COVER-Eastern Illinois University's new health and physical educa tion building, currently under construction, will be the home of the Panthers in the 1966-67 season. It will carry the name of the late Charles P. Lantz, EIU's athletic director from 1911 to 1952. The $3.6 million ath letic complex will be one of the finest such facilities in the nation.

EASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY BULLETIN 259 November, 1965 Published six times a year (January, April, July, Septem ber, October and November), by Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, Illinois. Entered as second class matter at the Post Office, Charleston, Ill. Effective date Sept. 1, 1961. ABOUT EASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY . . .

Eastern Illinois U n i v e r sit y, founded in 1895, has grown from the original one building on a 40- acre tract of land to the present 26 major buildings on a 266-acre campus. Eastern has consistently been ranked as one of the outstanding teacher training institutions in the nation. The university also provides curricula in the liberal arts and awards the B.S., B.A., and M.A. degrees. There are pre-professional programs. Dr. Quincy Doudna, Eastern's third president, has been EIU's Dr. Doudna administrative head since 1956. Eastern is located in Charles ton, county seat of Coles County and rich in Lincoln lore. Charleston has a population of 11 ,000 and is readily acces sible by air, rail and bus to metropolitan centers. EIU offers intercollegiate competition in 11 sports, and has a complete intramural program open to all students. Enrollment this year is a record-breaking 5,335. Among the students is the current Miss Illinois, Kathy Oros of Granite City. Miss Oros is a junior speech major. To meet the demands of increasing enrollment, Eastern has undertaken an extensive building program. A new men's physical education building, but a part of the program, is under construction and will be the home of Panther basket ball next season.

At Papillion his 1960 basketball team came within two games of the state tour nament, and his 1959 and 1960 baseball teams placed second in the state Class B tourna ment. Paap was also fresh man football coach at Papillion. He was a basketball squad member at Peru (Neb.) State Teachers College. Geurin was elected most val uable player and co-captain of the Panthers at the close of their championship season last winter. A four-year regular, he ended his collegiate career with 1,129 points to rank fourth in EIU's all time scoring derby. He scored 400 points last season and was cited by Coach Darling for his excellent basketball analytical sense. A native of Peoria, Geurin played for Coach Ty Franklin at Richwoods High School and was outstanding in both basket ball and baseball. He is a 22-year-old bachelor.

4 Rex V. Darling Head Basketball Coach EIU sports fans like to say that "Victory" is Coach Rex V. Darling's middle name. But his mother was a Latin teach er, and she was more subtle than that. The "V" stands for Virgil, but Rex-as any Latin student knows-stands for king. And king he was last year when his basketball and tennis teams won back-to back IIAC championships. Rex became ruler of the IIAC realm by imparting to his players the zest and imagination he brings to coaching .' His imagination wa.s never more in evidence than Yast winter when he took a squad that had not known a winning season and molded EIU'S first title bearer in 11 years. He did it by installing a highly disciplined offense he calls the "Split-T." It's not a football formation, but it is based on power and "quick openers." It closely resembles the Cincinnati shuffle, but has many innovations. The offense came as a surprise to EIU fans, who remem bered that Darling was interim coach in 1961-62· and em ployed a run-and-shoot attack. That was the season he bor rowed another football term and utilized the platoon system with a "bandit" team of ballhawking specialists. Darling is planning more surprises for this season in his closed-door workouts. "I can conceive that a coach might have to change his offense each year to fit the personnel," he says. But two things will remain the same: defensive pride and cohesive team spirit. The first is a result of demanding practice sessions, the second of the Darling zest. He ap pears at practice wearing a badge that says "We Try Hard er," the team motto. "I believe in hard work," he says, "but I also believe in having some fun-or it's not worth it. I'll add any innova tion to increase the entertainment of the fans and pleasure of the players. Color, excitement, fan support-it's all part of the total picture in spectator sports." Darling, a native of Roanoke, played basketball and tennis at Illinois State University, where he received his bachelor's . degree in 1939. His advanced degrees are from Indiana' University. He coached at Roxana prior to entering the Army 'in World War II. While in the service he advanced from private to captain and was an intelligence officer for the Rainbow Division in the European Theatre. Darling has been head tennis coach since coming to EIU in 1945 and is recognized as one of the nation's foremost authorities in that sport. He has been the National Associ ation of Intercollegiate Athletics tournament director for eight years, and is on the NAIA Olympic Representation Committee. He is also a member of the Joint USLTA AAHPER Committee for Improvement of Tennis Instruction in Colleges and Secondary Schools. Darling has a sizeable collection of jazz recordings and is also interested in art and literature. He 's active in golf, tennis and bowling. He and his wife, Kathryn, have a son, Rex. Jr., who is a senior at Louisiana State University. 3 RONALD PAAP Assistant Basketball Coach Ronald Paap begins his sec ond season as assistant bas ketball coach at Eastern Illi nois University. 4 DR. WALTERS. LOWELL Director, School of Health and Physical Education Guiding Eastern Illinois Uni versity's activities in health, physical education and athletics is Dr. Walter S. Lowell, associate professor in physical education. Dr. Lowell joined the staff in 1961 ...;::;;. and became director of the school in the 1964 reorganiza tion. Dr. Lowell has a varied back ground in coaching and physical education. He coached football. basketball and baseball for two years at Sebewaing, Mich., and seven years at Grand Haven. Mich. He also worked one year at a settlement house in Kalama zoo, Mich., and one year as a rec reation worker at a reform school in Lansing, Mich. He was backfield coach for EIU football before assuming duties as the school's chairman. A veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict, Dr. Lowell is a commander in the Naval Reserve with nearly 23 years experience. Dr. Lowell and his wife. Margaret, have five children. Two are now attending EIU. Dr . Lowell graduated in 1948 from Western Michigan University, received his M.A from the University of Michigan in 1953 and his doctor's degree from Michigan State University in 1962.

TOM KATSIMPALIS Director of Athletics Tom Katsimpalis, one of East ern Illinois' all-time basketball greats, is serving his second year as director of athletics. Katsimpalis came to Eastern from Gary, Ind., and played four seasons on Panther squads that had a combined won-lost record of 87-17 and advanced to the na tional tournament three times. He is one of three EIU athletic figures to be inducted into the Helms Foundation Hall of Fame. (The others are cross country and track coach Maynard O'Brien. and the late Charles P. Lantz. EIU athletic director for 42 years.) Before graduating in 1952, "Tom Kat" set Eastern game. season and career scoring records (since broken) and earned AII-IIAC and All-America recognition. After graduation, Katsimpalis coached at Altamont and Clinton high schools. He returned to Eastern in 1959 to be come assistant to the athletic director. He became director in 1964. Katsimpalis married Eastern's 1951 Homecoming queen. the former Marilyn Jeanette "Sug" Morford. They have two boys, ages 13 and 10. PANTHER PREVIEW Only one starter returns from Eastern Illinois' first championship basketball team in 11 years, but the Panthers face the coming campaign undaunted. "This is definitely not a rebuilding year," says Coach Rex V. Darling, the eternal optimist. "We have a young squad," he admits, "but it is eager to meet the toughest schedule we've had in the 20 years I've been here." Only two seniors are on the roster. They are Larry Miller (6-4, 11.8 ppg), the only returning regular, and utility man Elston Mitchell (5-9). Miller, a high percentage shooter, is expected to be better than ever after a year in the back court. and Mitchell will be a key player with his long-range sniping and fiery hustle. Three remaining lettermen-all juniors-show promise. Brawny Don Templeman (6-3) and quick-moving Bill Ander son (6-2) logged almost as much time as the starters last season and are capable. So is Richard Barni (6-3), a strong defensive player and fine shooter. The best of the newcomers appear to be Denny Hoffmeis ter (6-5), Dick Broderick (6-5) and Dave Pavelonis (6-1). Hoffmeister, a transfer from Northwest Missouri, saw var sity action late last season and displayed fine potential. Broderick, a muscular ex-Marine, is in only his second sea son of basketball but is progressing rapidly. Pavelonis comes to EIU from Harrisburg Junior College, where he averaged 29 points per game to lead the state's JUCO scorers. Those are the players most likely to fill the shoes emptied by graduation of three four-year regulars and a Little All America. Jim Ficek, co-MVP selection in the conference, won the national honor with a blistering .632 per centage. Other graduates-all quality athletes-were co captain and MVP Bill Geurin, co-captain Val Bush, and re bounding ace Bob Rickett. Bush and Ficek were all-confer ence choices. A look at the records shows the ability of last year's squad. Fully 11 school records were set, and Geurin and Rickett rank among the top six all-time EIU scorers. In all, the Panthers posted a season record of 18-7 and went 7-1 in the conference. Darling expects the current crop of Panthers to claw a niche in the record book. "This will be a more aggressive team on defense, even though last year's club was capable," he says. "I thoroughly expect people to emerge of the star nature such as we had last year. The only time this team will quit is when the horn sounds to end the ball game." 1964-65 SCOREBOARD EIU Opp. EIU Opp. WaiJJsh 92 60 •Illinois State 86 67 UW-Milwaukee 66 67 Washington (Mo.) 80 70 *Illinois State 85 55 *Central Mich. 80 73 *Central Mich. 64 79 Indiana State 76 81 Millikin 86 66 *Western Ill. 77 76 Anderson 86 70 Guiney 97 91 z-Minn.-Duluth 69 63 Lewis 74 84 z-Lo Crosse 60 65 Greenvi lie 97 74 Ouincy 80 65 *Northern Ill. 74 71 Washington (Mo.) 61 62 Z·Z·III. 6 IIAC PICKS FOR '66 Central Michigan ranks as the pre-season favorite on paper, but on the court-where the games are played-it should be another tight race in the Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Eastern Illinois lost four starters from its first title squad since the glory days of the early fifties, but the Panthers' well of material is far from dry. They expect to be in the thick of the race. Northern Illinois and Western Illinois are prime contend ers despite serious squad losses. The only real longshot is Illinois State, but promising recruits from last year's frosh team buoy Redbird hopes of climbing in the standings. Optimism is the word at Central Michigan, where Coach Ted Kjolhede has 12 lettermen back from the winningest squad in Chippewa history (19-7). Five of those vets started at various times last season, and Don Edwards (6-1) and Tom Pelkey (6-2) are two of the league's finest. Northern suffered a blow when aii-IIAC pivotman John Moore was declared ineligible, but Coach Ev Cochrane still has both starting guards, six other lettermen, and an abun dant yield from a fine freshman team. Western boasts one of the league's top players in kan garoo-legged Mel Lacey. Coach Stix Morley suffered his first losing season in 17 years as boss of the Leathernecks last year, and it's not likely to happen again. Illinois State faces a hard climb with only two regulars back from a last-place squad. Coach Jim Collie lost his two top scorers and must count on help from sophomores and the development of 6-7 pivot Duane Bruninga. Eastern's hopes hinge on continued progress by last sea son's talented reserve corps. Larry Miller (6-4) is the only returning regular. "This shapes up as a perennial IIAC dogfight with Cen tral Michigan having the most experienced players back and looming as the team to beat," says EIU coach Rex V. Darling. "But we are the defending champs and will not be counted out until the last ball game."

17 GYMNASTICS Head Coach Robert W. Hussey Bob Hussey returns to EIU aft· er a year~ leave of absence for graduate study and resumes duties as coach of gymnastics. The energetic Hussey came to Eastern in 1958 and quickly moved the Panthers to a con tending position in the IIAC. In his last three years at the helm, EIU placed second in the con ference. His 1963-64 team also finished third in the NCAA col lege division meet. Hussey competed in baseball and gymnastics at La Crosse (Wis.) State University, where he graduated in 1949. He coached football , basketball and track at Manistique, Mich., High School from 1949 to 1952, and coached football and track at Wash ington Junior High, Racine, Wis., from 1952-1958. He is married and has seven children. Hi s master's degree is from Michigan State University, and during the past year he completed course work toward an Ed.D. at Colorado State College. Richard Vaughan (EIU '59) is assistant gymnastics coach. Vaughan , Eastern's backfield coach in football , is new to the staff this year. The past three years he was head football coach at Tinley Park. His master's degree is from EIU . Vaughan is married and has one child.

GYMNASTICS PREVIEW Eastern's gymnastics program is going through a )lOUth movement this season. The squad has only one senior Roger Jebe, a consistent performed on the high and parallel bars. Help should come from two strong recruits from last year's non-varsity club-all-around performers Bob Mellema and Ed Cheatham. Top returnees are Bob Sabey on the side horse and John Kruse on the rings. Both are juniors. Terry Dieckhoff, Paris junior, adds strength in the rings, side horse and parallel bars. The major loss from last season was Captain Vic Avigli ano, a strong four-year pointgetter in all-around. He placed fourth in the national tournament last winter to lead EIU to seventh in team competition. National champion Western Illinois rules as the IIAC favorite again.

SWIMMING PREVIEW The Panthers don't have enough depth to make a big splash in IIAC swimming this season, but they expect to be much improved from last winter. Co-captains Glenn Anderson and Greg Dennis head a fine corps of freestyle swimmers that includes top sophomore prospect John Wilkin. Coach Wheeler also expects strong performances from Dave McJunkin in the individual medley and Steve Witmer in the butterfly. Sophomore Jim Whitener will help in diving. But with only 12 swimmers on the varsity roster, the Panthers may have trouble scoring heavily despite top In dividual performances. Wheeler may convert some ot his freestylers to the butterfly and breast stroke to back up these events. Although his squad is thin, Wheeler expects EIU to move out of the IIAC cellar this season. "I do not forsee us on the bottom of the pile this year," he says. "The desire to win is there and this is going to carry us a long way."

21 WRESTLING Head Coach Harold 0. (Hop) Pinther Eastern illinois' wrestling for· tunes have been on the upswing ever since Harold 0. (Hop) Pin ther took command in 1954. In his 10 years as head coach, the Panthers have compiled a 67-37-3 dual record and produced two na tional individual champ:ons. EIU has gone through five of the past six seasons with only two dual-meet defeats, and have been consistent challengers for the IIAC title the past five years. Ironically, "Hop" was on leave of absence during the title season of 1962-63, but there have been three second-place finishes and one third in the five-year span. Last season EIU finished a slim one point behind the winner. Pinther received a B.S. degree from Central State (Wis.) and an M.S. from the University of Wisconsin. He has done further graduate work at Colorado State, Greeley. During the spring, "Hop" coaches the golf squad. He is married and has three children.

22 WRESTLING PREVIEW Prospects appear rosy for an other fine wrestling season at EIU, although the Panthers faced a beefed up schedule that in cludes NCAA champion Iowa State and a pair of Big Ten toughies. "It's the best schedule we've ever had," says Coach Harold 0. (Hop) Pinther, "and possibly the best team we've ever had. We sho~.ld compile a pretty good rec ord. The Panthers lost three key men from a squad that finished one point shy of a conference championship. They were NAIA champion Don Neece at 191, and Jim Semetis IIAC champs Ron Semetis at 147 and Bill MaJquardt at 115. But six lettermen are back, including 160-pounder Jim Semetis, the third in the line of Semetis brothers to cap tain the Panthers and win an IIAC title. Other positions are filled with outstanding sophomore recruits. The only ser ious weakness is a lack of backup men should injuries or ineligibility cut into the squad.

24 CUBS' CAGE OUTLOOK By all yardsticks, the Panther Cubs measure up as the best collection of basketball talent ever to grace an East ern Illinois non-varsity roster. "It's the finest freshman squad in depth, ability and size that I can recall in my tenure at Eastern,"' says varsity coach Rex V. Darling, a 21-year vet. "We have always had standouts, but never an overall squad with the depth of this one." Darling has recruited one all-stater, numerous all-confer ence athletes, and the most height of any previous EIU team-varsity or non-varsity. The squad is coached by Bill Geurin, most valuable play er on last year's IIAC championship squad. The former Peorian entered EIU when freshmen could play varsity com petition and set some sort of record by starting 97 varsity games in a four-year career. All-state credentials are carried by another Peorian, 6-2 Jim LeMaster of Central High. All-conference honors were won by Dennis Best, Ron Rami, Pat Ryan, Carl Schroeder, John Vetter, Bob Warnsley and Douglas Zick. With several less highly touted but perhaps equally tal ented individuals to choose from, Geurin may adopt a pla toon system to best develop the future Panther stars.
