STOCKTON SURFEST EVENT TURNS SEVEN

The 2019 Orica Team Challenge will be held at North on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 February. Hosted by the Northside Boardriders, the Team Challenge will feature some of the best boardriding clubs in competing for $10,000 in prize money. Orica Kooragang Island’s General Manager, Bertus De Villiers, said: “We are delighted to again sponsor the Team Challenge at Stockton. This is our seventh year supporting the event, which continues to grow and evolve.” Surfest organiser Warren Smith said the Orica Team Challenge has developed into a major event on the Surfest calendar. “It’s great to see in this team format. There is a real sense of club pride and camaraderie amongst the teams.” “The hospitality of the Northside Boardriders is second to none and all the visiting clubs enjoy the welcoming vibe from the Stockton community.” If surfing’s not your thing, why not check out the Sacred Tree Markets on Saturday 23 February from 4pm to 8pm in Griffith Park, Stockton. The markets will feature street food trucks, a fire performance, live entertainment and a variety of stalls.

−− The first fertiliser-grade ammonium nitrate was produced on 24 February 1969 using imported ammonia. The Kooragang Island ammonia plant didn’t become operational until November 1969. −− The original feedstock used to make ammonia was naphtha but in 1982 the site switched to natural gas. Story has it the Newcastle gas pipeline was built using the ammonia plant’s gas contract as guarantee for its viability. Today, Orica KI uses between 10 and 15 per cent of the New South Wales natural gas supply. −− The site has had a complex history of ownership. It started out as Eastern Nitrogen Ltd, then shortly after became Consolidated Fertilisers Ltd (CFL). In 1989 CFL merged with neighbouring Greenleaf Fertilisers to form Incitec and Orica took ownership in 2003. −− There are approximately 8,000 pipes, more than 800 vessels and around 600 relief valves across the site. −− Our facility provides ammonium nitrate to approximately 85 per cent of the ’s mines. −− By using recycled water in our industrial processes, we are saving the Hunter region up to 2.9 billion litres of drinking water a year – that’s more than 1,100 Olympic-sized swimming pools. −− Since 2014 more than 1,000 high school students have visited the site to learn about ammonia manufacturing for the HSC Chemistry course. −− We are committed to making a lasting and positive contribution to the community and in FY18 invested $272,000 in sponsorships, grants and donations to help 45 beneficiaries.

TEA4TROG Recently we were very proud to sponsor Tea4TROG, a fundraising event for vital cancer research. TROG (Trans-Tasman Radiation Oncology Group) is a non-profit organisation that aims to continually improve outcomes and quality of life for all cancer patients who can utilise radiotherapy as part of their treatment. While TROG Cancer Research is based in Newcastle, it collaborates with hospitals and cancer centres all around the world. To date, the organisation has conducted more than 100 clinical trials.
