in the 1999/00 when Eastleigh visited there in a Preliminary round f A Cup tie. It is funny to think after what has happened since that this was only the 2nd time in 13 years that Eastleigh had not been eliminated from the competition at the first hurdle, and in those days, they usually entered the competition at the Preliminary Round stage. They however lost in the next round to Tuffley Rovers with a much- weakened team.

It is sad that we have to report the passing of club stalwart Keith Johnston and the Assistant Manager of Blackfield and Langley Chris Farrell has also passed away. We pass on our condolences to Keith’s and Chris’s families.

On the positive side local taxi firm Wintax have become a club sponsor and we wish them a long and happy association with Winchester football club. I in fact travelled to the Cirencester F A Cup match by getting a taxi from the Cart and Horses in Kings Worthy where we were holding our school reunion, and I also recall seeing someone I know from cricket driving their taxis. I would also like to thank the Winchester fans who travelled in their numbers for the midweek trip to Highworth and I am sure the players appreciate your support.

Street reached the 1st round proper of the F A Cup in both 1938/39 and 1947/48 losing to Ipswich and Cheltenham respectively. They also reached the 5th round proper of the F A Vase in 2006/07 losing to Wimborne.

THE CITIZENS POST MATCH REPORT – BY MALCOLM CLARKE BIDEFORD AFC 1-0 WCFC

I was not at today's game, but from the twitter feeds and the like have managed to put together the following.

Winchester suffered their first defeat of 2019, but remain in sixth place, three points below fifth place Evesham with two games in hand. This result means that they have only picked up one point in their last four games against Bideford who are in mid-table, but in a closely contested league are by no means out of the promotion race.

Winchester were without Rob Carr who was working which meant a start for Jake Rawkins as the only change to the starting line-up from Saturday. Graham Williams was also unavailable and Ollie Griggs also travelled but was not fit enough to be on the substitutes bench.

As was the case in the first bench between the team’s conditions did not make good football easy. Early on Sean Downing shoots just over, while at the other end Jamie Barron sets up Jake Rawkins whose effort is saved by home goalkeeper Joe Moore.

Ryan Pryce made a good save to deny Billy Tucker and Liam Gilbert shot just wide, but it was still goalless at the interval.

Downing who has been a thorn in Winchester's flesh in the past then has an effort blocked, while Josh Harfield headed just wide following a Jamie Barron free kick, while Ryan Pryce made a good save to keep out a Toby Down header at close range.

Both teams made substitutions with Tyrell Mitford and I K Hill coming on for Winchester, but although the visitors put some dangerous crosses into the box they came to nothing it was the home team that took the lead with 15 minutes to go with a superbly struck half volley from Ryan Turner.

After the goal Winchester tried hard to get back in the game with Jamie Barron having a shot blocked, Josh Harfield hitting the side netting and in added on time Tyrell Mitford hit the post. However, despite once again having good travelling support it was not to be and Winchester's unbeaten run came to an end.

THE CITIZENS POST MATCH REPORT – BY MALCOLM CLARKE WCFC 3-4 AFC STONEHAM

Winchester were beaten 4-3 by AFC Stoneham in the Southampton Senior Cup semi-final played at Hamble Club. This was a match I had considered going to until a hitch with the travel arrangements dictated that I did not attend.

Last season's Russell Cotes Cup finalists AFC Stoneham are3 developing a habit of giant killing and Winchester were the seventh club from a higher level that they have beaten this season and the third in the Southampton Senior Cup. These cup heroics include an F A Cup success against Westfield who currently occupy a playoff position in a league at the same level as Winchester.

The two teams would have met in this season's F A Cup had AFC Stoneham beaten Cirencester, but despite their F A Cup heroics it was further cup frustration who went out of three cup competitions at the first hurdle on penalty kicks and for the second time exited a competition after a game in which they held the league three times.

Winchester made two changes to the starting line-up from Saturday with Rob Carr returning and Tyrell Mitford starting. Jake Rawkins dropped to the bench and Liam Gilbert did not feature.

Winchester took the leads in the 20th minute when Joe Hayward set up Oli Bailey who followed up to score after the goalkeeper had saved his initial effort. Five minutes later Simba Mlambo hit the side netting, while Joe Cook headed over following a Jamie Barron corner. However former Winchester City striker Zach Glasspool levelled the scores with an effort from the edge of the box and although Simba Mlambo came close to restoring Winchester's lead it was 1-1 at the interval.

Jake Rawkins who had come on for Tyrell Mitford shot wide for Winchester and shortly afterwards player manager Craig is replaced captain Jamie Barron.

Winchester did however regain the lead eight minutes into the second half when Simba Mlambo headed home a cross from Jamie Barron. A minute later Ryan Pryce in the Winchester goal made a good save to keep AFC Stoneham out.

AFC Stoneham drew level with a second goal that Zach Glasspool will claim although many people will regard it as a Danny King own goal. Winchester however quickly restored their lead with Oli Bailey scoring following a one on one with the goalkeeper.

AFC Stoneham though showed their resilience by again drawing level this time through Sergio Caballero who scored shortly after coming on to replace Zach Glasspool.

Although Mlambo shot over for Winchester in the 3rd minute of added on time a set piece resulted in Ben Clarke heading home although the ball was deflected in by Joe Hayward. It was the first time AFC Stoneham had led all evening, but that will be of little consolation for Winchester who have now to concentrate on the league. while the never say die AFC Stoneham who will go second in their league if they win their games in hand have a cup final to look forward to.
