Sheryl Mitchell, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, ACNP-BC SCNA President

New Year! Welcome to 2018. Welcome to our new board members and chapter officers. I would also like to thank our immediate past board members and chapter officers for their service and dedication. In preparation for this column, I reflected on the South Carolina Nurses Association (SCNA) in 2017. We began 2017 with a large amount of uncertainty surrounding health care. At the Federal level, we saw multiple attempts to repeal and replace the ACA. In addition to the attempts to repeal healthcare, we saw legislation on Capitol Hill regarding Nursing Workforce Development, Safe Staffing, and Home Health. In South Carolina, Sheryl Mitchell APRNs continued to seek Full Practice Authority.

As we begin 2018, there is still uncertainty surrounding healthcare. Nursing Workforce Development, Safe Staffing, and Home Health legislation still must move forward. APRNs in South Carolina will continue to seek legislation that will remove barriers and increase access to healthcare. We must continue to move forward and have critical conversations about nursing education, practice, research, policy, nursing workforce, lateral violence, diversity and inclusion, and protecting healthcare workers from acts of violence. SCNA is committed to moving nursing forward. However, we need you to do so. We will send out a call to members to participate on various committees and to represent SCNA at meetings. We will need content experts so that we may feature specialized topics in the South Carolina Nurse. We will need individuals interested in participating in policy and legislation. We need you to shape the future of nursing in South Carolina. As you read this issue, think about the future of nursing. What issues would you like to see addressed? Do you have an idea for us? We will be glad to discuss it with you. We look forward to hearing from you. Let’s move nursing onward and upward.

The many activities planned by the Convention Planning Committee, with special thanks to Angela Dykes, Kelly Bouthillet, and Rosie Robinson were fun and interesting for the attendees at this year’s meeting. The Monitors for the CNE sessions were given lists of things that they could do before each session, time had been built into the agenda for each of these activities. Options ranged from physical activities to Alice Wyatt and her famous joke telling abilities. Many also enjoyed walking on the beach and taking time to color pages from a Mandala coloring book.

Fun Stats • 23% of attendees participated • 2054 minutes of activities were reported • 5 entries for Coloring • 4 entries for Gym Workouts • 4 entries for Mindful Thinking • 6 entries for Relaxation Time • 1 entry for swimming • 4 entries for Trail Walking/Running • 19 entries for Walking/Running on the Beach

The winners of the Healthy Nurse contest for participating in the extra activities which featured using a QR code for recording each activity were: • Liana Smith • Mollie Carter • Alison Sallings • Matthew Thompson

We are planning to do similar activities next year since they were so well received. Congratulations to the winners of the Healthy Nurse/Healthy Nation contests at the SCNA Convention and Annual Meeting! Hurrah for all of you who participated… and won some prizes!
