The painting was accepted for the Royal Academy in 1868 but was not exhibited, which brought storms of protest from the art world of the time. The model for the painting was probably Sandys' mistress, a gypsy named Keomi. The painting is reproduced here with the kind permission of the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Birmingham, England.
