Since its founding, the Graduate School has been an accredited institution of higher learning in Israel. It later received The an absolute charter granted by the Board of Regents of the State of New York. The instructors and advisors of the Graduate School are members of the scientific staff of the Weizmann Institute of Science. Currently, there are over Feinberg 1,100 students, with a student-teacher ratio of 4:1, enabling considerable individual attention. The official language of instruction is English. This enables foreign students to participate fully in all of the Graduate School’s programs. The only criteria for acceptance to the School are academic excellence and scientific integrity. Admission to all programs, Graduate privileges, and activities is granted without regard to race, gender, color, nationality, and origin. All students are directly involved in the research conducted at the Institute, and receive scholarships that allow them to devote all their energies School to research and study. There are no tuition fees. The Graduate School consists of five Research Schools: the Solo Dwek and Maurizio Dwek Research School of Chemical Science, the Ekard Research School of Biological Science, the Lorry I. Lokey Research School of Biochemical Science, the Moross Research School of Mathematics and Computer Science and the André Deloro Research School of Physical Science.

These schools provide an extra boost to the students’ immersion into scientific research, supporting them in their becoming mature scientists. The Research Schools’ benefits for students include a wide range of opportunities for personal development, such as scientific travel grants to facilitate expanded contacts with the international research community, and greater exposure to world leaders in their fields. Dear Graduates,

One hundred years ago, Albert Einstein formulated his general theory of relativity, generalizing special relativity and Newton’s law of universal gravitation and providing a unified description of gravity as a geometric property of space- time. The theory’s applied implications run wide and deep; for example, the analysis of relativistic effects on time measurement is an important practical engineering concern in the operation of global positioning systems—many other instruments, from electron microscopes to particle accelerators, would simply not work if relativistic considerations were omitted.

This towering achievement of 20th-century physics exemplifies the extraordinary importance of basic research; of Prof. Daniel Zajfman exploring aspects of our world that appear to have no discernible application to daily life. It is precisely such work President that often paves the way for others with a more practical bent. At the Weizmann Institute of Science, this is a supreme Weizmann Institute of Science value: We let curiosity lead the way to discovery through rigorous investigations, and believe this is the best approach to advancing the human condition. I hope that wherever you go in the future, this value of free questioning and open- mindedly pursuing an answer to that which intrigues you will be your guide.

It gives me great pleasure to congratulate you, the Weizmann Institute’s new graduates, your families, and your faculty advisors and mentors, on your academic achievements. You have accomplished a great deal to reach this graduation day. Your new degrees attest to your devotion to science, intense curiosity, and great perseverance.

You have brought a wealth of opinions, approaches, talents, and personal quests to our research community. Coming from different countries, you have enriched your research teams and colleagues, challenged yourselves and your advisors, and have collectively pushed the frontiers of human knowledge further. I sincerely hope that you have enjoyed the process and can now look back with satisfaction at your contribution to your peers, to the Weizmann Institute of Science, and to science as a whole. I know that many of you are already continuing toward another degree or postdoctoral training, and wish you every success. I am confident that you will make your mark in the global scientific arena, in advanced technology industries, science education, or any other field of your choosing.

Today I also wish to express my deep appreciation to the Feinberg Graduate School’s alumni and faithful supporters, whose friendship has played an important role in the School’s development.

We take pride in your achievements and wish you much success in the next stages of your careers. Although your years of study at the Weizmann Institute are ending, we want you to stay connected with the Institute as active alumni, and we hope to see you here on campus often.

Dear Graduates and Guests,

It is a privilege to congratulate you, the newest graduates of the Weizmann Institute—those of you who are receiving their doctorates and heading for new lives as independent researchers, and those who are receiving their Master’s degrees and continuing with their scientific training.

Each year, this is an exciting occasion—just like it was the first time. This excitement originates in our great joy and satisfaction with your accomplishments in basic science, as well as from our curiosity and expectation as we watch you take on leadership roles in the disciplines of science and technology, education, and social practice.

We live in an age of rapidly and, at times unexpectedly, changing political, economic, and social reality in Israel and Prof. Irit Sagi around the world. Departing the scientific ‘greenhouse’ and realizing your potential these days is a professional and Dean Feinberg Graduate School social challenge. Yet it is a worthy one, which we should embrace. Scientist and philosopher Yeshayahu Leibowitz said Weizmann Institute of Science “Science is the one and only thing I know to be a universal human asset”.

You are stepping into a complex reality, wielding tools that will enable you to promote this universal asset. You absorbed knowledge, vision, and confidence in your abilities. Beyond the degree itself, your studies of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology have provided you with a set of skills, such as creative thinking, perseverance, and the ability to cope with complicated problems. One of the most important things you have learned here is to ask important, groundbreaking questions. This ability is founded upon deep and extensive knowledge, imagination, courage—and confidence. All these will, no doubt, bear fruits in the future.

Special thanks go to the family of each and every one of you, for nurturing and encouraging you to strive for excellence, and for the support they have given you from an early age and throughout the years. I also wish to thank my colleagues for their many hours of teaching, tutoring, guiding, and training you to be promising scientists.

Dear graduates, on your first day of studies here, we welcomed you into the Weizmann Institute family. And now, as you prepare to move on to your next destination, keep in mind that we will always see you as part of this family. As a family often does, we will continue to follow your progress with advice and support that emanates from a sense of responsibility and partnership. Dear Graduates and Parents,

Every year I am deeply moved when I witness the graduates come up on stage in their gowns, as if they were my own children. And my children are here—those I have mentored throughout their master’s and doctoral degrees; those I have watched grow in the past few years. Each farewell is a difficult one for us, your teachers and advisors, but also a source of immense pride. The bond that we have established between us is one-of-a-kind. Together, we experienced both frustrations and joys; breakthroughs and failures. Nothing is more exciting than to make a new scientific discovery together, to realize that together, we have reached a new, Prof. Michal Irani previously unknown place. It is a unique experience imprinted in memory. The Chair advisor-student bond is no fleeting connection; it is a bond for life. Scientific Council Weizmann Institute of Science To this day, I proudly keep track of the successes of my former students. And to this day, I still consult with my former advisor.

I hope we have given you useful tools for the road ahead; that we have provided you with fishing rods and not fish. That we have taught you that the most important thing is to ask the right questions, and to never give up until you succeed. That without belief in one’s goal, it is impossible to succeed—in research or in anything of substance in life—because the road ahead is a rocky one.

We watch you with pride, and look forward to your successes. Some of you will return, as scientists and colleagues, and will most likely even take our place on this podium. Nothing would make us prouder.

I wish you the best of luck.
