CAST OF CHARACTERS

Owen Barfield: A long time member of the Inklings and close friend of C. S. Lewis. He was a poet, philosopher and author. Though not a Christian, Lewis had very high regard for his character as well as his intellect. Two of the Chronicles are Narnia, The Lion the With and the Wardrobe and Voyage of the Dawn Treader, are dedicated to two of Barfield’s children, Lucy and Geoffrey.

Douglas H. Gresham: The son of who has an inside look the private side of CSL and his marriage to Joy Davidman. 2

C. S. Lewis: Prominent twentieth century writer in the fields of Christian thought, Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Literary Criticism. Prominent member of the Inklings. Author of numerous books. We will often refer to him as CSL.

Warren Lewis: One of the founding members of the Inklings. Brother and best friend of C. S. Lewis, who called him Warnie. Specialist in 17th century France. Author / editor of 10 books.

Dorothy Sayers: Best known as an English mystery writer, she also wrote Christian books and essays. She was a friend and correspondent of CSL but some are mistaken when they call her an Inkling.

Bryan Shelley: A student at Oxford in the 1980s. He helped found the C. S. Lewis Society of Oxford and was an occasional speaker at meetings. He finished Oxford with a D. Phil. specializing in English romantic literature.

Christopher Tolkien: Son of J. R. R. Tolkien and member of the Inklings. When it came to writing, his father was a perfectionist and thus left considerable unfinished work. Christopher Tolkien has ably edited these works and made them available to Tolkien fans.

J. R. R. Tolkien: Close friend of CSL and long time member of the Inklings. His work, The Lord of the Rings is the second best selling work of fiction in history. He was a professor at Oxford University and he has received international recognition for his linguistic expertise.

Mary Van Deusen: An American lady with whom C. S. Lewis corresponded from August, 1949 until his death in 1963. The Collected Letters of C. S. Lewis (2007) contains 82 letters to her. Those letters mention that also corresponded with her.

Charles Williams: He was an Inkling for six years during which C. S. Lewis grew quite close to him. Though he lacked a college degree, he became an important editor at Oxford University Press. He was a literary novelist who also wrote in other areas. BY C. S. LEWIS

5. LEWIS, C. S. Chronicles of Narnia. London: Folio Society, 2002. Seventh Printing. Each of the seven volumes is bound in green cloth with gilt decoration and lettering on the front cover and spine. The slip case is in gold foil with map of Narnia paste downs on both sides. The Folio Society makes beautiful books and this set is marvelous. The slip case and all books are in fine, unread condition. $200

Jacket condition is G. This book, dedicated to J. R. R. Tolkien, was one of those that thrust Lewis into the limelight in the mid twentieth century. This copy belonged to Eleanore M. Jewett whose bookplate is present. She was the author of a children’s book set in medieval times. $750

There is a small bookseller label. Lacking dust jacket. This is the book criticized harshly by CSL in Abolition of Man. Lewis changes the names to protect the guilty. He calls it the Green Book by Gaius and Titius. CSL refers to a discussion of Coleridge at a waterfall. That part starts on page 17 of this book which has 274 pages. This book was used in many schools and copies that are not ex-library are hard to find. $225

Many consider this to be Williams’ best novel. This copy was owned Anne Renwick and dated by her, 1940. The Bodleian Library at Oxford contains a collection of poems and letters written by Williams to Renwick. Williams encouraged Renwick to write a book about the kinship of his own work with the prophetic works of William Blake. The book contains the bookseller label of Blackwell’s in Oxford. $75
